I believe it was "Hurley "
Mel Johnson's world record typical. Shot with an old Howatt recurve. Ya gotta love that!

That's right Hurley . I hope someone post a pic of Barry with Hurley.
Gene brought his bucks rack to Compton's one year. It is an awesome rack and gave me goose bumps when he let me pick it up. Greatest buck I have ever seen.
Here's Hurley he scored "190-1/8"" what awesome is how the wensels build a story with each and every big buck they close the deal on ...FIRSTCLASS in my book

Did I read recently that the beanfield buck was the largest with a bow and the third largest taken by any method? I think it was in an issue of Trad archers world.
Man I love big whitetails. I believe Mel's record still stands and as stated above is 3rd largest ever by any method. Almost 50 years ago too. Pretty awesome when you think of all the QDMA that goes on today. Great thread.

Here is the buck my Dad shot a few years back. The buck gross scored 191 7/8". The sticker points on the left G2 kept him from netting mid 180's. This was the highlight of my hunting career, even though I wasn't the one who shot it, being able to experience this with my Dad was priceless. It is something I will never forget.
Great Buck!
Those are some AWESOME deer, guys!
Bisch
Del Austin, World record non-typical for a long time aka "mossy horns", no longer the largest bow-kill of all time that is now held by Mike Baetty but his was not a trad bow-kill.
Beat me to it Buckeye, old mossy horns, think he score 279 something non-typical .

Yes sir 279, Del Shot him with a bear razorhead but I'm not certain of the make of his bow. It is a great story too. Those old stories are all great. If you guys are interested in stories of the Austin Buck, Mel Johnson buck and other similar I highly recommend "World Record Whitetails" by Gordon Whittington, it is exceptional.
I read it was an Oneida bow, 45 lbs. homemade cedar shafts
Between Roger Rothaar and the Wensel brothers it is hard to imagine the number of 160"+ class bucks they have taken and Ryan Rothaar is killing some fine bucks as well. Some awesome bucks by a lot of trad gangers too! Good job guys!!
This is a great thread ! Keep the monster pictures and stories coming !
3 years prior to mel Johnson killing the 204" bean field buck, loydd goad killed a 197" buck in Iowa with a recurve that held the crown of world record.
Here is Mr. Goads Iowa giant
