Post by: traditional1970 on February 23, 2014, 12:24:00 PM
Does anyone have the link to the elk antler riser I saw here recently.  I lost the link.

Don't have a link but I think Bill with Zipper bows has posted some in the past. Try the search function, should bring some up.

If you mount limbs from a different bow and the riser is shorter what does it do to draw weight?

guk, you can't swap limbs with other VooDoo risers each bow is a true custom. I'm not sure about Bill's elk risers.  cacciatore, I love the riser it fits my hand great. I'm trying to sell a couple of bows so I can have Sixby build me a new set of limbs for it. jean-vincent, the first VooDoo was 80 + pounds and last I heard still going strong. The right handed bow is Todd Szmania's the coolest bow I think Steve made I'll get some more pics.

Take care guys

The draw weight will go up about 5-6 pounds for every two Inches.  18" riser=50#'s  a 16" riser would be 55-56# . but that can vary on the limb design and pad angle. if you want the same weight, lay your pads back a bit and adjust the grip location for a decent brace height.... if you limb design has enough preload it should be fine. if it has too much pre-load she'll stack up on you.

Hello, Steve:
One respected builder of elk risers told me that he puts a "rod" in his, but the riser is amply strong without it.  I had two separate conversations about a month apart about limbs.  In the first he indicated he preferred bamboo and glass over foam and carbon and in the second conversation said either bamboo or foam with glass, but not carbon.  The lead time was almost a year so I passed.

If serious, might want to be very clear about what works and doesn't work for limbs.

Regards,  Kevin

The antler W/OUT reinforcement WILL have issues in time. It will continue to shrink w/ age like all antlers do. I know because I have a elk antler riser that's now 15 years old and it's starting to separate so very slightly. It's so filled w/ epoxy and reinforcement, it still handles 60lbs draw weight.

Sounds like bill does a lot of work to the antlers. Not just an antler.

I have thought about ordering  a Zipper elk riser/bow but have held off as they only come in 58"  or longer length. I really wanted a 56" model bad.

Hey Kevin,Thanks for the info.I was thinking of the rod,but I see a problem when trying to drill in the limb bolts.I was thinking of drilling into each end with a 1/2' or 5/8" bit to hollow the center.Meeting in the middle then filling both ends with G2 epoxy.Any bowyers doing this or similar ?
Title: Re: elk antler riser
Post by: overbo on February 26, 2014, 07:31:00 AM
You cut the antler down the center and clean out all the old marrow. Then fill w/ epoxy once it's glued back together or when it's in 2 halves. I know because I helped Bob Thompson when he built mine.
Always wonder why a bowyer wouldn't make a real antler riser and make a mold using that antler reproduction stuff to make the working antler riser.

Hello, Steve:
Best to call Zipper. He will tell you what works and WHY.

By the way, OVERBOW touched on the shrinkage issue.  Never thought of that!  Guess Father Nature is telling us something. There's a joke here somewhere....We are so fortunate to have your wise counsel.

Kevin

Funny thing, I have never made one but am in the process now. My decision was to cut the antler in two lengthways then fill the two halves with epoxy and then glue back together LOL. Great minds. I was thinking about adding in a piece of phenolic into each end to set the bolt into . It would never be seen but it would give me some faith in the setup.
God bless, Steve
