Title: My first knife
Post by: T.Minish on September 16, 2007, 08:46:00 PM
Here are some pics of my first real knife I've ever made:

I'd like to know what you all think about it. It is my first knife I've ever made(not counting the "knives" I made when I was a kid). It is also my first time hardening and tempering steel. It seemed to work well, it sharpens easily, but holds the edge pretty well.

It is made from an old bandsaw blade chunk my Dad gave me. The handle is made of leather/superglue (thanks tradgang build-alongs!).

The only thing that really matters is what you think of it!!

I have always liked the leaf shaped blades.  Looks like it has plenty of beely and point!

Looks like pretty thin blade stock so it should cut like crazy.

I personally like a guard of some type on my knives to keep me off of the blade.  I have used knives without guards a lot, but like the safety of a guard.

Are you hooked??  Knifemaking can be pretty addictive!  If you haven't read the book How to make Knives by Loveless, Barney and Moran.  Amazon has it and it will help you a lot!

Let me know if I can help on future projects.

Tom

Looks great. Just make sure it is not your last knife. It is an addicting hobby.

Thanks for all of your opinions!

Rob: Yes it is on the thin side... I would have chosen a tad thicker if I had the choice.

Tom: First let me say yes, I am hooked. I was hooked on knife making before I even made one lol. I like guards too, I even have some brass to make one out of, but for this project it was a little more painstaking than I wanted.

I only have about 4 or 5 hrs invested in this one. All the work was done with a dremel tool, bench grinder, sandpaper and steel wool.

Also, I hardened it using my BBQ, and tempered it in my kitchen oven.

Thanks again for all the kind words and opinions!

Sorry for the delay... making the sheath as we speak... just remembered someone asked the size so I took a quick pic to show:
