Here lately I've been wanting to get back into woodies (arrows), and the last batch I had was a simple white crown with alternate yellow and black cresting by the nock and at the base of the the feather. Unfortunately without a good cresting machine I hand crested them and they looked O.K. But I wanted to do something that could be done by hand but looked awesome!
I've scoured the forum and saw a few posts on the marbled arrows and someone had posted about an idea with the sponge stippling design but no pictures. So I figured I'd give it a shot and here are my results.
Please note that these are the old arrow shafts stained with Dark Walnut stain and cut to 10" with a 7" crown with the stipple, without nocks. I simply cut and used my old Douglas Fir arrows which were broken.

and here is the same shaft fletched with corresponding black hen feathers and yellow barred lead feather.

I had an old sponge and cut the corners off and used the sponge to stipple the black on.
I measured and taped off the 7" crown, and then applied two coats of white Krylon primer, and then put a top coat of an acrylic white, and then on top of that did a full coat of the acrylic yellow (letting all layers dry an hour in between coats of course!). After the yellow top coat dried, I then stippled the black.
I am quite pleased with the results and I think I might try this on my next batch of woodies. I am not sure if I want to try a cresting, or if I may leave it plainly stippled.
What do you guys think? Oh and post some pictures of some unique designs that you have done (marbled, stippled, etc.) that you've done by hand.

Nice
also look at marble dip
easy and will give you some cool effects
Woodies are great
getting ready to order shafts so I can make some 2014 bushytail arrows
Theres a certain quality to wood that you just cant get from any other material.
Looks nice!
My first thought was "I hope that was just a test shaft or you're going to have a bear of a time tapering for the notch" but I see you stated they were old broken shafts.
Personally I prefer the crown and fletch to be bright colors so I can see them in the animal or scattered all behind the backstop. I made up some gray shafts with light and dark gray feathers and black nocks. Looked great but vanished as soon as I released and I didn't try that again. I still have a couple I use on small game and they are near impossible to find under leaf litter or grasses.
That looks great. Check out the "Woodie Love" thread, oh and be sure to wear a bib you will be drooling excessively.
Thanks guys, yeah I see what your saying Stumpkiller about the color being hard to spot. I had bought the cresting paint last year and have had it just hanging around, as well as some left over fletchings. I think I might still go with yellow and black as my B-50 strand string I made is yellow and black and my bow has some yellowish, and blackish colors.
I dunno, this was just an experiment to see what I could come up with that was unique, and also to make use of old broken arrows  My nocks will definitely be white and along with it I might add some white crestings. I'll cross that bridge when I get there!
Lpcjon2, I checked out the Woodie Love thread and saw some B-e-a-utiful arrows! Man you just can't beat a wood arrow! Which is why I wanna get back on that bandwagon, and also turn some heads myself with my own personal touch added to them! :archer:
looks great woodies are a lot of fun
I really like it. Always to see fresh designs.
