Title: prototype european mount
Post by: Jack Skinner on March 10, 2014, 09:48:00 AM
I was looking for a way to mount an antelope I had taken a couple of seasons back. I wanted something different from the normal base/pedestal/plaque. So I came up with this from a thick piece of maple I had laying around.

The idea beeing to prop up skull somewhat. Here it is with black and red transtint and poly finish

Here with european mount in place

Here it is in its final resting place at work

I already have a couple of ideas on improving. Like joining a dark wood with a slightly smaller and  liter wood and routing the slightly bigger bottom and rounding the top

Any other ideas to improve?

I have something like that on a couple of chamois skull mounts. They look so much better tipped up like that.

Nice work.

Thanks guys like I said its a prototype and I have a few new ideas to improve. But much happier than with the ones that stick well out from the wall.

Curious, how thick is the wood at the thickest point? That looks like a pretty hefty chunk of Maple.

Tks. Pat

Thanks Mat good to here from you, you should come by and take advantage of the shop.

Tater it was a thick maple board two inches thick, I am going to use some one inch and glue them next.

Whiley no I didn't but I have had some folks say they thought it might be close to book

Very nice!  Like the way you angled the top portion so the skull sits more naturally.
