Title: Varying Distance 4 Practice
Post by: tracker12 on February 16, 2014, 10:59:00 PM
I have been really concentrating on my form the lasts few weeks and have been shooting exclusively at around 15 steps in the basement.  Well today I went to the club and was shooting out field range at varying distances.  Boy was I hosed up.  Took me  a wile t get back tuned into shooting at different  distances.  I think in the future I need to make sure I vary my shot distances.

Try stump shooting, Tony.  You can vary everything-distance, angle, target size, stance, bow position, distractions, cover thickness.

Actually stump shooting is probably one of the things I like most about traditional shooting.  I went ahead and footed several arrows just for that occasion after breaking a few when I hit a stump that was not as rotten as I thought.  I do have to agree with you that is one of the best ways to practice.  Plus it has the benefit of being in the woods.  I do it also this time of the year in conjunction with shed hunting.

For practice on form and accuracy I really like varied distance shooting of groups. 20-30-40-50-60 yds. As I work on them all the closer ones get really easy and various ranges seem to not bother me.  Plus, it's lots of fun to try and improve at a long distance. The form needed for long range good groups will make shooting close easy. I know this is something people have been doing for a long time but it does address your concern. We have so much snow here it has been difficult to get out there and shoot in the woods without losing a lot of arrows.

I am also a believer in practicing at different distances. That is why I shoot 3d so much. Now that I have moved away from our 24/7 3d range I may have to do the unspeakable and shoot paper targets at know distances. Thankfully there are 3d shoots every couple of week ends to keep my sanity.

Judo point and shoot anything but a stump. I shoot tufts of grass, leaves, branches, pine cones, mushrooms. I don't break many arrows.
