Well guys, wish me luck. Although my retirement and living dreams have been for Northern Idaho, I may be moving to Wyoming near the town of Powell. I teach Special Education so there always seems to be available jobs and this particular school seems to really be interested in me. I have a SKYPE interview this upcoming week. I am looking at the towns of Powell and Lovell as places to live. Any comments, thoughts, about the area for hunting, hiking, camping, fishing, and all facets of outdoor living would be appreciated. Since it is in the Bighorn Basin and not far from Yellowstone it sounds like close second to Heaven to me..... :)
Jerry,
You got my email, didn't you? Good luck on your interview. Wyoming is a great place.
Pat
I've never been to Wyoming, but it is one of those places that I would love to go. It does sound like heaven to me...in fact I'm a little jealous! :D
Jerry, I think you will love it. I lived in SW Wyoming through the '90's, and left because of a family reason. I think I have missed it every day since I left, and plan on retiring there. It is great, and the Powell area is very beautiful. There is some great hunting available in the state. I am envious!!
Yes Pat, thank you for the email
Good luck. If you need a hunting partner, please let me know. I will be back to that State many times in the fall.
Powell is a great town and area. You got the bighorns to the east and the rockies to the west( watch out for grizzly.) :scared: You also have great flyfishing either direction with walleye not to far.Peasant and chukar hunting too.
Good luck
It's a great place. Though I think they frown on shooting the peasants.
;)
I have been to Lovell.....kind of a neat area. Big Horn Canyon was not to far away, that was cool also. I hope it works out for you.
Charlie, I thought most of us were peasants????
As bad as game numbers are getting in Montana, I've been toying with the idea of moving there my own self. I went down there in the spring of 2010. Went down to Laramie, then back to the North Platte to do some flyfishing. I loved all the towns we stopped in. Everybody was pretty laid back. The atmosphere reminded me of Montana 30 years ago.
I could move to Wyoming pretty easy. If they just had a plywood mill that needs a millbilly.
Jerry,
Good luck on your interview. Powell is a really nice little town. It has about the nicest weather of any town in Wyoming. Usually not a bunch of snow and the wind is almost non-existent compared to the rest of Wyoming. Should be great hunting and fishing very close to you and some of the most spectacular scenery with the Bighorns on one side and Yellowstone on the other.
im a lifer in north idaho and the way things have been going wyoming is sounding better all the time...in case u didn't know it we have lost a lot of hunting season in the last couple of years...
fishing is just plain crowded...SO...enjoy wyoming while it's still enjoyable !!!
WY is an awesome place to live can I come!!
My brother and I had some property between Powell and Lovell outside of a little crossroads called Deaver. The pheasant hunting was unreal and there were some good deer. It was tough bowhunting on our place as it was mostly ground hunting, but my brother took a couple of whitetails with a rifle that went almost 160 inches. It was hot, dry country in the summer.
D.P.
Good luck Jerry!
If I were to move anywhere, Wyoming would probably be first choice. ;)
You will have the Big Horns to the East and Shoshone Natl Forest (Grizzly/Wolf and BIG country) to the west. I would recommend living in Cody. It's only about 30 minutes from Powell. You can be fishing the North Fork of the Shoshone anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes from Cody and all the way upstream to Pahaska Teepee the river is a stone's throw from the highway. Yellowstone Natl. Park is right there also. Cody has much more to offer for shopping, eating, etc. but will be more expensive and is pretty busy during the tourist season. Once you see Cody it will be tough to live anywhere else. There is a nice outdoor archery range about 10-15 minutes East of town. Standard butt targets and walking course and some Trad guys in the area.

Tav, you forgot to mention the Buffalo Bill Museum. :saywhat:
We've been to Cody several times, I like Cody! ;)
When you drop out of the Bighorns on Alt 14 things are pretty stark along that road, but oh my, the critters we saw while messing around on the alpine meadows in the Bighorns had me thinking about leaving Iowa this summer.
Born n raised in buffalo and lived in Cody for over 8 years and recently moved back home. Absolutely love Cody country and try to keep hunting there every chance I get! Give me a shout when you get settled n can talk about the country! Of all the places I've backpacked or ridden the Cody country is my favorite! It's big wild country--gotta luv it
14A is one of the most scenic highways around, but then so is the Beartooth Hwy north of Cody. And Hwy 14 through Shell Canyon ain't no slouch, either. All of these are close to the Bighorn basin, and provide a playground for us outdoor types. Miles and miles of public ground to enjoy.
Lovell is on the west side of the Bighorns with Sheridan on the east side. I spent about 8 great days hunting up in the bighorns back in 1985. I saw and stalked within 12 yards of what would be new world record PY Shiras bull, off the highway in a beaver meadow.
Beautiful country! It is more arid on the west end than the east in Sheridan.
I forgot about the archery range. Its a great place to shoot a few after work.
Wow! I can't think of a better area of the country to move to. I used to think I wanted to retire in Colorado... but it seems to be headed the wrong direction (in a lot of ways).
Hope your surgery is working out for you.
Good luck on the interview and potential move!!
I'll send you a pic of the elk I take with your old BW.
Wayne
Thanks Wayne....surgery went well! I'm not sure I am going to be able to shoot trad again though. Might have to go back to wheels and/or gun...
Jerry, you didn't ask in the PM about it but I'll let you know now, housing is much cheaper in Powell and surrounding areas. Cody is ridiculous. Pick up a real estate guide in a gas station or store when you get here. Heck, if I have time, I'll mail you one. Been shoveling a mess of snow lately and looks like more on it's way so it may be a few days.
The real estate guide is hard to miss, it's as big as a RMEF magazine.
Jerry, glad your surgery went well good luck with your interview & possible move to Wyoming. I really like Cody, I don't feel out of place wearing my cowboy hat there! ;)
Frank V, you shouldn't feel out of place wearing a cowboy hat anywhere....I know I don't.
Wyoming is an amazing place. I was out there in 2012 antelope hunting and hoping to draw another tag for this year's season. It wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to live there.
You're from Illinios so you are used to corn and soybean fields. I am from Ohio so am used to them, even planted my fair share of them, too. First time through the Big Horn basin, after passing through all the rugged country from the Black Hills through the Big Horn Mountains, I was astonished and, to tell the truth, saddened to see how much agriculture was in the basin. Don't get me wrong, it is a lovely spot. Much better than Ohio or Il has, but I wasn't expecting so much corn and soybeans, hay and beet fields in that 80 mile stretch between the Big Horns and Rockies. Would I live there? In a heartbeat.
There are places in Wyoming that are the ugliest spots on earth and there are areas that I've not seen their equal in beauty. The basin isn't in either of those extremes but is close enough to the beautiful locations to be very attractive to this midwestern man.
Be sure to visit Frank's Peak just west of Meteste. Gorgeous high country. Don't forget to drive the Ten Sleep route on the western side of the Big Horns, either. So much to see, so little time.
My personal preference is the east slope of the Big Horn Mountains. Someday, I might just make it there for a prolonged stay.

I'm getting less & less concerned about wearing it anywhere.
Here a lot of folks wear them. I fit right in!
Hope to get back to Cody this summer.
That Buffalo Bill Museum is fantastic. ;)
And a saddle shop on most every corner.
It's the Buffalo Bill Center of the West now. That's where my wife works.
Jerry, if you need a real estate guide PM your address.

Thanks Barney, it's been a couple of years since we've been there. I really look forward to when we can get to Cody. A must see spot! ;)
Well....I have been offered job. I will take a few days to think about it, absorb it, and research some more. I would probably have to rent for a year so I hope there is a chance to find something to rent in Powell, Cowley, Lovell, etc...
Good luck with your decision Jerry. I've traveled through the area and love it... but that is just visiting during good weather.
Hope whatever you decide works out well.
Congrats Jerry,
There should be housing, at least in Powell. You may have some culture shock moving from Illinois, but if you like the outdoors, it should be positive culture shock. Remember, folks don't neccessarily want to know how you did it 'back home'; Illinois and Wyoming could be on two different planets on social and political issues.
Welcome to the Cowboy State; enjoy all that we have to offer.
Here is a view of the Powell area this morning...

Congratulations. I think you will like Wyoming, I do.
Let us know?

Hey, the roads look clear out there! Better than the IL forecast for the weekend - take that job quick!
I'm not sure if that photo was a selling point.

Great sign! And a great state! Loved the times I've hunted there. Wish oklahoma was a little closer...
