Title: Modified Grizzly per Dr. Ahsby
Post by: Tom Krein on September 14, 2007, 04:31:00 PM
Here is a modified 190 Grain Grizzly.  I based my modifications on Dr. Ed Ashby's post on how to modify them.

It is 1" at the base and full width at the front.  I put a chisel tip on it.  The tip bevels are ground on the opposite side of the blade grinds.

I also decreased the edge angle and took it to a zero grind and then buffed the wire edge off.  It will now easily shave arm hair!!

Dr. Ashby please let me know what you think and if I did it correctly.  I look forward to your input!

Here is a picture of the modified broadhead and an unmodified broadhead.

Here is a picture of one of my knives and a modified Grizzly.

Thanks for looking!  I look forward to your input on this.

Ian, thats me....  Thanks!  Glad you are enjoying the Dogfish!  They are a fun little necker.

If Dr. Ashby gives his blessings, I may try and modify these heads if there is demand for them.

I will have to see how much time it takes, but I don't think it will be too bad.

I have to say that I was VERY surprised when I got the Grizzly's.  The tips are BLUNT and the edges wouldn't cut hot butter!

Tom , I am demanding a Dozen of your modified grizzlies. Ok, perhaps Demand is too harsh a word, but I bet there would be a great demand for this modification. However, I would like to put my name in the hat for a Dozen or so of your Ashby/Krien modified Grizzlies, should you start this endevour. Your neighbor in Tejas, Suty

Tom,
I've got one of your Mid-Tech Dogfish knives and put me in for some modified heads as well.  I like the knife above.  Guess I'll be ordering something else from you, as well as the heads.

Let me see on the next one I modify.  I can do it, but it might make the front to narrow...  maybe leave the very front double edged and turn into the chisel grind??

Tom,
GREAT job on the modified head. Also, great looking knives. Put my name in the hat if you need field testing done too! Just curious, what did the grizzly weigh after mod.?
Thanks

Terry (aka ozarkcherrybow1) came by the shop today and we modified his 160 gr Grizzly's.  They are not quiet as narrow as the 190's, but I bet they will work.

I will call Grizzly tomorrow and see if I can buy the heads direct and in bulk.  I will also see if I can buy them unsharpened for you guys that like the left wing fletching.

Will let you know what I find out tomorrow.

Well, it looks like this is going to work!

I have a dozen unground 190 grain Grizzly's in route.  Not sure how they are going to work ground on the other side do to the way they are manufactured though.  I will be happy to try if some of you Left wing guys want.

I also have 2 dozen more coming so I can get the right wing guys taken care of.

I can't wait to try out these "160's" that Tom modified for me. They are actually right at 145 which is what I was hoping for. I'll tell you guys this, Tom puts a scary sharp edge on them. When I got home with them, I started making sheaths for them so they won't cut my quiver all to pieces.
I was able to see his knives first hand, and the man does some very fine work. I was extremely impressed. He knows his stuff when it comes to working metal into cutting instruments. He even had me bring all my hunting knives with me and made them all shaving sharp.
I should mention that Tom also has a nice start on his Trad bow collection too!
Thanks Tom, for all that sharpening. Looking forward to a little shooting and making some cane in the future....Terry

Guys will let you all know as soon as they get here and are reworked.  Hopefully first of next week.  Just depends on the post office.

Terry, it was great to have you stop by!  Had a great time talking cane arrows, stone points, self bows, broad heads, and knives.  Wish more of you guys lived closer!

If any of you are in the area (NW Arkansas) passing through, please feel free to stop by.
