Title: South Florida Hog Odyssey
Post by: tarponnut on January 17, 2014, 08:20:00 AM
Bill Langer and his son Benjamin(age 11)are visiting us for Bill's annual Florida hog hunt/filming tour.
They arrived in West Palm Beach yesterday and drove straight to the property to meet up with guide/partner Irv Eichorst.
The wind was right for the Woods stand, so off they went with the idea that Bill would film and Ben would shoot. I had hung a stand above the ladder stand for filming.
After a short wait the feeder went off and a corn robbing raccoon made its way in. Ben's aim was true and there is now one less masked bandit about.
Thirty minutes later Bill hears some grunting and squeals coming from the North.
Bill whispers, "Ben, stand up slowly and get ready..."

I should point out that Ben, although young,is addicted to the outdoors. Shoots his bow every day and has been practicing for this hunt for months. Bill said he's been drilling his 3-D target at 20 yards. This is his first hog hunt though, and you never know what can happen to nerves when the swine show up at close range.
More to come...(the story of TWO bloody arrows)

Bill started his camera rolling as the group of four 50#ish pigs showed up at the feeder.Ben got turned so he'd be ready when a pig gave him a good angle. Bill had poured a small bag of corn under the feeder and the pigs went right to it.

The problem was they were all facing Ben, offering no shot angle whatsoever. Finally a two toned brown and white boar got turned and quartered away....

First off Ben and I want to thank Jim and Irv of True South Adventures for another great hunt. I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Jim and Irv before I was a client. The honesty and genuine qualities that make them sound friends shine in their outfitting abilities. Having hunted all over Florida for free range wild hogs, their land is as good or better than any I've hunted. Ben and I hunted 7 different times over the last 4 days and not only saw hogs but had shots on every hunt.

That first night a brown and white hog in the group of 4 got a little more greedy and wiggled his way broadside and Ben made quick work to send an arrow perfectly home, I could not believe it. Although he has practiced every day for months, it still amazes me when an arrow is so expertly placed.

As we watch the first one go down and the woods goes silent again...Ben and I are shocked to see the 3 healthy pigs coming back in!
I hand Ben another arrow and he does it again on a mostly white colored rooter....2 pigs....in 2 minutes....with 2 arrows!!!
Both perfect shots!!!!!

The young man hunts well beyond his years. Of course bias blinders can often fog a parents view of a child, but in Bens case most all who meet him comment on his natural ability as a woodsman, hunter and archer. Perfect double lung hits on the first 2 big game arrows ever released by an 11yr old, with a 40lb longbow speaks for itself...period.
HOWEVER....most bowhunters have that one game species that is their nemesis...... For Ben it's the old masked bandit!
He managed to kill 2 coons on this trip.....BUT the quiver was emptied many times in doing so. In fact, as I tried not to laugh from behind the camera, Ben turned and asked more than once, "Dad you can edit some of these out...can't you??"
One of the best hunts I have been on in my life!
Jim is going to post some pics later. Ben and I need to catch a plane, more later, thanks for tuning in, TAKE A KID BOWHUNTING!!!!!

We are back home at a real computer, my eyes, fingers, and brain are not conducive to smart phone use.
As previously stated Bill had hung a stand next to the ladder stand for filming. Here is a still shot he took of Ben.  (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/image6.jpeg) (http://s301.photobucket.com/user/tarponnut/media/image6.jpeg.html)

Thanks Bill for the kind words.I have to echo Bill's spot-on description of his son. This kid was born to hunt. So much of his ability is innate but it doesn't hurt to have been raised by a dad and grand dad that are both expert hunters. Here are a couple of photos of Ben and his pigs.

Friday night Bill and Ben went to another property Irv and I have. On the way out they spotted a pig that was out rooting up the grass lane we park on.
Ben made another deadly shot, although not perfect arrow placement, the pig only went thirty yards and went down.
Last night was their last evening hunt so they decided to sit awhile after last light.
I will let Bill relate those events(that end with a squealing sus scrofa)!Pics to come.....

My son Nicolas and I sat a ground blind at the East Grove feeder. I really wanted to do some raccoon control. We didn't see any masked bandits but some field mice and a couple rabbits showed up. Nicky had fun flinging arrows at both(warning shots as it turned out).

On Sunday evening the last night of our hunt, Ben and I hunted Jim and Irvs new property.

The weather had started to warm up and the wind had shifted from the north to a more north west breeze. Perfect for a stand I had tweeked for both of us to sit on the south side of a feeder the hogs were hammering! Ben and I had decided before the hunt that any hog over 60lbs would be fair game for Dad and the old Blackwidow, given the limitations of Bens equipment.

We were set up by 3:30, feeder went off at 4:50.
A swarm of mosquitos and 7 raccoons started at about 5:30. Ben sat patiently, taking on the biting insects (no thermocell or bug repellent) and holding back on drilling a coon, so that we might get one last chance on a hog...

2 hours after dark Ben sat motionless, except to carefully crush the dozens of bugs biting any exposed skin. Every once in a while we would hear a distant squeal from hogs battling over the best rooting position in the pastures and broken brush that surrounded us. Ben still holding off on the 7 coons feeding in front of us in the red light of our hog hunting lights.

Ben never complained or asked to leave, he just stared and listened into the darkness...
Then they came, just as I told Ben they would (thank goodness)if we just held on. A large sounder, that Ben would later describe as what sounded like a herd of bulls. Pounding the brush and splashing the water as they came.

A dozen or so hogs, all 80lbs plus, boiled under the feeder as battles erupted for the best feeding position. At one point a large boar in the 200lb range, bit the side of a smaller hog, driving it into the ground and out of its way.

I glanced down at Ben who was still seated, knowing these pigs were out of his weight class.
At that point a calico colored hog went broadside, I hit anchor and let fly...the woodsman drove sharp behind its shoulder the glowing nock marking its path as the hog went just 30 yards piling up in a fit of squeals on camera. The remaining hogs blew out and the Florida night went silent. Ben and I quietly celebrated.

We had an amazing meal Saturday evening at the campground restaurant. On a previous trip, the cook asked what we were hunting, I told him wild boar. He said he'd be glad to cook it for us on our next trip if we're successful.
So while Bill and Ben were hunting, Nicky and I took him up on it and brought over the two (now quartered) pigs Ben had shot the first evening.
Chef Ty outdid himself! Baked wild pork served over a bed of red cabbage surrounded by baked apples. The meat was falling off the bone and delicious.  (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/dinner2.jpeg) (http://s301.photobucket.com/user/tarponnut/media/dinner2.jpeg.html)

As I got on the road after our hunt Bill texted me that he had a nice hog down. We quickly made our way to the property just in time to help film the recovery. It wasn't a long track at all, maybe 30 yards? The spotted boar had a really neat coat and was probably 75-80 lbs.

Thought I better chime in lest you guys think me a slacker.
When Bill called with Ben's two hogs down, I headed from the campground to the lease to assist in tracking.
I got there in time to take pictures. Not much tracking is necessary when you hit them as well as Ben did.
What a fine young man...very excited and happy...very polite and courteous as well.
He longed to skin and quarter his harvest all by himself, but Dad, knowing they were tired and hungry took charge and Ben manipulated the hogs into easily skinned positions as directed while I held the light and meat bag. The team was finished in no time and thebuzzards were happy to make shot work of the remains.
As Jim mentioned, the campground chef prepared us a wild hog dinner fit for kings with one of the hogs.
I had mentioned to Bill that I had brought my new smoker with me thus year and offered to try the second hog with a favorite rub of mine.
Just before the guys left for the airport on Monday, we were able to consume Ben's second harvest with some baked potatos for lunch.
Everyone thought it turned out well too.
It was a great trip. We always enjoy Bills visits and he is always successful.
Our hats off to young Ben. It always makes us smile to see clients take some meat, have a fun and safe trip, especially when the youth are involved.
Many thanks to all of you listening in...I hope to meet you all on a future outing.
