Title: Interesting head gear, how old do you think he is?
Post by: Glenn Carl on September 18, 2007, 10:42:00 AM
I have gotten a couple of trail cam pictures of this buck this year but have never laid eyes on him in the past.

Also looks like a little good natured sparing starting to happen here in IL.

And look who shows up 5 minutes later.

3.5 was my first thought as well, still pretty sleek with little swagger....

Is that actual flash photography?  Or is that some other lighting?

Ray, The pictures were taken with a 3 mega-pixel Stealth cam. Just a cheap trail cam I got on close out last year after season. It does use a flash at night when taking pictures.

If he was in MT my guess would be 3 1/2, in Illinois my guess is the same as hill boy, 2 1/2.

Hillboy - I agree. Don't think he's 3 1/2 and boy if he IS only 2 1/2 he is going to grow into a whopper dog if you let him.

I'd bet a nice new shiny quarter he's only 2 1/2. Look at his back and belly...no sag whatsoever....short, very lean body with no scarring.....short, straight lined snout with minimal graying...and a light brow.

That is a young deer (in my opinion of course). If you have that property to yourself and think he'll make it a year or two more......well.....

................I'd still shoot him with Trad gear!

Two and 1/2 half as well and bet he is playing with his one and half old step brother in pic #3 but can't really tell if that is him?.

No dip in the top of his snout, got just a hint of sag under his jaw, straight line on belly-chest,chest just starting to hang out the front-- I would say a 3 i/2 year old.

My guess is 3 1/2 from the way he is filled out and neck is not as slender as 2 1/2 yr olds I have seen. JMHO I have only seen deer in Michigan and Texas, so maybe for Illinois he is a year younger. If he came under my stand either way he would have an arrow in him.LOL

3.5 would be my guess.
If you controll his destiny, it'd be nice to see what he's got next year. If not, he's old enough to taste mighty fine!

1st picture I'd say 3.5 but then he looks younger in the 2nd pic. If I had to, I'd put my $$ on him being an exceptional 2.5

I'd say 3.5 also.

Hill Boy,  If I get lucky enough to shoot him this year does that mean you want me to wait 3-4 years to post the pictures?    :saywhat:   I have about 35 acres of CRP, creek bottom and timber ground that I hunt. I share that with my brother and father in law(both wheelie bow shooters). I have 70 acres that borders to the north of me that is prime whitetail ground that no one can hunt. Other than that every other field all around us that has cover in it has someone hunting in it. The odds of me seeing this deer during season are pretty slim, but I will be out there trying the 1st of October and every other day I get a chance. I will keep you posted. Glenn
