Title: Knapping Material?
Post by: Bow Nut on September 16, 2007, 06:10:00 PM
Could anyone tell me where I can buy flint, obsidian, novaculite, etc. I would prefer sawn slabs but would also be interested in other preforms. I hooked on knappin' and have run out of stuff ta work with... does anyone know that's like? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave

I buy from both of those places.  Great folks, excellent material!

Hey,
Thanks for the links. I've been looking for some places like those.

I got some obsidian on that auction site a couple years ago. All preformed. Cheap in comparison to what I've seen now. I haven't seen them since. I'm cheap though so I need to find some stuff I can just go pick up.

Bow Nut,

I think out by Zanesville there is alot of flint. They just had a big Knap in. Not sure if you can just pick it up and take it though. Of course it is raw not preformed.

Nut: If you need a small stash of obsidian chips, I can send you some for the price of the trouble. What size points are you making? My stuff might be too small ...

I've also purchased from both of the above sites listed.  Good quality rock and supplies with good prices to boot.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Between the 2 links that Ron gave above I found exactly what I was looking and the prices don't look bad either.
Bill, I'm looking for stock that will yield points & blades 1-1/2" x 3" and larger. I'm mostly interested in knife blades right now. If you have anything in that range I'd certainly be interested. Please let me know.
Thanks again to everyone,  Dave
