The North American Longbow Safari is in Oregon this year, July 5 & 6 at HooDoo Ski Area (Their mailing address is Sisters, Oregon but it is up in the mountains just off Highway 126/US Route 20.)

I will send try to get some more information, and post it here as I can. This is a link from a while back (2009), but my guess is it will be largely the same (We are a traditional bunch :-)
The last time I was able to attend the North American Longbow Safari was 2006, so I don't trust my memory really well. That said, I think it was wood arrows, broadheads, and a longbow was a bow that the string didn't touch the limbs when it left the string nock, 50 targets Saturday, 50 on Sunday........ P.S. don't quote me, I am not an official, nor do I play one on television :-).

Some info from the NALS 2009 (http://www.taoregon.com/ppm/nals.html)
The NALS is all longbows with wood arrows with 2 blade broadheads. The 3-D shoot is part North American targets and part African targets. Some where around 50-60 targets and then there is a running deer target and the bow birds. The bow birds are flu-flu arrows and they can be field points, but all other are broadheads and wood arrows.
The wood arrows part kind of rules me out! I just can't figure those things out!

As this is a gathering of longbow enthusiasts we ask tht you refrain from bringing bows other than longbows to the site.
The minimum draw weight allowed is 40 pounds at the archer's draw length. The North American Longbow Safari is designed for those archers capable of handling hunting weight equipment in rugged hunting conditions. Only those shooters meeting these criteria will be allowed to participate.
Arrows must be of constructed of wood shafting and feather fletching.
Preferrably 2 bladed broadheads should be used for the 3D shoot and running animals, as they cause less damage to the targets. Target points are required on all flu-flus for bow bird shooting.
The only problem i see here is the draw weight requirement is going to eliminate a lot of the younger boys & girls. I wonder if lower poundage bows are OK if you are not entering the competition?
Can shrew type bows be used?

No scoring. Just a fun shoot.
If you want bring your family, they can stay in my house and enjoy Bend while we shoot. 45 minutes from the shoot.

There are usually 30 targets each day (Sat & Sun), shot in the morning. Novelty shoots are held Saturday afternoon (running deer, bow birds, sometimes a long shot of up to 180 yards). Closing ceremonies held on Sunday afternoon. Usually a good collection of vendors too.

"Traditional or reverse handles" are they implying that only straight, "Hill style" grips are allowed?
"Center shot..." does this include cut to center or just cut past center?
I'm trying to figure out if a Toelke Whip with locator grip is allowed or not because it kind of sounds like it doesn't meet the requirements. I don't want to find out after registering and getting there....

Kids shoot and believe me they aren't shooting 40#.
Bring what ever longbow, wooden arrows, and broadheads you have and enjoy yourself.

I asked Dan Toelke if a Whip qualified, and he said it did. Of course, Dan is not running the tournament, but he is aware of other Whip users who have shot in this tournament using one.
sound like a place for Flatliners and Frontier 66s to me. I am going to this one if I can. I have wanted to join TAO for a long time anyway and that country is some of the most beautiful country in the world.

As been said it is relaxed. Fun. Kids shoot. The event is not a tournament per se. Score cards are used, but not all turn them in

A Whip is cut just shy of center so by definition it qualifies.

Wow, I have planned to be in Oregon the week of the 7th to visit family before driving an old truck up to Montana to see my sister the following weekend. Maybe I'll make I sure I show up early enough to attend this, it'd be awesome to finally have it work out so conveniently!!
Yup, I have a feeling this is going to be a good one...... Of course I live here, so I may be a bit biased :-) Starting on my longbow technique already. Planning on using a longbow to hunt with this year also.

I didnt see Kirk and others questions answered completely.If they were then disregard,But....
Locator handles and the likes are allowed.What they dont want,is massive risered bows,such as most 3 piece longbows.I have seen some pretty curly limbs and grips there,just dont let the string touch the limbs.Ive never seen anyone checking draw weight,so i dont think they worry bout that much.Ive even seen a few carbon arrows,at past events,but as they say,this event is for traditional style longbow and wood arrow enthusiast.Lets respect what this shoot is about.If you dont agree with the rules,thats fine,there are plenty of other shoots that you can use other style equipment at.This is a fun shoot that is in place to keep old traditions alive and it is a once a year,unique event.
