I would like to put some feelers out there early enough to try and plan a hunt in either the Nicolet National forest or Chequamegon National Forest. Im open to suggestions to which one as some other people may have alot more experience with one of these then I do.
I was thinking a weekend hunt because for me it will be a 2-4 hr drive depending which one we hunt at. EVERYONE is welcome, its not just limited to Wisconsin Tradgangers.
Lets hear some ideas, whos intrested and whos not ect...
:campfire: :coffee:
Either close to Minnesota?
Chequamegon is near Hayward, about 4 hours Gator. I used to hunt over there every year until the herd reduced. The Forest is large so that is just one area.
I would highly consider meeting some but would take a few more days. One year opening weekend I saw over 20 deer from my stand, I really enjoy hunting Wisconsin. Non-res license is around $160.
I also have hunted near Drummond that is 30 minutes north of Hayward.
I don't know where the other area is but hopefully it is west, farther east adds time. Four hours is not bad!

Depending where you are from in Minnesota, Chequamegon National Forest probably would be closer
I may interested, i live in Oconto, 30mi north of green bay. I never hunted any state forest, but there is alot an hr or so from me. There are alot people by me that have gone up north hunting for years in and around these nat'l forests.
September?
I hunted the Chequamagon near Clam Lake in November, about '94. Pretty area!

Keep me posted if you go... I may be interested Hayward is not that far especially with a couple extra days to hunt..

Will do, I know some decent areas.
Anything prior to October 30th is pretty quiet, it gets busy around Halloween and after
Wisconsin Traditional Archers always has a club hunt every fall in the Boulder Juction area.
I've hunted both and both have some interesting options, especially if a hunter is willing to hike off the beaten path.
I grew up in Oconto and lived in Green Bay until recently but moved for a new job. If I can get vacation I may be interested.
I'd really like to take part in a Nat'l Forest hunt but can't until the end of October due to other hunts.
I might be interested if I don't draw a WY elk tag...depending on the dates.
Mitch - if it worked out, maybe we could travel together?
Look At Sawyer / Price County Lines. Camp At Lake Of The Pines. Lots Of Area. Note. . . All Of The North Will Be In The Zone Where You Will NOT Get A Doe Tag W Your License, According To Info I Read So Far. You Might Be Able To Buy An Extra Tag (cha-ching). Winter Kill Might Be A Factor This Year As Well.

Richie my boy, Id jump at an opportunity to finish a hunt with you, we've got catching up to do. I have some things keeping me occupied with family this year which has prevented me from some future hunts. That said, should circumstances allow, Id like to get up and share camp with you again. Ive never been up thee before but sure looks fine.

If you guys are serious about this hunt I'd highly recommend either 1. An early season hunt (second or third weekend of September) and look for oaks on ridges. Look at topos and look for the most contour. It's a big area and you need the elevation changes to start breaking down such a large area. Acorns usually start dropping about the time of the opener.
Second option would be around Halloween, and look for funnels/points leading into swamps. Deer numbers are down, wolf and bear numbers are up, and baiting is rampant. If you see any trucks parked on the road, keep going cause he's baiting and those deer aren't going to have normal movement.
My favorite big woods areas are where you see a wade able stream closer to a road. The higher ground on the other side will hold deer. I used to hike way back in, but I don't know if its the wolf pressure or the frequency of bait, but I find more deer sign these days closer to the roads.
I'm no expert, but grew up here hunting northern wisconsin. It's tough hunting, but if you get one you earned it!
Good luck.
Shhhhh. You Are Giving Away The Secrets ! :shaka:

As Kevin mentioned, the Wisconsin Traditional Archers already holds their Fall hunt in the Northern Highland State Forest. Mike Hoffman and Phil run this hunt and get a group site so everyone can be together. It is held in the early part of Oct.
