For years people have asked me why I choose to hunt with a stickbow and at times it was hard for me to explain with words. I've always wanted to express my feelings in a short and simple but meaningful response.
Thank goodness for attending Comptons, where I had the great fortune of meeting the Mitten brothers. There on their table was a poster of Mike with the quote "Measure Your Success in Proportion to Your Efforts". There it was!!! Basically how I felt about traditional bowhunting as well as life itself. Of course I needed to get a signed copy and proceeded back to the booth to show Staci.
In a future conversation with South, he too had very similar sentiments about the quote from Mike and saw it fitting to create a T-Shirt design utilizing his quote.
So here it is GANG!

That's perfect ! Yesterday my best friend stopped by the house when I wasn't home and was talking with my wife. We had recently went on a state park deer reduction hunt, he told my wife he was worried about me and why would I take a primitive weapon on a hunt like this. Now we have hunted together for 30 years which 27 of them now I have hunted with a recurve or longbow ( you would think he would know by now) she told him, that's who he is and that's how he is always going to be! My wife is great !! That saying sums it up! I will have to call South and buy a couple of those shirts.
-
That sums it up for a lot of us, I think!
Cool shirt!

As we used to say...........Far Out!!!! Very cool

-
My same feelings.

I don't shoot a Stalker but have been inspired by both South and Mike's efforts over the years. Might have to get me one of those!
-
Far Out? Knawbone, you are giving away your age! But as we used to say when I was young, Far Out! That quote needs to be put on a bumper sticker. While it applies so well to traditional bowhunting, it also fits many of life's undertakings.

Not to be a spellchecker but it's supposed to be measure success in preparation to your effort not Proportion!! But does mike okay this.......?.??haha but very we'll spoken words
-
Yes, South spoke to Mike before he worked on the design. Does your poster from Mike say "preparation"??? Please adviseā¦
If I did spell it wrong and Mike's quote does say preparation, I'll be happy to use this quote as I measure my success in "relation to" the amount of effort that I put in.
Thank you,
Ryan
-
Yes it does say preparation!!!! Pm herd bull that's what my posters says!
-
Thank you for the info! I'll have South contact Mike.
-
Either way... I'm a lot more successful than I had previously thought. Lots of preparation, time in the woods and shooting.
Just no meat in the freezer. :banghead:
-
Hmmm.... the poster Mike gave me and hand wrote on it says "proportion". Maybe somewhere along the line he changed things up?
-
I used the same quote many years ago in a series of continuing education presentations for hunter education instructors. I believe the original was "The true hunter measures success in proportion to his effort." If I recall correctly, my source credited Saxton Pope.
-
I had the wording slightly wrong, but it seems clear that the sentiment should, indeed, be attributed to Saxton Pope. From the home page of the Pope and Young Club:
"The true hunter counts his achievement in proportion to the effort involved and the fairness of the sport."
--Saxton Pope

Either way, it's a cool shirt and the saying fits!
-
Huh, Here I bought a gadget to measure success. Its in my bag of tricks next to the whiz bang deer magnet.
That quote sums it up pretty good.
