Title: Retro?
Post by: sveltri on January 26, 2014, 11:06:00 PM
So I've recently become very attracted to 50's style recurves and can't decide between a Maddog and RER.  Can somebody who's maybe shot both help me out.  I'm not totally stuck on these two, but their my front runners for now.

Thanks

you are in a tough spot. both of them are great bows. I have not shot a Maddog Retro, but I own a Maddog Prairie Predator, and it is a great bow. I also had Mike make my son a Pup, which he also did an excellent job on. you absolutely could not go wrong with one of his bows.

that said, my current go-to is an RER Retro I had custom made for me. I cannot say enough good things about it, and I've got some nice bows on the shelf waiting their turn.

good luck on your decision. you might want to visit RER's webpage and read the announcement that they are downsizing their production level this year. might make a difference in your decision.

I had an RER Retro. I bought it last year at the K'zoo Expo just because the woods really caught my eye and the grip felt SOOO good. Turns out it was a few pounds more than I should have had. Kevin was really good about giving me a generous trade-in toward the LXR I just got at this year's Trad Expo.

I'm very happy with my LXR and have the luxury of switching between the static tip curve limbs and the longbow limbs. Had the Retro been a few pounds lighter, I could have lived happily ever after with it.

Bottom bow in the pic. The Vital is above it and I found the slimmer grip of the Retro fit me much better. Perfect, in fact.

I can't speak for the RER never shot one, but I did post this a while back when someone else asked the question.....

Had one... Thought I wanted something different... Sold it... Really wish I had it back

Very Fast and super quiet, those static limbs made me a believer in the performance of a static recurve, did I mention it was fast? Did I also mention I wished I had it back? Guess I'll just have to start saving my pocket change and order another one

The one I had was Rock Maple, black glass and horn tips, it's a great looking setup.

Oh.... and by the way, still saving pocket change, haven't changed my mind on that one!

mine looks almost exactly like the one Ron had in this pic. i liked it so much i, uh, "emulated" the look of his. was worried about that 'til i found out he sold it, haha!

mine is Tigerwood and wenge, where i believe his had a different wood than wenge, but very similar appearance.

Just so everyone knows I don't call my 60 Recurve the Retro any longer since RER has a recurve called the retro.  It's now just the Maddog Recurve until I come up with something more creative.

Baby Boomer does have a catchy ring to it...maybe a limited edition for those of us over 60 with an "old dog in a rocking chair" medallion, eh
