Title: Got the rasp out and...
Post by: Basinboy on January 19, 2014, 05:26:00 PM
Went to work on both my Zona recurves. Never liked the grip on them. Did a little to them a while back but wasn't enough. Now they feel comfortable in my hand. I'd file a while and shoot a few, then file until I got it where I wanted it.
My got to Zona before

Good job! I like the smaller grip. Whats the plan on finishing?

I like it Corey.  Much prefer a lower grip.

Nice!! The first stroke of the rasp is tough then it goes easy!!

I was nervous as heck when I first put the orbital sander to my Stalker riser. It turned out great though and is a much better fit in my hand!

Good work, Corey!

I had a predator I once wanted to do that to but was always too nervous too!

Rasping and sanding get easier once the original  finish is gone. Then you know you have to finish it.

Now, once again, what is the plan to refinish?

Looks great. I did a hatfield several years ago, it's that first stroke with the rasp that is the hardest

Plan is to steel wool it good and spray several coats of Deft Laquer

Now that you've bit off the rasping deal, maybe a good chance to learn the art of checkering?!?!?!
Just saying!
I admire your brass. Not sure I could make the leap. I for sure would have to buy something cheap and give it a go before putting it on my others.

Did the same to my bow... Took me months of thinking about it before I got up the nerve to do it. Looks like you did a nice job  :)

Looks good Corey.  Is that the same bow you killed the elk with this fall in CO with Tony?

Yes Sir Mr Billy. Same bow I've been using for all my trad kills. I've been reluctant to mess with it since it has been so good to me and it shoots well. But I don't like a high grip and couldn't help but think if I made the grip comfortable, I might shoot it even better!

I have a recurve that i alway's wanted to do this to. I like a smaller grip. Just can't muster up the nerve to do it.

Don't be sacred, after the first few strokes as the finish comes off it gets easier lol

If I had a choice on which one to pick up without shooting it first, it would be the one you reworked hands down.

Like what you did there.  Most folks (like me) would just sell or trade, but you shot the same bow for years, killed lots of stuff, and then fine tuned it to your liking.

I waited over two years for a custom recurve and when it finally came I couldn't believe the squarish blocky grip it had. I tried and tried to get used to it. I wasn't about to send it back.

After a year or so I was still PO'd about it and took the rasp to it. When you get mad enough you can really make the wood dust fly!

I went at it pretty good and took off that %$&#! square edge that was cutting into my palm. When the dust settled I had a perfectly fitting grip, just like I paid for in the beginning.

Now the bow and I have bonded pretty well. I shoot it better than any bow I ever touched!

Moral of the story...............it's your bow, go for it, make it fit. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I couldn't agree more. It's your bow do with it as you please. If it doesn't feel right don't be afraid to customize it.

Corey,

What type of tools did you use to remove the wood?  I have a project bow to do some light sanding too and don't need to remove a lot.

:knothead:

Boy does that bring back memories...

I had a bow by a son bowyer, then years later, one from his Dad, also a bowyer.  First one the grip shape bit me like others said... took a rasp to it, managed to get a film canister of analine dye to match, from the original bowyer and then redid the riser.

Years later, I tried the Dad. He wouldn't cut the riser to what I asked...so I rasped it to my desired center cut.

Deft to the rescue in both cases...couldn't find mat Deft locally, so I steel-wooled it to knock down the shine.

After I got them to where I was pleased, both being custom and both persons had hearing problems, or wouldn't do as agreed, I just up and sold the bow(s).  But not till I beat them at their own game.  My Money. My bow.

Finally found a bowyer who truly LISTENED and did all sorts of things to make sure they FITTED the bow to MY hand. Now I'm a happy happy boy!

I actually used a metal file. It only takes a little at a time. Then I sanded it smooth.
