Title: Broket Deer Hunting in the Yucatan Peninsula
Post by: Gerardo on March 12, 2014, 11:09:00 AM
A friend of mine and myself are practicing for a challenging hunt in the Mexican Yucatan peninsula

We are hoping to have a chance for a shot at the misterious and ellusive Broket Deer which in Mexico is called Temazate

Has anyone hunted one with a bow ? Are there any pics out there ?

Thanks

Never hunted them but found some pictures on line. Just search Brocket deer pictures

I went on a fishing trip there and saw some game. Brought this back  as souvenir along with a month long virus. These are big Brocket buck antlers. They vary from brow to gray, a more distinct variance than whitetails.    (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_2025-1.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_2025-1.jpg.html)  Neat country with a chance of seeing my dream beast to hunt, a jaguar. Have a great adventure.

One of my favorite books is Jungle Hunter by Joe Cavanaugh and  his hunts in Central and South America.  Joe is just a regular guy hunting with locals. They  gun hunt both red and grey broket along with a bunch of other critters. I'd think bowhunting would be a real feat but they do get buckshot close to a lot of animals so if you get shotgun close, bow close isn't that much farther away.

That looks to be a very neat trip.

I hope you will share your hunt when you return as I know nothing of these critters.

They kind of remind me of the Sika deer.

My wife has one of these in the freezer to mount for a customer. Cool little creatures for sure!

This one is gray/brown...broken off spike. The customer killed it while there hunting for oscillated turkeys. I'm not sure of the method this one was taken but I was proud to see something I've never saw before.

Good luck on your hunt. Aim SMALL really comes into play here.

"Rachel". Here is my customers deer. This is near trophy quality if it wasn't broken off.  The grey brown brockett subspecies.  He brought the hide and horns in a lunchbox.  Lol.  I look forward to getting it mounted up.  This shows the size of these little guys.  Very cool animal!  Good luck on your hunt!

I wonder why I never heard of them before and they are not one of the Super Slam species?

Unique animal.   And thanks for the trophy picture.  I had no idea they were that small from the other pictures shared.

Very cool.  Good luck and looking forward to the story.

Hope to do this hunt, maybe try to combine it with white-lipped peccary. Can't wait to hear  the details! Good luck!

To answer your Slam question It-m-grow, it's the "North American Super Slam" and Brokets are Central and South American critters.  Jaguar is a replacement animal on the list though but they can creep into the US SW at times.  There's Pampas, Marsh and whitetail deer, taper, cougar, peccary and all kinds of hunting possibilities for anyone with adventure in their soul.

So we leave in 15 days and we have are setups ready to go

We decided to use the weekend to do some real life practice

So my friend Roberto who is my hunting buddy for the trip got our local taxidermist to make a duiker mold which is very similar in size

We got it and placed a ladder to the window so we could practice

There are no big trees so a tree blind is out of the question

They are very ingenious do to put a hammock between two trees

I think I will bring my bush n bag from bigjim

Here is a pic that was sent from the outfitter in Campeche

I will be hunting with a 54" td treadway black swamp longbow and fmj arrows a vpa broadhead or some woodsman havent figured what broadhead still

We are so excited for this hunt and I am happy to share it with Gerardo.

I remember when I spoke with the Arturo, our outfitter, he said that it will be an "interesting" challenge with our longbows.

Hey, aren't we all looking for a challenge!

In Honduras the locals hunt them during dry weather when they come to water holes or creeks, They will hide in brush and shoot them with shot guns. A little restaurant out in Olancho state has some skull plates with varying sizes of antlers. I think they would be fun to hunt with with my bow.

Not to hijack the thread, but I would disagree...check the map  http://www.superslam.org/
