I dunno if anyone has started one but I thought I would be cool to see some small game kills. Let me start this party!
This one was taken this morning.

nice. I am jealous of your weather too. Not certain the current temp, but I doubt it is above 0 and the low for today is / was supposed to be -17.
We also can no longer see any leaves on the ground, even the ones sticking up a foot.
I am gonna try to get out some tomorrow though.

You're Echo is a beauty! Nice headshot on a squirrel! Single digits here today so squirrels are safe in my woods. It's all about the :campfire: and :coffee:
Congrats Todd!

LG and a CA Jack rabbit
It's like 40 or at least near it and the rain has started.
That's what I'm talking about there CA Bowhunter! Nice Jack Rabbit and bow.

Red with a CA Jack.
I hunt rabbits with a cocker spaniel. My first cocker was really good at it. One day he trapped a young one. He held it down, and in his own dog language said, "I am going to hug him and squeeze him and call him George". The bunny lived, but left, with a good bit of dog slobber, well loved and confused. Can you imagine that little rabbit trying to explain that to his bunny buddies?
He died a couple of years back. I got a 5 year old female that was used as a breeder and had never been out of cage. She is shy and sweet, but she does go after rabbits. This summer she caught a baby, no baby rabbit has ever been that loved up ever. I am going to take her hunting when it warms up, but I will have to use a bow as she is terrified at the sight of a gun. She is finding where the bunnies hide on our yard, but I am not too sure how she will react when I shoot one.
Here's a group of us UT guys doing a bit, here's the link...

Well I tried to add to the kill list but mr bunny and mr squirell alluded me today. A fresh 3 inches last night around the high teens in te woods with 20 mph winds, the animals proved they were smarter than me today.
I haven't started yet but I often hunt squirells after deer season. Actually I'm suprised more guys don't do it. It's fun with a no pressure kind of hunting environment and it sharpens your shooting on game.
Todd,
Not to get off-topic, but would you happen to know if Rockingham Archery club has found a lease for 2014. One of my favorite shoots, hate they lost their land!
Nice shootin' Slayer.
Richard....unfortunately, No.

Another CA bunny!
Keep them coming guys this is great!
No pics but my small game trophies include one rabbit, one squirrel, one armadillo. You have to pay attention to which squirels you shoot in my home state.
That bunny might be P & Y eligible Bjorn

I think I'm finally figuring out these critters. Shoot where you think they will be by the time the arrow gets there!
I heard through the Brush line, that CA BOWHUNTER,shot them Jacks with a 22 and posed his bow with em.
HEHEHE.

I'm not sure that counts as "small game"!!!
Thom
We thumped the heck out of rabbits for the past two years, but we are really down this year. I got one shot at dawn yesterday and the rest if the morning, nothing
I get one or two bunnies some times.

Caught this little thief under the bird feeder last fall. He got lucky on two previous occasions, but three strikes, and he was out! 17yards, broad side, right behind the shoulder! Lol. Ruined the front quarters, but the hinds and back straps were tasty!
Remember the photo of Hill with the string full of bunnies and birds? This small game thing was an obssesion with Hill. When that photo came out in the 60s, it justified my obssesion with birds, bunnies and bows. It needs to warm up a bit and I will be after them as well.
My first trad kill after taking up the sport in September. I thought I may have just got lucky, but have managed 2 more in the last few weeks!

Using a Simmons on a squirrel? That's just not even fair... :bigsmyl:
Does that CA bunny Bjorn is hoisting count as "small game"?

Well I know but I had one that I missed a deer with a day or so earlier and I figured it was dirty so why not! :goldtooth:
Them sharks eat squirrel too!
I shot a fox squirrel a number of years ago with my Zwickey on a deer hunt...windy, small 6pt walked too far out...last day of season...cold and damp. Squirrel kept taunting me on ground and shot and missed with my only judo point....then he goes up white oak and I try again with hunting arrow...shoot for shoulder area as he is facing straight away...missed.
THen he fell...broadhead sliced side of neck down to spine on one side so when it was mounted my buddy turned the head the opposite direction for my "missed shot" Has a nasty frankenstein scar sew up on other side if neck LOL

I shot my first groundhog with a compound, then I switched to stickbows and shot 293 more!
I've been at it for 28 years and can't wait for the spring thaw to get after them again.
Did I say I love to hunt groundhogs?
I'm going to try for a snow shoe hare in the next couple of weeks, those buggers seem to never stop when the dogs are on them, but it will be fun chucking some arrows in there direction.
You are infinitely more successful at groundhog hunting than I am.
Here's a couple of pics from our annual rabbit hunt in Feb. This is from last year. We hit a couple more that got away and one lucky rabbit popped out a few feet in front of one of our group who shall remain nameless but he was eating a sandwich at the time. The rabbit didn't stay around to watch. Another stopped on a path between two of us and we had to manuever in order not to shoot each other. The rabbit escaped!
What fun these thing are.

Not sure this counts as game, but its pretty small...

Now that's what I'm talking about a dead dillo! I bet your car insurance rates went up. That's why you took out the Geico.

As a matter of fact, my geico rate went up every year for about 5 years. Then I killed the gecko.

I've always wondered if those jack rabbits were fit to eat. Anybody try them? That's a lot of rabbit there.

I are a couple jack rabbits when I lived in AZ. Pretty good eating imo.
Sweet thread!! I'm gonna have to try Mooseman's advise cuz the fox squirrels around here are the string jumpinest little buggers I've ever shot at!!
Steve
Ya man this is a great thread. Gotta love small game:)
Uh oh, a dead Dilla....... That can get somebody excited for another trip way Down South.

When you're anticipating where a squirrel will be, I assume you aim just in front of their head? I've had way too many leave a spot on the tree before my arrow could get to it.
I know you're best off to get them while they aren't looking, but those opportunities are few and far between for me.
I focus on a eye and let'r rip! Wise man told me aim small miss small. It doesn't work all the time but it has been working for me.

WOW Gordon, thats some pretty good shooting to take 5-6 Squirrels in one outing. How many hours were you out hunting and how many shots did it take? Either way, congrats on a fine day in the bushy tail woods.

Thanks Tony, I promise you it's more technique than skill. The dogs a big help.
Cool posts. Jealous of you Georgia boys.

that's a 120-quart ice chest. he was a good sized cat.
I've always wondered if those jack rabbits were fit to eat. Anybody try them? That's a lot of rabbit there.
If yer real hungry, you can choke em down. There are a few Pheasant recipes, that cam make em tolerable.
I once made a 60 mile horseback trip,in the heat of the summer,so i wouldnt hafta eat another Jack.LOL
Shot a Jack in Manitoba bout 40 years ago. Pieced it. Shake and baked it, just like a chicken. It was great eating. Since then I have never lived in an area that had them. It would be great to go somewhere just to hunt jack rabbits.
What broadheads are ya'll use'n for small game ?? Seen several with some big braodheads used for deer & figured they mite be dulled down just a little for small game, mostly I'll use a judo or blunt.
great thread & pics, really like'n this, keep'em come'n.
