I'm sure this topic has been hashed over before but what hand held GPS is affordable and works , I have an older Garmin (8-10 years) that was supposed to be the noodles when I got it but found out it didn't work under tree cover , which is 95% of the places I hunt . And to add to all this I'm not capable of texting , and my cell phone doesn't take pictures . With that in mind what brand GPS would you recommend that's easy to use and works well and yeah not too expensive . Any help would be greatly appreciated , thanks , Fred
Might want to add I just got back from the Harrisburg sports show and even though it is advertised as the biggest show in the USA I couldn't find one GPS unit for sale , Lord willing I will be going to The Wensel's Pig-gig in March and will be needing a GPS , Thanks again , Fred
Most of the garmins now have a high sensitivity receiver that standard on all models. I had the same issues years ago. Now I don't have a problem with the HS receiver

My Garmin Oregon knows where it is in the deepest black holes, but it isn't cheap. It is, however, easy to use.
Have an Etrex-20. Very simple to use and under 200 in price.
PM sent.
Whichever you get make sure WAAS is enabled, the older Garmin came out of the box with that setting turned off. I have a Garmin Map 76cs that I have used for years hunting and crappie fishing with zero problems.
Fred,
Bread Crumbs...just follow them home :) I'm techno inept too!
Yes, the newer Etrex models have much more sensitivity, and can work fine in the woods. It takes a minute for them to get their bearings, but after that all is good. I had the original etrex, replaced a year or so ago with ther HC and well-satisfied.
The simplest GPS I have used is a Bushnell, don't know the model but it is a round shaped unit. It is a simple straight line method that only records three way points and has a compass. I usually mark my camp site, where I park my bike and if lucky where my critter went down. I have a fancy Garmin that has all the bells and whistles but I too am not a tech guy and hate reading manuals, I use it to see how far I hike or bike and that's it ....
double post, oops
I have the Dakota 20. Great GPS and not that much money. The Oregon was too big (though it's not that big) for my taste but may be better for aging eyes.
Their computer software (basecamp) is a very nice feature for saving waypoints as well as planning a hunt. You can also share wirelessly waypoints if both of the hunters have Garmin units capable of doing so. I even downloaded an image of Google earth in basecamp software.
I just got a Garmin Dakota 20 and it's WAAAY more than I expected. Good unit for the money.
Fred, you looking for something to use all the time or one to get you through the Pig-gig. I've got a Garmin Etrex 20 I could send you to get you thru Piggin with the Wensels.
The Garmin Etrex is hard to beat. Small and compact and very accuurate. I have used mine all over the west and last week while in the Swamps of Ft Stewart Ga with no problem. You can also use mine for the week if you need one to try out.
I'll be heading up to the Jarrisburg show of Sat.
Garmin Oregon. Got mine on sale on amazon for around $145.
Thanks for all the great imput guys '
Mike and Tony I really appreciate your kind offers but I have needed one for awhile and will have to bite the bullet sometime , besides I've gotten a good offer on a used one .
And Jeff my Goodwife says I can't leave a trail of crumbs as they get caught up in my beard .
BD Amazon has the Oregon models starting around $200 , maybe the sale is over .
Thanks again guys I knew you would put me on the right track , Fred
'
Fred, are you going to be at Lambshead?
Keith
Keith I'm not sure where or what Lambshead is .
Fred, the Lambshead Ranch is the last of the weeks hunts. March 10 - 15. I will be at that one.
Keith
listening to this..
I have has a older one for years...doesn't pick up worth a darn in the woods...
My son and I both have Garmin the model might be 60csx, or something. It gets reception everywhere.
Don't get anything expensive or complicated unless you want to enter information with a crappy keyboard and havta' learn new
stuff.
At my age I'm not buying anything anymore that comes with a manual! LOL
A compass and dead reckoning. But if you get real lost I reckon. You will be dead. Lol.
Yes Fred the sale must be over. I bought mine around Christmas as a gift to myself. I got the 450. Looks like it's $189 now. I believe we met at Wensel's Bootcamp in Iowa last year. I hope you are well!
Brady
Keith I'll be going the second week to Marfa , wherever that is , good luck on your hunt .
Dan , I've gotten along fine with just a compass but based on the size of the ranch Barry recommends a GPS
Brady I'm holding up and it figures I am too late for the sale my luck , when my ship comes in I'll be at the airport . And yes we met at the bootcamp , hope you got to use some of the knowledge gained to have had a great season .
Good luck on Pig Gig Fred!! I'm going to have to shoot down through Toms River someday, to see if I can get some of that cinnamon bread your GREAT wife bakes!!!!!!
X2 for garmin etrex. I've used them for years and the most recent ones do have sensitive antennas.
Map and compass still work too.
