Title: New bow! Wood options!?!?
Post by: dch03 on February 13, 2014, 08:53:00 PM
Well I've been speaking with Mike Rash of Legends bows and I'm going to pull the trigger on a 64" 45@28 safari elite! I'm so excited...this will be my first custom order ever! I've narrowed my likes/dislikes of wood combos. I know for a fact I want burl myrtle in my limbs and accent stripes in the riser. I need some advice on the riser. I'm thinking maybe East Indian or zircote in there somewhere. Almost certain I want a dark wood on the outside of the riser (footing?) and a lighter color (maybe myrtle as well) in the center. Anyone have some pics of something close to what I'm talking about would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Daniel

My personal favorites would be zircote or Macassar ebony in the riser. If it is a two tone riser I'd go with whatever the limb wood is provided it is suitable. Just my personal opinion, I don't like too many different woods in one bow.

I'm a big fan of leopardwood in a bow. I have links to pics of one I have for sale in the classifieds, and Trux Turning has one in the bow swap thread in the Bowyer's Bench forum. I think it's on one of the page numbers in the early 40's (41 or 42 maybe?).

That's really exciting that you're ordering a custom bow, it sounds like it's going to look great!  This thread was posted a while back of a beautiful Liberty Chief.  It has myrtle veneers and a ziricote riser like you're considering;

I would say, Bocote, Bocote, or Bocote. I love bocote.

All jokes aside, there is a lot of good looking wood out there.

Good luck

With myrtle, I'd go with ziricote.

I like your pick of Ziricote. But there is highly grained and fairy plain pieces out there. Tell your bowyer you are willing to wait for that KILLER piece and you will be thrilled.
