I think we are getting real close now to a break in this weather. 20 degrees colder than normal since late Dec. kept every snowflake that fell in a blanket of white until this last weekend. Yesterday aft.got nice,so I grabbed my bow,my hatchet, and my camera. Sheds, stumps, and scenery are all going to be fair game.
I love burning wood, but I am ready for a warmup...

Did not take long to come across a pile of these.

I always like to check out creek crossings, preferably where they are coming down. I figure the jolt might shake one loose.

Another good crossing...

This was the feeding area this winter. I probably went through a 1/2 ton of corn and sweet feed.

I am going to follow this trail for awhile, who knows?????

I am carrying my Holm-Made today. Chad makes an excellent bow.

Spooked this guy on the way up through the woods. I think he knows the season is over...

There is a stand of Hemlocks that I always like to check out, lots of beds and some nice rubs. I spotted this not long after I got to them....

Poor little bugger.
A yearling, and no buttons, not sure what caused her death, and did not disturb her. She did seem to have a bulge on the right side of her jaw...

Something has discovered her and has been working at the back end...

Hey Craig....I'm wondering if we'll find any winter kill down here in the SE part of the state. This is the first time in years we've experienced a major deer issue around the house. They've been eating everything, including holly's which is rare. Fortunately winter has broken and we are back to grass in most areas. You can also see a hint of green in southern exposures as the green briar starts to turn. It was a long winter for everyone, especially the deer.
This area is not far from the first bench and always draws some good bucks down during the rut.
This is a pretty good rub.

Nice and wide...

A few berries left.

A sunny, milder day,a beautiful bow,and a nice rub. That's what memories are made of...

Well, I have followed some good trails, hit two bedding areas and no sheds, usually how it goes for me. Taking a sit, then head down over towards home.Beautiful day....

So as I am heading down towards the creek I see all this deer hair in a little seep.

I look around a little more then spot this...

I am still heading down and I know wherever the rest of this deer is has got to be below me also.
Yep.

Not a lot left.

Cleaner than the butcher shop...

I have never come across a predator kill before where they even chewed the ears off. It has been a long cold winter.

The circle of life I guess. These guys are the extreme hunters and survivors. The saying goes,"When everything else is gone, all that will be left is coyotes and crows."

Thank you guys. Mother Nature can be a fickle lady. I rode my bike out to work last night in 60 degree weather, tomorrow night it will be in the teens.....

BRO!WHAT!? You grow MILK DUDS in your yard! that is awesome! I wanna live there. No serious. That was a terrific stroll through the woods as sad as it is to see those poor deer dead and eaten. Such is the circle of life and it must be appreciated... I hope it warms up soon for you!
Downright pleasant pictures. Thanks for taking us along for your walk.
Tims post is the funniest thing I've read in months. "Winters broken and I can see green" We just got 14 more inches on top of the 120" so far this year. Still laughing but the men in white suits are here for me now so I have to go snow blow the roads. Craig I really love your pics and the fake ground scenery.
I love posts like this! Thanks for sharing!
Great post, thanks
Great to walk the PA woods again. Grew up in Union county.
