Title: carbon spine suggestions
Post by: stickem1 on January 21, 2014, 07:08:00 PM
Hello all, I am wanting to try some footed carbons out of my longbow. Likely GT trads. My bow is a 68" Abbott 58@28 drawn to 29 with a 16 strand FF string. I have been shooting 70/75 doug firs that snag made for me, but I cringe every time I break one and this cold weather is hard on arrows. Thanks for the opinions and advice. I might even try some heavy aluminums.   :help:

I really like GT Trads, they are the only arrow I shoot now. At your draw length and poundage I would suggest the 5575. If I remember right, a 2216 is the size arrow you would need to foot the 5575. I foot my 1535 and 3555's with an inch long piece of 2117 and they are almost indestructible.

Another arrow to consider is the Heavy Hunter from Kustom King or 3 Rivers...probably 400 spine

Thanks. I was thinking that .340s might be a little stiff even with a lot of weight up front.

I would also recommend the GT Trad 5575. But I have found a 2216 too loose for footing. If you use a bronze brush inside the 2219 and lightly scuff the outside of the arrow you should have a perfect fit. Big Jim might have a few 5575 blems left, so get them while you can.

If your bow is not cut to center (not likely is due to design) you would be better off with the 5575's.

There is nothing wrong with the heavy hunter but the idea of putting all the weight in the shaft and not on the front of the shaft is counter productive. With trad equipment, weight up front is far superior!....and cheaper.

thanks, bigjim

Thanks for the advice, and I believe it is cut 1/16 before center. I'm going to give the 5575s a go!

You can buy test packs of different spines on 3 rivers to try... They send one of each spine.  You can then dial it in a order the dozen you need from that point.  It's allways nice to have the different spine arrows around to try with different setups... Just a thought...

Thanks Gary. I checked out your site, you make beautiful arrows. That said, I have a bunch of assorted sizes laying around for footing, and a few dozen feathers left so I'll probably just get some shafts.
Thanks again,
Andy
