Looking for a new Hybird longbow. Seen a article not too long ago on a Bowyer in Southern California, who was making a Longbow highly Reflex/Deflex very fast. Can not recall his name but I want one.
In your Opioion what is the faster Hybird longbow you have shot. Getting shoulder surgery and neeed to come down in poundage from 58 at 27 to probaby 47@27, but want to retain speed and sighting ability.
Can anyone help me out.
A&H, Centaur, Whippenstick, Bigfoot, etc.
I understand your question and acknowledge your desire to drop weight, yet maintain performance, however, with the upper echelon of bowyers today I honestly doubt that the few fps difference between any of the top bows would be discernible to anything other than a chronograph.
I think it would be easier to pick a bow, then ask for specific advice on that bow vs. the myriad of answers you're about to receive.
The fastest r/d longbow I have shot would have to be a Black Widow PL that shot about 10 years ago. I don't know if it's the fastest out there though.
I was forced to drop a lot of poundage all so .After trying a number of second hand bows , I decided on an A&H . The Zipper was right up there all so . I am sure there are more , but I found the A&H to have the mixture of what I wanted . Speed, good workmanship ,and ease of shooting .
Caribow makes some great hybrids. Fast, stable, quiet. All the good stuff. Fastest? Who knows, but definitely in the mix.
I have had my K-2 from Hill Country for about a month now. It looks to be as fast as my recurve to the naked eye. It is smooth and I dropped down about 5lbs. But if you have never seen one of Roman's bows, this thing is beautiful!
I always read a lot about Bigfoot bows being very performance oriented.
Blackie Schwartz has a website with published results
I've owned and shot a bunch of different ones, and the fastest one I've shot was a Bigfoot Sasquatch 3pcs. hybrid with triple carbon and foam limbs.
MOAB by Thunderstick Archery.
In a 1pc or 2pc: CENTAUR!! Truly bonkers for a longbow. Another equally super choice for a 1pc or 3pc: Stewart Slammer. Leon's bows are BORN to hunt. Eerily quiet! Those two are my all time favs. Still other wonderful alternates: Zipper, Morrison, or if you want ACS, my preference is for Dryad's version, don't care for the A&H all that much. Toelke Whips are absolutely super duper as well, though maybe not 'quite' as blazing as some of the others I mentioned, but still one of my all time favs.
I have not shot a Caribow or Bigfoot yet, so can't offer an opinion on those two.
Fastest I've shot has been a Thunderstick MOAB.
Javamans inferno is no joke! Noticeably quicker than a bunch of hybrids I own or have owned in the same poundage verified on a scale. Never chronographed any kind a bow though.
And of course a centaur is hard to beat also.. Two of my favorite speedsters...
I found the ACS to be the fastest
All I can say is don't listen to Larry. He's only tried a few hundred bows.
Charlie I'm just glad my wife doesn't get on here :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
ACS and Javaman's
I shot a 42# ACS that a would put up against some 50# bows in speed and cast
Quotewant to retain speed and sighting ability.
Easiest way to do that is drop down accordingly with arrow weight. If you have been shooting 10 gpp with the old draw weight, do the same with the new.
I don't have as much experience with different bows as most of these guys but the TimberGhost is a pretty fast hybrid.
Hill country harvest master
over 10 gr/# at 196fps
I would put it against any other bow in a race, but as we all know we, I, can't miss them fast enough to kill them.
Legends cyclone is a shooter and they are the best people you will ever deal with.
ACSs for me, too, but don't take my/our word for it, check out Blackie's bow reports. ACS is the fastest extreme r/d longbow he's tested.
A&Hs are very fast.
BUT
They are also very quiet smooth shooting bows. I don't feel that the ACS limb gives up other desireable shooting qualities to get speed, except for maybe some durability by using the carbon limb.
They are top performers all the way around in my opinion.
Did not mean to insinuate that I was in any way affiliated with Horne Archery. This info came from their website. I should have stated that. My error. Thanks Joe vt for bringing this to my attention.
Horne Archery

Our bows are quietly efficient, soft in the hand, and did we mention FAST! We offer you what may be the most well rounded bows on the market, boasting speeds of over 210 fps AMO, while still maintaining shock free shooting comfort.
Holm Made Osprey
I don't have a chrono but this thing is a performer
we just chronographed my hill country longbow and it is 47 at 28 regularly shooting over 200 feet per second through the chrono three fingers under with the 360 Grain Arrow. pictures of it are on the hill country heaven thread posted tonight
I have never shot any of Kirk's bows but would have to say to give them a try ( bigfoot bows ) based on the discussions I have had with him on here and the praise they receive here on Tradgang as well. Steve with Eaglewing makes a really fast smooth hybrid as well. Other great choices are A&H ACS CX, Centuars with carbon limbs, Zippers, and my personal favorite Widows. The Black Widows aren't quite up there in speed with some of these other bows I have mentioned which will shoot 200 fps with a 9 gpp. It shoots about 190 fps at 9gpp which is plenty fast for me and it doesn't have some of the more really extreme curves like some of the other bows have which for me makes it easier to string and unstring. Plus it is a very forgiving bow and the guys at Black Widow are all top notch guys.

At 7.5 gpp I would think many bows would do the same, no?
A&H ACS without a doubt, and I just happen to have one for sale right now in the Classifieds :saywhat: :goldtooth:
I'm getting 190fps at 9.2gpp with my dryad ACS CG limbs. It might not be as fast as the A&H but in my experience it is much much more enjoyable to shoot! Your results may vary!
The fastest for me have been A&H acs , Caribow wolverine and a Zipper Nitro .
Caribow Peregrine for sure. It also had an incredible smooth draw, so you can easily go a few pounds higher
Bigfoot Sasquatch,very fast and quiet.
St. Joe hands down for me. And smooth.
I would vote for the Centaur, bamboo/carbon limbs. My PL is fast, Shawnee and Big Jim Buffalo also fast, all with carbon in the limbs. Centaur is still the winner in my"stable" of bows. That being said, speed isn't everything, cast is equally important. How the bow handles a heavier arrow will be key if you are dropping weight in a hunting bow. I don't think you will be unhappy with any of the bows mentioned.
I have owned Centaurs and currently own a couple ACS bows, they are fast. I can't believe no one has mentioned the Toelke Whip.
For me personally I find the ACS a bit touchy on release,(probably my bad form),the whip is much more user friendly for me and doesn't give up enough in speed to make a difference it shoots right with my recurves of the same poundage.
JMHO......YMMV......Pat
For comfort and quickness I love my St. Joe River bow 50@28" and shoots much faster than that
Are you confused yet ? Lol....lots of options out there !
My vote goes to Centaur, but I've not shot that many !
The Cyclone made by legends bows is my choice smooth and fast .
Don't overlook stikbows by Rich Emery. I've never chronoed mine but I love how it feels in my hands.
Fastest longbow I've shot is my St. Joe River longbow! 60" bow 54@28 and getting 196 fps from a 650 grain arrow. True custom will do grips most any way you want and made in southern Michigan. Very stable and forgiving to shoot!
Rob
St. Joe River
As seen by all these posts, the difference in speed among most is minimal. Only a chrongraph can tell the difference in over 90% of them.
For me, I take into account other factors as well, such as smoothness, accuracy, noise level...and of course, LOOKS.
I agree - it's kind of funny how we like to rate a bows given speed.... no mention on the archer. I can tell you this, I have a pretty clean release and yet when I went to Rick Welch's school he consistently shot my bow 5 - 10 fps faster then I could (same draw length, same arrow)... it was all in his release and rock solid bow arm and anchor.
Your release, bow arm, creeping and a host of human influences will greatly affect any bow's speed. If you want to get a fast bow - work on your form first as that is probably the biggest variable in bow speed (outside arrow weight and poundage)
If you want a good lesson on how form affects speed shoot some Technohunt which registers velocity for every shot...a sloppy release can easily lose you 10 fps

I want to thank everyone for the input. I do appreciate your help. I will look into everyone's input, but I can tell you anything over $800 is out of the picture for me. I have friends who spend $1600 to $2300 for a bow I won't do that it is a bow and $800 is my limit even if I had a billion in my bank account I would not spent that much on a bow.I can see spending $125 or so on good arrows, but fancy wood does not make a bow shoot any better. That is for looks only.
Again I thank everone for your help. Now I have a lot of research to do.
i cannot put input into a bow, what type you shoot, and preference, but i do understand wanting performance but i do have a couple of questions for you...if your looking for blazing fast speed, you wont find it amongst trad archery, if your wanting performance, you will find that any bow you pick up will have performance, maybe not the performance your looking for but it does have performance. also, dropping 10# you will not see the same performance/speed as your old set-up..but my question is this, why are you only looking at a hybrid bow? why not a well built long bow or recurve? there are very good bows of these types out there too...this is just my two cents..again may not be what youre looking for but i would explore all other options before settling on one type of bow based on an article in a magazine, again these are just my opinions...i hope you find a bow that you are wanting and in your price range and i wish you luck on your adventure. i know that if you have any issues this place is a good place to be. shoot straight and have fun
$800 will get you almost any used bow out there...just saying...
Zipper Nitro and Centaur. Like Gringol says, you can find any of these for $800 in the classifieds.
Not looking to buy right now I'm waiting for the surgery and I'm having some heart problems at the momment. Waiting to see if a Pacemaker is needed. I may not get soulder surgery till June if I need heart fixed first. I don't want to change to a recurve in fact I have a Bruin TD 2 sets of limbs 60 and 70 pounds Huntmaster. I will be selling for $300 plus shipping very soon if anyone is inteested. Also a Great Northern Brushbow I think 62 inch 67@27 excellent shape $225 I will be selling soon. I can no handle this weight anymore.
Oops. Double post.

I totally agree with this. I recently bought a chronograph, and the biggest thing it has taught me is my form in the most important thing with regards to speed. I can change arrow, strings, etc. and not affect my speeds near as much as a sloppy release or collapsing on the shot.
Get whatever weight bow you need for your medical conditions and then work on good form.
Ditto on the Holm-Made Osprey
There's a 48@28 Cari-bow Wolverine in the classifieds right now...... Great bows, very fast, quiet and forgiving.
A&H or Centaur from my experience. Both are plenty quick. Never chronoed the 2,but just from shooting them both,I'd say A&H is faster. I love mine, sweet bows. rat'
Hands down my Big Foot Sasquatch t/d from Kirk, fast and whisper quiet as well as deadly accurate.
If I had to bet my life on the fastest D and R that would shoot lights out I would bet on a Sasquatch.
or a Centaur,. Or an Eaglewing.
God bless, Steve
Sent ya a PM
Legends Cyclone hands down.
I had an A&H ,currently own a sasquatch and a MOAB. All of them have their trade offs in my experience. My next bow to arrive will be a hybrid Whippenstick. I just like that design. I've often read claims that some of these designs will rival recurves in performance. Maybe its me, but my Assenheimer will shoot any of my longbow arrows quite a bit faster. But here's the kicker I would rather shoot the hybrids. I will say this , you do not HAVE to spend 1,200.00 to get a nice hybrid.
Hello:
Blacky's website may NOT be current. He's been busy and as of a month ago had not posted his completed results for A&H's Gen-2 ACS longbow limbs. Speak with Larry at A&H about what Blacky told him the Gen-2's have achieved. I have two sets and they are exceptionally smooth.
Regards,
Kevin
I've shot a lot of different bows. Yes, some are faster than others by a bit. But speed is way down on my list of things I want in a bow.
Far more important is how the grip fits your style, noise, smooth draw, etc. When it comes down to it there are plenty of bows that are all plenty quick enough and not very different from each other in the speed department. No amount of speed can make up for a bow that doesn't fit your style.
Thanks Guys I think I have enounh inforformation to keep busy looking for months. I'm closing this thread. Appreciate all your help who contributed their time nand input.
For speed, nothing can touch an A&H. Second would be a Hummingbird. Whips are right up there also.
What "Whip" said!!
For speed there are a lot of very fast bows..TimberGhost, Whippenstick,Centaur, Eagle Wing, A&H ACS, BigFoot, Caribow..........
I have shot dozens of different models at shows. Fastest I have shot, pound for pound is the Hill Country K-2.
Bill Matlock longbows... :)
How about a Big Jims thunderchild,Plenty fast, smooth draw, dead in the hand and super quiet with nothing on the string.
Depends on the arrow weight as well. I cna get my MOAB well over 200 fps with lighter carbon arrows, but approach dry fire with mt 63# LB. Like a 650-750 grain arrow and get @180+ fps which is good enough for pigs and deer. Quiet kills, not speed.
Whip nailed it.
"Fast is fast, but accuracy is final" -Wyatt Earp
The fastest I have shot and I've shot a lot is Ken Rohloffs Whippenstick. Check out the old walk the talk thread. Funny thing is, if you look at the bow its not radical looking at all. So it's also very accurate and forgiving. I'm pulling 59 pounds at 30 inches with a 525 grain arrow and getting 193fps. Bill
Leon Stewart SLAMMER.....very fast and Smooth......
I've owned two, an ACS and a Black Swan. The Black Swan shot a flatter arrow, but I like the ACS better.

I have to agree with TJ on this one.

No question the omega archery hybrid is the fastest hybrid i have used or tried. Bow just straight up flings a heavy arrow. Plus they dont cost alot.
give them a look. the owner is really nice and sends you updates through the build and stands behind his work.
