Title: gettin it done with homemade bows
Post by: Slickhead on March 03, 2014, 03:53:00 PM
how many have got their critters with a homemade bow.
Im guessing that would be the ultimate high.

Shot a doe at 5 yds 3 years ago with a osage self bow I made 20 years ago I backed with rawhide from my sons first longbow deer when he was around 12 years old. Still very special feeling. Made around 75 bows since 1983 when I broke a limb on a Silvertip and didn't want to pay more money for a set of limbs. The limb breakage was my fault not the bow by the way. Had a lot of fun and never looked back. Shoot a 68 inch locust bow I made now but thinking of building a 70 incher for ground hunting. Call me nuts but I love long bows. It's my ultimate high.

Been shooting homemade bows almost exclusively for the past 30 years.  Got this guy several years ago with a 75@28 recurve I made in the late 80's.  He weighed in at 210# dressed, my heaviest to date.  I've made recurves, longbows, and selfbows and love them all.  But, we are blessed to have talented bowyers and I love their bows too!

There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of taking game with bows you've built yourself.  I tend to build a new bow or two every year for my hunting.  It's one way to extend the anticipation and enjoyment of the hunting seasons.

2012's doe and 2013's buck.  It was my biggest buck ever with any weapon and my first with a bow I made.

And a smaller bear with the same bow.

I've killed six deer with my hand made bows, and a dozen or so squirrels. I actually never killed anything with an arrow shot from a bow I didn't make.

To be completely honest though, the thrill of taking an animal with a bow is still so new to me that I don't think it would have mattered if I made it or not!

Thanks, John, for bringing this back up.  Here's one I got in 2012 with a long bow I made.

Great thread! The primitive side is calling me. I have cut some wood, much of it was to twisty for staves when split. I plan to cut an iron wood when the sap is flowing this spring. This past Jan/Feb I cut 6 dozen shoots that look to be some kind of red oiser or silky dogwood. They are bundled and drying/ seasoning in the garage rafters. I need to stop reading about it and go out to the garage and scrape some wood until it bends, and learn a little a long the way.
