Title: best wood combo for copperhead skins?
Post by: PaulDeadringer29 on March 07, 2014, 08:13:00 PM
Got a new bow on order and would like to put copperhead skins on it. Any suggestions on what wood would go with them? Been considering desert camo actionwood as I haven't seen one like that yet. Pics of your copperhead skinned bow are welcome. Thanks.

Osage or yew.  Something in the yellow phase brings the skins out the best.

Limbs need to be light colored. I put these on a maple/clear glass limb. I like woods w/ a red color to them. This is Pauduk and leopard wood.

Winge and Mirado with my coppers. Skins are very thin so what color the bower puts under them makes a big difference in how they turn out. I told Bill on this bow that I wanted the skins to have a brown tone instead of an orange tone so he sprayed the limbs with a tan color paint before he layer the skins down.

I will say, that Prairie Drifter's bow has as great color match between the riser and the copperhead skins.

Thanks for the pics guys. That Stalker is sweet. I'm getting on the list for a Timberghost recurve and am thinking of skinning it.

Here's an option...
Instead of covering a killer set of exotic veneers,
use a pair or unstained actionwood lams on the backs to be covered with skins. Then use your fancy veneers on the bellies for all to behold.
It will save you a couple of bucks, and wont hide natures artwork. You can have your bowyer stain it or leave it plain and bright.
If your copperheads are dark and grayish, stain the actionwood with colonial maple, gunstock, or golden oak to bring out the copper color in the skin. If they are already of great color, just plain actionwood is very light and will pop the natural color.
If you want to tone it down to darker colors, just use darker stain to give your desired outcome.
All copperheads are different,  depends what you want your end result to be.
The photos above show how awesome these snakes really are.
One of my copperhead suppliers just sold two black and gray phase  snakes to a taxidermist. I wish I grabbed those!
