Title: knife makers???
Post by: Jon Stewart on September 14, 2007, 05:33:00 PM
Just finished my sheath.  What kind of finish do you put on it? Do you buff it out? How do you finish the edge after you trim it?  And any other finish help would be appreciated.

I use Edgekote on all my sheath & leather work edges. For a finish on wet-formed sheaths I usually use hot beeswax/carnuba wax blend, worked into the hard leather. If I'm wanting something softer I brush on enough neatsfoot oil that the leather is saturated, but not dripping.

I used dye, then shoe polish, saddle soap, then pitch blend.  Just used neatsfoot oil for the first time on axe sheath and love it, really makes the leather look nice, but it does darken it up a bit.

i use dyelon fabric dye mixed with parafin oil paint it on the edge then get a bit of canvas and rub the crap out of it comes up real nice.to finish the edge i just rub bees wax on as it holds it all together.   on the sheath itself i just use neatsfoot oil.

I'll translate that into American....

dyeloe dye = Rit dye

Parafin oil = Kerosene

On the sheaths I make for my knives, I use neatsfoot oil and when it dries/soaks in. I then use mink oil and then polish it with a soft cloth.

I pass my knives on usually without a sheath    For me...making the sheath takes as long as making the knife  :knothead:  Doc
