Went for my annual hog hunt down in central florida and had a great time with my buddies. When i was getting dropped off for a evening hunt one of my friends grabbed the bag of corn and through out a handful with his hand. I told him not to touch the corn since the hogs might smell it. (the guide had warned me about this)
Well my friend kicked dirt over this handful with rubber boots and i could see where it was since there was a pile of dirt there now. Got into the stand and about an hour later the feeder went off. After a little while a nice 120lb boar came in and was eating up the corn. I was waiting for a meat hog but if this boar came closer to around 15 yards I would take him. The wind was steady in my face while i watched this boar feed closer and closer to the little pile of dirt where the hand touched corn was. Once he hit that pile he jumped straight up in the air and bolted full speed back into the swamp.
I just had to sit down and laugh for a bit. The guide sure was right about touching that corn.
Later on a nice 75lb sow came in and I shot her a bit forward but we found her piled up in a bedding area.

Similar occurrence...
I got in my stand in Dec and shot an arrow at a leaf to get a shot in to settle my distance meter (yeah, right...) and two fawns came in right by the arrow and were browsing. They never gave it a glance. Mom was behind them and was skittish. She came by the arrow, saw it, took two steps towards it to smell it, and all three were gone in a flash.
Live and learn.

It doesnt seem to bother the hogs where I am at.If it corn from a feeder or hand thrown.

I learned that the hard way a few years ago. I rolled a grapefruit I picked into a pile of corn to sweeten the set-up.
A nice brown boar came in, when he got to that grapefruit he almost turned inside out running out of there. I had him at five yards too:(
We remind all of our friends not to touch the corn with their hands now.

I guess the hogs around me don't know what I smell like or just don't care.

They can smell real good, if I could get air-dropped into a stand I would be cool with it :)
