Has anyone here taken a bear with truly primitive gear? I mean, self bow, stone points etc...
I've got a hunt planned for June in Quebec & I'd really like to go all primitive. I have a few points, but they're tiny (2½" long by 1" wide). I know they'll work, but I'm concerned about the lack of bleeding.
I've got a selfbow in the works now that I could get anywhere from 30-80# out of (I'm comfortable anywhere in that range)
I'd like an idea as to the gear you successful hunters have used (head weight & dimensions, bow weight, overall arrow weight etc...)
Years a go I gave a class on self bows in Massachusetts . 3 of the builders took there bows to Canada on a bear hunt . I do not know if I remember right , but I think 2 of them got bears . I think they had metal broad heads .
Hey Buddy, I know Tom Phillips has done it....I made the arrows for him, Woody made the awesome points for him, I believe he put them together....I have a pic somewhere of the great bear he took.
A nice close range encounter with a black bear is a perfect opportunity to use primitive equipment!!
Good luck!!
Actually Guru , Tom Phillips took his first black bear with a stone point from an arrow I made (Wild Rose shaft) and a stone point I made on a hunt in Quebec, with me filming him shoot the bear.
Thinking about doing it myself this year. Using one of Ted's bows by the way. Have not made up my mind for sure yet though. Im shooting the gear well enough, just can't make up my mind,LOL.
Friend took one in Quebec with his Osage selfbow, cane arrow and steel broad head he made. It weighted 385 pounds and didn't go far with a complete pass through.
It is amazing how well ferns can cover a 385 bear just about tripped over him.
Tippit (Jeff Springer)has done it. He has posted the pictures on here somewhere. Selfbow with stone point. Quick kill at that.
Bill Terry of Ct did it with a self bow and metal trade point that he had made.
Rob,
I was fortunate enough to have taken 3 Quebec Bears with self-bows & stone points.Like Ted F. said 1st one was with his arrow that he made & knapped head and videoed P&Y Kill. The other 2 were with Woody Blackwell heads one being knapped from piece of COMPUTER Monitor Glass,1 snaked arrow by Guru and the other a Ted Fry arrow.
Of all the bears I have arrowed the BEST blood trail has been with Stone Point. The ultimate is to KNAP your own head which is on my list of things to do !!!
Give it a try you will be hooked :-) GOOD LUCK.
Forgot to mention Joe WHIP Lasch did it with Stone Point on of the TG Bear Quest hunts and Zack Crossland did it this past June in Quebec on BQ7.
Tom, can you give me an idea of the size of the heads vs bow weight? I've been told, so many times by my primitive friends, that small points are better, but I know that bear hair absorbs blood. I'd hate to have a successful shot on a big bear with a small point, but lose it due to bad blood for trailing, but I'd also hate to lose one due to poor penetration because my head was too big!
Yes, osage, cedar with steel tradepoint, bear paw/ beaver quiver. The bear in my avitar.
TTT...
That will a cool thing to see....
Well, if I manage it, you'll be there! :D

I have taken two in Manitoba with everything that I made except for the heads. Bears are fun!

Tippit, Love that selfbow, any more pics? Did you make it yourself or share bowyer's name?
Thanks!
I've taken two in Manitoba. I used a 47# osage bow. The first was a 250# bear I shot with a flint head at 8yds. as it stalked the guide and myself. The second was a 5 1/2' bear that was acting very aggressively while I was in my stand. I shot it with an obsidian head and had a complete pass through. Although I found both bears there was very little blood. For the second bear there was none, even at the spot where the arrow went through. Consequently I have gone back using my modern trad equipment for bears. It seemed it would be easy to get a good hit with the primitive gear but never be able to recover the bear.

You stick it in the boiler room and my Bavarian hound will find it. This is exciting.
Oh nice! I didn't know we had a dog :)
Woody is making me some points & I have 3 beauties that Billy Berger made me.
Now, if only the weather would warm up, so I could get outside & get this danged log whittled down!
I will always remember a bear taken with a Damascus tipped arrow.
Steve H. do you still have those pictures of that bruiser bruin?
God bless,Mudd
