I am getting ready to order a PCHx. I have the draw length, weight, bow length, tiller and grip figured out. What I am seriously struggling with is the wood. I'm not real fond of dark limbs or white wood. I like the look of curly maple or quilted maple but with a tan stain on them. If anyone has some pics of stained curly, tiger or quilted maple limbs, I would be appreciative if you would post a pic. What riser wood would compliment limbs that color best? I was thinking black walnut or zircote. I am open to other limb veneers as well. Thanks for any help.
I suggest that you call and speak with either Roger Toby or John. Even go to the BW site and click on the widow wall. Toby has posted some picks of some wood combos. There may be something there that you may like. Good Luck!
I was looking the other day on their website on their stock bows there was a picture of stained curly maple limbs. Can't remember which recurve I was,I was looking at all of them.I have a buddy with many Widow's of their exotic woods and the last PL he ordered he called them to dicuss woods. They are a great bunch of guys and would be more then happy to talk about woods and their bows.
Leave the red out, purty! IMHO I have a thread here on my new to me widow PSAX. Also a thread called widow gallery, some beautiful bows there.
It took me two weeks to pick the woods for the pair of KBX's I ordered several weeks ago. Toby and Roger are a great help but you still have to make the decision :) I thoughT real hard about a cocobolo riser with a strip of stained gray curly maple in the riser with curly maple gray stained limbs. Brown stain may also work. I ended up with a zebra wood /zircote combo and B/W ebony model.
OR-You could go with PCHv limbs stained to match and "X" riser wood of your choice and add overlays of the riser wood to the limb butts. Keep the red! There are somebows that are blacked out that do look pretty sharp, but to me with the red gone it looks like the logo is missing. On my Kingwood PSAX's no issues with silver streaked glass (darker wood). If I were to order another PSAX it would be made of Black and White Ebony.
No get rid of the red. LOL Seriously, I like red with some wood combos others I like black only glass. On my zebra KBX I went with black and white glass riser/limb tips. I had a old zebra wood bow with B/W glass I loved the look it had.
You can also have a look at the ironwood V option. I have both ironwood and exotic wood Widows and I am impressed with the ironwood for looks, weight, durability and quality of grain. My ironwood Widows are real classics that are aging rather well. For many other bowyers ironwood is an exotic option.
If I were ordering a new BW, I would go with all black & white ebony or tulipwood.

This one had zircote riser but can't seem to find pic of riser. Both were curly maple. First one natural, second stained.
I went with birdseye maple limbs and riser on my pch-x...but that was my preference, if any one has the olive ashlimbs that might be close to what you're looking for...not too dark but not too light. I went with birdseye because you don't see that color much. What ever you choose, I think you'll be happy, can't beat a widow!

The stained limbs are exactly what I was thinking... Thank you!
The olive ash is a good look in the limbs.

saw pics of em today... that is a awesome pair of bows !!!
Yep they turned out even better than I had hoped. I shouldn't be surprised though the last several black widows I ordered have all be awesome. It seems they don't make ugly bows
Have a Greybark and a PSAV and the one in my hand is the one I am in love with at the time. Both bought used and really like them. Roy
I'll help you order one as long as I get to help you shoot it. ;) You need to make a trip to their shop. They have a whole wall of bows to actually get your hands on and shoot. Like these gentlemen have said anyone there will help in any way they can. Great bunch.
Just a suggestion but have you thought about koa in the limbs. It is just a little bit darker than the stained maple but it's natural beauty is unparalleled in my opinion and it doesn't need any stain. It really goes well with a Cocobolo or Zircote riser. Just my 2 cents.
