Title: What a surprise! (Samick Stingray)
Post by: SuperK on February 21, 2014, 11:11:00 PM
I went to a friends house today to shoot some arrows.  He has a small archery shop in his backyard with a nice range with some 3D targets out back.  He has recently starting shooting trad bows and stocks some trad items as well.  Last week he shot a Samick Stingray and was so impressed with it that he ordered a few to keep in his store. (He owns and shoots a Black Widow by the way)  When I arrived today he was setting one up for himself.  We got to playing around with it and boy oh boy did I get a surprise! I shoot a 50lb @ 28 Predator Hunter and at my draw length I get 168 fps with my arrows.  Guess what?  The Stingray was 5 pounds lighter (45 @ 28) and it threw the same arrow at 160 fps!  Not just once but consistently.  On top of that, it was the quietest recurve bow with a bare D97 string I have ever heard.  My Predator without slincers, limbsavers and Hush Puppies sounds like a 32 cal. pistol being shot.  (Well, maybe I did exaggerate a bit but it is a LOT louder.) After he fitted the Stingray with some catwhiskers and limbsavers it sounded like a R/D longbow.  That is one sweet bow!  It is quick, quiet, points and shoots like a dream!  The grip fits me like a glove (I use a med.) plus it is a sharp looking bow.  All that AND it is priced less than $230.00!  I am impressed!  I'm also glad he had 2 of 'em.            Hey, everybody needs a back-up bow, don't they?

Thanks for the mini-review. I've looked at this bow in the past with thoughts of a bowfishing rig. Seems it would serve in the woods as well as the sea!

I have owned three of them in different weights. Very nice bows! I draw 29" and that is the max in my opinion for this bow. If my draw was 28" I would still be shooting them.

I started with a Samick Red Stag 1 piece recurve.  I never should have sold it.  Samick makes quality bows at an exceptional price.

There are some real nice bows at a low price point, I know that for most part you get what you pay for but there are some exceptions.
