what options other than hot melt are out there?

JB-Weld, epoxy, Gorilla Glue, thick CA.

But hot melt remains the best for ease of swapping heads or replacing/reusing.

lots...epoxy,Bohning Ferr-L-Tite Cool Flex, Bohning Ferr-L-Tite, Kimsha Quick-Stick Point , come to mind.
I strongly prefer industrial strength hot glue....easy to apply, easy to remove, doesn't get too brittle in the cold.

...are you gluing the head to a wood shaft?
if gluing a head to a screw in adapter I might use epoxy or JB weld.

I still prefer hot melt and if you want really tough hot melt use Amber Stanley, available at most hardware stores.
