Title: best ilf limbs for hunting and target
Post by: Fastltz on February 17, 2014, 04:09:00 PM
I going to get a pinical2 by TT and start off with the black max limbs. I however want to get better ones soon. I've heard of hex and sky but what other top quality limbs are out there. I will mainly hunt with the bow but want a light set of limbs for stumping and 3d and such. Also are there any limbs to just stay away from.

That's going to be difficult to say the best as there are so many ILF limbs out there. How much are you wanting to spend? You can get a good quality carbon/wood limbs for around $250 or can spend as much as $600 to $700+ for top quality carbon/foam limbs.

Dryad ACS limbs are as good as it gets.  He is also a sponsor.

Not saying their the best but I really like Dryad Static tip recurve limbs. Like they say.....you get what you pay for. But even some of the more economical limbs shoot just fine.

A vote for the Morrison max1 limb, American made and a darn fine limb from a sponsor.

Its hard to say anymore. Sky, Border, Dryad, and Morrison would be what I looked at first. They all offer lots of performance options and price points.

I've only shot a 1/2 dozen different limbs for comparison and haven't shot the Dryads.

Border has a new limb that is supposed to be better than his Hexx 6- if you can get past the shepards hook look of them. I've shot the Hex5 and they felt good with almost a slight letoff at full draw.

Almost all of the foam limbs were fantastic. The W&W Innos and SF Elite foams are great. The SF elites are probably the best high performance bang for the buck [about $300] Alt Services

The SF Carbon/wood limb at $170 is excellent and I bet anyone used to shooting custom bows would be shocked at how fast and smooth they are- especially for the price.

I have several sets of the TT limbs and a set of the Dryad ACS RC and the Dryads are night and day better and you can get a way with a lot less draw weight with them to get the same performance.

I have the same thoughts as Fastltz. Currently I have a set of the SF Elites and they are very nice limbs. But a few years ago I had a set of Border hex5 wood cores and really liked the way they felt and the way they performed. But things happen and I had to part with em. Now I'm thinking about picking up a set of Dryads or Max1's..... but which one? I can only do this once. Now that I think about it, I do like the feel of a foam core in a standard limb so I should probably go with Max1's.

I do worry about stability, are they going to be as accurate as my SF's?

I like the Border HEX 6s the  most of the ILF limbs I have had.

Morrison Max I or the Win&Win Winex are the ones that live at my house.

I have two sets of BF Extremes and I love them. I hear TT Extremes are also real good for less money but have never shot them.

I also have a set of Black Max and had a set of Dryad Epics but neither will run with the BF Extremes.

You didn't say if you wanted the recurve or longbow limbs? I have Morrison carbon/foam recurve and Centaur carbon/bamboo longbow limbs. Both are excellent performers, with a slight edge to the Centaur limbs which are a bit smoother and quieter. I have had also a set of Black Max recurve limbs (noisy, to me) and Morrison longbow (foam, glass, noodles to me). Best is to try a few before you decide, but you can't really go wrong with any of the top bowyers' products.

Well I was thinking recurve but I hadn't really thought about longbow...what's the advantage between the 2 or is just preference.

Lots of great suggestions here.  If you want some limbs that are a super value with superb fit and finish and are some of the sweetest shooting and smooth limbs available try a set of Sebastien Flute Elite+.  They have a matte carbon finish and some graphics but are understated enough to be fine for hunting etc IMHO.  I have a set combined with a Black Bear Warf riser and man does the combo shine.  Shoots as good as anything out there.  SF Elite+ normally go for $400 but you can get them on sale from Alternative Sporting Services in the UK for $290 with only about a 10 day ship time.  I've tried a bunch of ILF limbs and so far they are my favorites.  So smooth and actually genuinely quiet for a recurve limb.

I have a set of the SF Ultimate Pro's, SF's fastest limb. I see ASS has them on sale for 259.00, that is a steal!!

This is a generalization and not a set and stone thing. But in general, the recurves tend to be faster and longbows tend to be quieter. Longbow limbs are more stable, meaning they are less likely to twist. I have a set of Dryad ACS RC recurve limbs that are ILF and a set of Dryad ACS CG longbow limbs that are of the bolt down variety. The recurve limbs are way faster and several pounds lighter, This is shooting same arrow, but I can almost get away with no silencers on the string with the longbow limbs. The longbow is what I plan on using this season. It pretty much comes down to personal preference like everything else.

When I had an ILF rig, the Dryad limbs were amazing.  Smooth and ultra fast.  Mike's a great guy to deal with too.

Bill, are the Max-1's quieter than the Winex?

I just got some Max 1's yesterday and they are head and shoulders above some of the others I've tried.  They actually redefine what I imagined was possible from a recurve limb.

Duck, I heard Border is making those limbs for Bob. Their Hex6 limb is supposed to feel like it has a let off as you get to full draw. The Max1 is supposed to be similar in profile (I heard). Do you feel anything like that? Are they fast?
Thanks,
Bill

Maybe I can help until Duck chimes in. I had a set of hex5's and yes, they feel like they let off the last inch or so. Speed wise, 12grs a pound, according to my chrono, 180fps.

I've had only Max1s and BF Extremes. Both very nice and well made. Pretty different profile with the Max 1s much more aggressive curves. Both are smooth and quick.

After shooting them for a couple of weeks, chronographing them, etc. I sold the Max 1s for a $100 loss and still have the BF Extremes.

I'm currently trying to head away from ILF towards 1-piece curves. But, I've heard some very good things about DAS set-ups, especially how quiet they are.

I had Border HEX 4s and WW as well but they weren't ILF.  I liked the WW best. I sold them back to the fellow who originally owned them.

I am thinking my next set will be the BF Extremes that everyone raves about. Who makes the BF, Samick maybe? I have a BB riser being bead blasted, then its off to Sam to be Warfed.I just got into this ILF thing, i bought a used Titan riser and a new set of Black Max Carbons in Med, at 45#, really like it, is a bit noisey, but then again i am shooting GT expedition hunters with 125 tips, so not a very heavy arrow.

Assuming that I was to present a strikingly substantiated clear cut choice, I would be in gross error, thus possibly eliciting a horrific injustice.

Individual perception remains an undeniably significant determining factor in this equation.

Bill, I sense a lot more string tension early in the draw cycle and definitely don't feel any stacking but I can't see I feel a let off.  I haven't shot other vendor's high end carbon/foam limbs so I'm definitely not comparing apples to apples.  But, against the oranges I've been shooting all these years, these things are noticeably faster, quieter and smoother than what I'm used to.

Samick makes the BF Extremes. TT Carbon Extremes are cheaper and are getting good reviews although I've never shot them.

If you can get ahold of a set of Winex limbs, they are extremely fast, quiet, and smooth. I prefer them over my Max 1's, but I couldn't find a heavier set. Sold a pr of 50#ers, hoping to find 55#'s.

Love to try the Winex RC-17, but can't find them at a heavier weight.

Win-Ex foam cores with cross-weave carbon belly and back.  Not inexpensive but a good buy for the buck.

Which Winex limbs are you referring to? Arent there different models?

Winex is one model limb built by Win&Win.

I am currently shooting Win&Win RCX-100s on a DAS riser. They are similar to Winex, but look much nicer (woven carbon fiber).

Do any of the other high end carbon/foam limbs have a very aggressive static tip profile like the Max 1's?  Is that common or a distinguishing feature?  It definitely separate's Bob's other carbon/foam limb from the Max 1 based on my experience shooting the two.

Borders recurve limbs have a similar look to Morrison Archery's MAX 1s.It is not a common look. The deep hooks are definatly a distiguishing feature.

The Borders are offered in HEX 5 and HEX 6s and can have wood or foam cores and they are both double carbon limbs. They are working on a new limb that will be called HEX 7s I believe.I have been extremely impressed with both the HEX 5 and HEX 6 limbs.I have had both in ILF limbs and also on the Black Douglas which are not ILF.The wood core limbs are also very good.Very smooooth and very fast.I have not shot Bobs MAX 1s.

I like my WW SF SHC limbs, they are an older model but are very smooth. I dont know what model replaced it.  They are as smooth as my BM Carbon Extremes but not as light (mass weight), so its not as fast as the Extremes.  Still has excellent cast though and for half the price.

I will be send my Black Bear riser to Sam to get Warfed next week, (its getting bead blasted this weekend)if i put Med limbs on the bow, anyone know what length string i would need for it, and what the braceheight would be?
