I'm trying to muster up the courage to start on an Osage stave in the garage and could use some visual encouragement. ;)
Let's see your selfbows in the field, on the range, or on the hunt!
Thanks!
The boys and I went on a little rabbit while a while back :)

Man, I want one in the worst way !!!
Great pictures guys.
Pat B and Pat B. just confused the crap out of me for a bit.......
Pat's has a period after his user name. What, are you blind, Chad. d;^)
My advice is to watch every video you can find on Utube about bow making, grab your tools an have at it.
I have been teaching bow making for years, the number one thing that prevents most people from completing a bow; fear of failure. Bottom line; just do it, if you mess up, get another stave and start over, no big deal.
Selfbows are deadly, here is my friend Steve with a nice elk he killed with about a #50 selfbow.

Thanks Eric. I think I fit that category. I hate to fail at anything. Maybe I can use that to my advantage!

Guess you might say that I don't have any reservations regarding the lethality of an Osage Selfbow.
Hopefully, there will be an Alaskan Brown Bear to add in September.
So simple even a caveman can do it. d;^)
Mr LaClair it must be my English heritage but I love the looks and lines of those yew bows.
To You and Mr Francis :notworthy:
These pics, to me, represent the pinnacle of our sport and I applaud you all.
Man, this is making me want to get started soon!! How many of the gang's sponsors sell selfbow tools (draw knives, scrapers, files, etc.)? Any recommendations?
You'll get your best deal on a draw knife at an antique or junk store. The older one have better steel than most new ones and you should be able to get a good one for $20 or less. Just be sure the blade isn't pitted.
You can make a scraper with an old saw blade or disassemble a pair of cheap scissors. A simple 4 way rasp from Lowe's, Home Depot or your local hardware will do the rasping you need.
If you'd rather buy it all new try 3Rivers.
Here's a couple of pics of my fence-post Osage bow.
The Aspen was a bit chewy!!

My son's selfbow
I have killed more deer with a selfbow than any other form of arrow launcher. I spent a number of years on the dark side before I returned to traditional archery.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hunting%20stuff/bigbucksideview.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/hunting%20stuff/bigbucksideview.jpg.html)
Tools, you can make bows with a minimum of tools. I have everything, band saw, belt sander, jointer and every hand tool known to man. With simple tools I would have to spend a couple more hours making a bow than I would with all my power tools, only a couple of hours.
Here is my basic arsenal;
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/bow%20making/bowmakingtools.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/ekrewson/media/bow%20making/bowmakingtools.jpg.html)
Aggressive rasp, half round file, chain saw file for nocks, scrapers and a draw knife. I do have some more aggressive scrapers than the cabinet scrapers shown. One is a half pair of large scissors and the other is a Mystic longbow scraper, both work very well for hogging off wood.
This little tool with greatly aid your bow building process.

Not a great picture of the Osage selfbow, it was a great day in November a few years ago.
Bert.
I knew I should not have opened this thread...... I am so swamped with far to many obligations as it is....but I feel the calling, it's like a distant whisper.......
Anyway, I don't think anything can get better than for a person to craft their own bow and arrows from native materials--- my hat is off to you Gents for keeping the tradition alive and inspiring the rest of us.
My old fishing self bow. A Kurt Brisky osage. I have a new fishing bow in the mail as we speak but I killed a bunch of fish with this one.
