Title: Best bow you ever owned & what happened to it
Post by: BAK on January 13, 2014, 12:12:00 PM
What do you to consider the best bow you ever owned, and what happened to it?

Mine was an original OL Adcock ACS/CX that lasted 6 years, then just blew.  I've tried the new ones but they're not in the same league that one was.

My best is my Legends Cyclone. smooth, quiet, quick, and hits where I aim. Workmanship is great, and the rosewood/bocote/myrtle combo is easy on the eyes. It's stil mine, and isn't going anywhere.

I had a 15" Bob Lee riser and a set of longbow limbs I bought used.It was the best shooting bow I ever used.It blew this past summer and I had Bob Lee make a new pair .They turned out a different width and profile and no longer balanced or shot or looked like a Hybred they  looked like a recurve limb.My best bow totally does not fit me now and has no soul.Kip

Mine would have to be my L/H SA2 Black Widow had it since 2000 and killed a lot of game with it. Killed 3 deer this year with it.

The 2nd best would be my Martin Mamba That thing has took a beating for 15 years of bow fishing. Bounced around in the boat and out of the boat and into the Mississippi River twice. It is covered with Carp eggs from years of use.

I bought a Ma Greybark Widow at the Whittingham shoot in New Jersey. It was 62" 51# @ 29" and made in the early 90's. I paid $375 in 2007, shot and hunted with it for about 5 years. Took it on my first bear hunt.......I shot it well. Then in a moment of stupidity......I sold it to buy something else.   :banghead:  What a dumb A$$   :dunno:

The best bow is a Black Widow MAII Graybark 60# @ 28".  It was a Christmas present from my wife in  1991.  I still shoot it and shoot it very well.  The one that I covet is my Jack Howard Gamemaster 60# at 28" that I bought new from Jack in 1967 and it isn't going anywhere.

I traded for a Martin Hunter last year. I really thought no big deal. I will shoot it some and sell it to one of my buddies for a starter bow.  I was wrong. The selfbow bug has bit me recently but that Hunter stays and will get woods time from here on out.

The best bow I ever owned is my Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow. I told Bob a while back he screwed up by making me that bow. I was buying at least a bow a year from him until I bought that one and have not bought another since. It has taken more critters than all the other bows I have ever owned, I think! It will be mine till it breaks and if it does not, they will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!

1966 52# Browning Explorer.

Been hanging on my rack since the deer season before last; when she honored herself with a nice eight-point.

I may be pulling her out for a 3-D shoot this weekend.  Quiet, fast and good looking (to me) in solid rosewood or sheuda(?) and she puts them where I'm looking.

Not sure it was the best bow I've owned but I sure did like it.  It was a low end longbow, Viper Deluxe.  I donated it to the troops so they could have an archery range on their base.  As far as I know it's in Iraq still....

I have had 3 favorites that have been especially significant to me. Two are Hill bows, a Wesley Special and a Cheetah, that I still have. The other was a Bamboo Longhunter, which I shot better than any bow I have ever had. Unfortunately, I stupidly traded it away a long time ago.

The best bow I've owned was an older Bob Lee Hunter. 19" riser 55# plain jane but solid as a rock and silky smooth. Sold it to try something else better looking and different style. 3 bows later I still regret it. Take it from me if you have a bow that feels good, put it away! Buy and sell all you want but don't make my mistake. Now I have to save up and get another Lee.

Maybe not the best, but the best looking bow as far as ornate wood I had was a 1963 Bear Tamerlane I bought new in January of that year.  It was in the trunk of my 1957 Ford when the car was totaled three years later. Don't have a use for a target only type bow now, but I wished I had it back.

I still own the best bow I ever had. It is a Jack Harrison El Lobo.

I have 5 that I wish I never sold.

One is a Hill longbow owned by Bob Wesley and reworked by John Schulz to Howard Hill's specs. A Ol Adcock 64" 61# @ 28' one piece. A NM Shelton, a Dick Boss one piece and a Hill Tembow made by John Schulz.

I could have been happy with any of those bows as my only bow. Now I don't have the bows or the money. Wish I had the bows.

Not sure if it was the "best bow I ever owned" but it's certainly one of the best.

Morrison Dakota 1-pc 60" MAO 56# @ 28".  Sent it to Bob to have it refinished.  When the USPS returned it to me, I was shocked to see what good shape the box was in (yes, I said "good" condition).  Then I opened the box.

The USPS managed to bend it perpendicular to the "recommended plane of deflection" and they split it right down the center of the riser.

The best bow I've ever owned is still hanging on my bow rack downstairs (when it's not with me in my tree stand). It will be mine as long as I'm on top of the grass instead of under it. It's my Kanati. It is smooth, quiet, and puts an arrow where I point it. She looks pretty sweet too!

I have owned a lot of bows and just like to shoot them and see what I like. It is really hard to answer the question of what I like BEST because there are so many good ones. Have started thinning the herd due to an injury.

Sold and regret: Griffin 60" longbow, Kanati 60" longbow.

Best recurve and I still have it and don't plan on selling it: Talltines 62" long riser with medium limbs, low grip with checkering.

Best short bow: Hill Country Bobcat 56" and I have owned several short bows.

Don't know about "best" but it was a favorite bow.. My Predator Classic, 56# at 28.  I would still have it today, but I changed to lefty.  I have another great bow now, in lefty, and I am also trying to change and NOT have 25 bows laying around, so I have not yet reaquired a Predator (lefty) bow.

Leon Stewart 3pc Slammer 68" 55@29.  The 'Queen'.  No.1.  Does everything a hunting bow is supposed to.  Tied with my Centaur Triple Carbon, the 'King', 62" 56@28 (~58@29) which is awesome for its own reasons.  Got my long and my short out of those two.  My third favorite longbow would be Toelke Whip 64" 48@28 (~51@29).  I am privileged to have all three.  Do regret selling a good few but none were bows I couldn't part with.

The best bow I've ever owned is the one I presently own.  It's a Morrison Cheyenne, B Leadwood Riser, D Max 1 carbon/foam limbs, 62"and 45#@28".  I'm getting long in the tooth and my retirement income doesn't afford me the amount of fun money I had when I was working, so this will be my last bow.  At least it will be unless I find a way of selling the Max 1 limbs and buy a set of Bob's new Max 2 limbs when he gets back into production!  :)

Best shooting RH bow for me back when I shot righty was my Kohannah Kurve. I love the Hill style bows, but that was the easiest shooter I had.

Now that I've joined the dark side, I only own 1 bow anymore. It's ugly. It's cheap (ish). I hate to love it, but my Hoyt Excel with bmax carbon limbs is what I shoot. I trust it more than any bow I have ever owned or shot.

I bought a BW LAG longbow, 64" 58# @29", in the spring of 1993.  Shot the bow 13 years.  When not in use, I always hung it on a set of moose antlers.  Came home one day and found the antlers, and bow on the floor.  Checked the bow, but couldn't see any damage, but the next 3d round I shot the bow delaminated.  Apparently the brow tine of the antler hit the lower limb of the bow, when they fell, and loosened the glue.

Since 1969...many bows have been held. Some I regret selling, others...were just bows. A quick answer though, my best bows are ones I hunt with now.

Best T/D Recurve: Kempf Stealth
Best Longbow: Kempf Trophy Hunter
Best One Piece: Fedora H560

I still have and will never part with my one piece Groves Spitfire and Bill Stewart Multi Cam T/D.

I regret selling my beautiful Howard Gamemaster Jet. When I learned Rocky Miller was leaving the business, I sold my Heritage and Predator T/D bows. Also when Rick Lepp bowed out, I sold my Summitt T/D. All the above were excellent bows that shot smooth, fast and pointable.

Bows I sold and don't miss...Bear Cub,Browning Nomad,Kittredge T/D, Kittredge One piece recurve(both built by Martin), Archery 2000 SST and GN Bushbow.

Subjective question....I've owned a lot of bows that I'm sure are great bows in someone elses hand....but for that reason no longer have them in my possession.

The one I shoot best and performs as well as any I've owned....I still have it...

Groves spitfire 1 piece 50@28

Two are at the top for me, I still have both of them, Holm-made River Runner and a Martin Hunter.  I shoot the River Runner everyday.

Sadly, the Hunter sits on the rack for nostalgia's sake because one of the limbs has delaminated.

Best bows I've owned are a tie between my three Mike Baker aka Bodork from Canyon Archery Traditions bows. The Jaguar is by far the prettiest work of art and shoots smoothly and the Cougar feels the best in my hand of any bow I've shot and rivals the feel with exceptional performance and then my Maximus bow is beautiful and my go to hunting bow.....

And they aren't going anywhere, EVER!

My custom Silvertips made for me by Dave. Still have them and will never part with them. Got a new one coming in a few months and it will never leave either.

Did sell a Brack Quest all zebrawood with a gaboon stripe I wish I still had, killed a lot of critters with that bow.

The best bow I have ever had is my Bama Bow Hunter.  It's my first takedown longbow and I love it.  It lives on my bow rack.

The one in my signature. I've shot the crap out of it for years and plan to continue to do so unless I find a two piece that shoots any better. After trying a couple hundred bows, I've yet to find one to replace my Sierra. There was one that I felt shot as good, but not better so it got sold because I couldn't give up my trust rig for no gains in shooting performance and feels

Marriah Thermal. I want to shoot them all, and sold it so I could try something else.

If it's bows we still have, it would be an old grey Martin Mamba. Shot lots of 3D, and deer with it using fastflight strings it isn't rated for. I have retired it with honor.

Great news!  I just found a longbow like the one I donated, used, and 5 lbs. heavier.  How cool is that!?  Can't wait to get my hands on it!
