Ithaca has extended its deer season in an effort to control the deer population, a link can be found on the D.E.C. website. myself and 5 others will be going for 2 different weekends. 2 deer a day limit per person and more info on the DEC link. time to dust off the long bow!!!!! will run the month of January.
I'm originally from that area Ken. Good luck and watch out for the tree huggers, the place is crawling with them. Cayuga Heights is where the deer are most overpopulated, but the residents as a whole, aren't exactly country folks. If you know what I mean. Hope you get lot's of deer.
Sent PM
we will be hunting in one or both of the parks as i do not have a place to hunt private land.
Good Luck. Shoot straight
Practice what you will do as a reaction if a tree hugger gets nasty. Don't worry about it, prolly won't happen, just be ready to be the good guy and let them look like jerks.
ChuckC
You shouldn't have a problem Ken if your hunting in the parks. Just a lot of libs around Cornell university area and the city of Ithaca. Have a great time.
My stompin grounds :)
Good luck! A co-worker mentioned this to me but I have too much going on this time of year (end).
Good Luck ken.
Hey Ken give me a shout or PM. Can't hunt Cornell properties unless you obtained a permit prior to the season. So we are limited to either private land or the state parks. Cayuga Heights is a prime focal point, but the locals don't want them put in a freezer, they want them to be spayed and or neutered. Then kissed and sent on there way.
will do Lee, looks like a very big group of us now maybe 7-10. i have NEVER run in to a tree hugger while hunting yet and i am the nicest one of the bunch that will be hunting if that tells you anything......
I like to hug my deer right after I tag them :bigsmyl:
I am all set to go, weather will determine which weekend. Probably @ Treman.
This is my daughter's first year at Ithaca college.
She's into film making and has photography classes. All the other students are taking pictures of man made structures and waterfalls.
My daughter...deer!
She said the place is crawling with them.
Good luck Ken!

Hope you guys don't have to deal with any of that crap. I would be in before light n out after dark. Most confrontation would be at the parking areas I suppose?
Good luck everybody. Keep us posted on how you do.
ok now is there anyone i can call on the phone to give me a little more help with area, exactly where to hunt in the parks ect??? also sounds like a few Tradgangers are going there to hunt, maybe we could all hookup for a day and hunt??
Ken, Call 607 273 3440 that's the number for Robert Treman State Park. This office operates both Buttermilk Falls and Treman. They are very helpful. Sent you a PM with my cell number and home phone. I'm off to work at 2:30 so cell is better after 2:30.
Lee
Lee than you my friend, will be in touch a little later!
Guys I literally live across the road from Treman. Hint Hint ;)
Looks like Nick is the guy to talk to!
All I can you boys from the Big Woods are in for a treat! You should have plenty of sightings. This time of year Hemlocks and other pines are king. My private land is boarded by Treman Park land along with a few various land owners. One is my cousins property (500 Acres). I still got stands up and just got my tags this afternoon!
Good luck! Keep us posted. My weekends are tied up until after February or I would be down there with ya'll!
Nick, pm sent.
Man I wish I was closer!! I'd be more than happy to help thin the herd :goldtooth:
yeah buddy coming together now with help from Lee and Nick!!!!!!
Gotta help my fellow Trad Gangers!
"Within the 60,000 acre Central Tompkins
County Deer Management Focus Area
registered hunters will be allowed to take two
antlerless deer per day, in addition to any deer
taken on tags acquired through normal licensing
procedures, during the bowhunting, regular, and
late muzzleloader seasons, and during an
additional season in January."
Does this mean you can use a buck tag that you didn't fill in gun season ?
or your late season either or tag for bow?
Thats been used but if I read this right I should be able to use my gun season buck tag since it's valid for gun season or late archery/muzzleloader and it sounds like this extended season.
Bob I believe your gun season buck tag is expired. I would be careful and sure before entering the woods. I've spent some researching this too but I'm not going and I could be wrong. Good luck and keep us posted.
Should be a neat hunt. Ive told adkmountainken he can camp right on my property along with the other guys. I figured it would save everyone some money by not renting a room plus im right next to the hunting ground and 4 miles away from the main town. Plus it will be unique experence this will be the first time EVER ive hunted with fellow Trad Bowhunters. Im looking foreword to meeting everyone and hopefully make some new Bowhunting friends!
That is the way to step it up 2blade! Very generous offer
wait to ya get a load of the hillbilly's i'm bringing, straight out of the mountains! looks like fellow Tradgang members Bowspirit and Adirondackman will be joining me!
your hospitality is greatly appreciated my friend!
Hey man its not a problem at all :wavey: . Were a bunch of hillbilly's too so that should work out fine! :biglaugh:
I wish I caught wind of this sooner, I would be all over this hunt!
That area is my favorite within NY state. It most certainly is very beautiful and screams deer when you drive through.
Bob, I think the hunt is for antlerless deer?
2Blade your PM box is full.
Try now Lee. My bad :knothead:
Hey Ken and Two blade, I can't make it over there this weekend, but let me know when else your going to be in Ithaca and I'll come hunt with you guys for a day or two. I have a good friend that lives in Newfield and I could stay with him for a two day hunt with you fellas........if you'll have me :) I'm always up for a hunt with my Trad Gang buddies. :bigsmyl:
David would love to hunt with ya man! are you sure ya can't make it this weekend?
Dave ill see how the Meet And Greet goes...They will probably think im a weirdo because I shoot with a Clicker :bigsmyl:
Ken can't pull it back far enough to make a clicker go off....... :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
May not have a 29" draw like me?
Ken, as a mater of fact, I can make it over Sunday. I have the WNY Bunnie Bash Sat. with Longrifle, stone knife, nosaba, drew , sockrsblur, ect. We will be trying to shoot some Rabits, as Elmer Fudd would say.
I know the Ithaca area very well, I grew up 10 miles up Cayuga lake in Trumansburg, and lived in the Ithaca area untill I was in my late 30's. I haven't read the laws governing this extended hunt, but I have A DMP tag for R7 and an either sex tag for bow/muzzle. If we can hunt buttermilk, thats a good thing........ if not too many are hunting it. It's quite a bit bigger than Treman as far as hunting land go's. If I don't use my DMP tag, I'll sign it over to one of you guys.I only would want one more deer in my freezer. No need to waist a good tag!
Hey Ken Now that you mention it would you happen to have a couple open palm shooting gloves similar to the Neet Gloves? Id be willing to trade if youed like. I got two Homemade tabs im willing to trade as well as 2 Damascus shooting gloves. I just favor open palm design id be all set except my other Neet glove the leather is cut wrong. I got Broadheads im willing to trade also so just lettin you know :)
This hunt should be a blast! I just hope there will be many photos! From practicing to enjoying camp and a deer kill with everyone!
2Blade, how well do you know Treman? I used to fish the stream and have walked the gorge, but have never hunted it or Buttermilk for that matter. Are those the only parks open to bow?
I know the portion around my house somewhat as I dont hunt public that much but I know some. My Uncle who everyone will meet is weatlth of knowdledge as hes killed many deer on the Park Land. From what I understand Buttermilk is open to hunting as well. However I know 0 about Buttermilk
The friend I mentioned earlier and I counted over 70 deer in a field one night back in the late 80's or early 90's. That field, bordered Buttermilk state park land. That area is still good hunting. Tompkins county is a sleeper for giant bucks as well. Some big big bucks have been harvested from Buttermilk over the years too. I used to pass those fields every day on my way to work. It was tough to get access to the park back then.
Dave we plan on pulling out around 12 noon or so on Sunday, can ya get there in the morning to hunt? i am using this first trip as "deer recon" and just getting my feet wet to learn the area a bit. i'll do pretty much anything to extend my deer hunting season!
Not sure Ken, but I'll set you up with the best info I can. If I can't make it Sunday, I'll PM you with directions to a good area.
Seeing as there is so many deer out there, please shoot one for me. ;)
Charlie any way you can join us? room in the camper for ya!
Lee I think your right but it's confusing if you read the quote I posted that is off the map of the area with the special season. It states two antler less deer in addition to any tags you have with your license. Maybe unused buck tags are good for does ?
they let you print of as many tags as you want when you go on the website, i printed 10 as that is what came of when printed.
I can do Sunday, Saturday just got ate up by my job. Hope there is room?
Let us know how you do. I was thinking about going down but this month is getting very busy for me.
I drove through ithaca and the finger lakes this past weekend. Some beautiful woods up there. Beautiful pine thickets that would be a haven for lateseason deer in my area of SE PA. I now have access to 10 acres in Penn Yan. Will be up next year. Good luck everyone. I want to see some success pics!!!!
2Blade & Ken - I checked out the DEC site and it looks interesting for certain. I wish I'd done more scouting/research (we keep our sailboat in Lansing).
What time are you heading afield on Sunday? And do you mind a clunky, clutzy tag along? If you're primarily on a scout/reconnoiter I'm all for that.
after checking the weekend weather forecast i might think again and make it the following weekend. %70 chance of rain sat does not seem pleasant with 5 guys in a camper, will mull it over with the crew.
I just changed my plan, postponed a week same reason--rain!
Keep me posted I live 20 miles from Ithaca but try to stay as far away as possible. This could be a valuable reason to go to Ithaca.
man there is a loot of interest. i believe myself and my biddies will be staying at a local hotel now as it looks like 4-6 going with me and another 3 or 4 meeting me to hunt. hope to drive from hotel to Blades hous and proceed to hunt from there. would be nice if we could organize and rent 3 or 4 rooms?
Holy moly thats alot of hunters! Just remember guys your sharing a small area with other hunters as well.
i believe some will be hunting ButterMilk as well and the few that are coming with me will not all be there at the same time but on different days Sat and Sun.
2Blades I have a glove like what your looking for it's an open palm skookum. I have 2 but at the moment can only find 1.
Lee
Got a pic? What size? I got 2 Damascus gloves and 2 homemade Tabs
I'll look tomorrow.
2Blades, I sent pic's and size to your email address listed in your profile.
Lee
Back at ya Lee!
TTT
Did anyone take advantage of this?
Rick
Not yet. Weather does not cooperate with travel plans
Good Luck everyone!
Any updates?
I'm chomping at the bit here. Can't wait to hear details. My daughter left Massachusetts today to head back to school at Ithaca.
She's going to give me her trip deer sightings when she gets there tonight.
Love to hear if anyone went and did this--the coming weekend does not look hospitable at all, cold and windy.
Still wondering if anybody went--reports?
:dunno: :dunno:
What happened to the big plans, how did you guy's make out? :dunno:
Looking forward to the update
Ive been trying to reply to this for awhile but my computer wont post? Try again. We got rained off first weekend and there was alot of interest. Ended up being quite a few of them and they were gonna stay in a Hotel just to not over crowd things. Havent heard anything hope all is ok? Weve been in biter cold for awhile now so my hunting has been limited.
I backed out graciously when I saw the response. 2Blade is generous but it is his territory.
I got my deer by "other means" louder than a bow this past season and had a sheep butchered last week so we have meat.
Instead I went and killed foam deer last weekend. :archer:
