Last year longrifle got a bunny hunt going in WNY that I couldn't attend. Since the St Jude hunt isn't until mid Feb. I was wondering if anyone was interested on getting another hunt here to the west going again this month ?
I don't think that will be a problem... last year was a lot of fun. Ill be watching this one :) you are talking Jan right?
Yup January. Kinda short notice I know but this isn't planning a safari. We just need to pick a spot and show up with our bows.I'm fortunate to have a very open schedule and I just hope we can get a date that will allow for a good turn out.
I'll be there with my dogs again but I wont be hunting because I had shoulder surgery two weeks ago. Longrifle emailed me a couple weeks ago about getting together again this year so I'm sure he will be interested. Did you guys have a place in mind?
I'd be interested in attending, depending on the date.
Last year you fellas didn't get into the rabbits on Harwood but was that weather or just no bunnies ? I used to hunt Hanging Bog (Rushford)for grouse late in the season and shot a few rabbits.I haven't been there in 5 years but it used to be fair hunting along the south side.Iroquois NWR has some bunnies but parking in the winter can be tough.I saw very few rabbit tracks while deer hunting this year on the Tonawanda WMA.Anybody been to Carlton Hill lately ? Suggestions ?
I attended last year and intend on it this year. I hear tell The Hornell area may be a hidden gold mine for rabbits- let me see what I can find out. It would also be more central for folks wanting to attend from the central part of the state. We had a great time last year!
I'm game, Hornell would not be far for me. David do you know of some land there?
I forgot who I was talking to, but they said there was good rabbit hunting on state land there. I'll have to map the area and do some scouting around. I want to do more rabbit hunting this winter and that would be a good place to start. A hunt and scout is in order. Ya Jim, that area is about central to all you guys that attended last year and central to 3 or 4 of us here in the finger lakes area. If the bunnies are there it would be a good spot that would lend to a bigger attendance.( hopefully )
Still my mind wanders to shooting carp :bigsmyl:
Marv, you beat me to it, I was waiting til the holidays were over to get some dates out there. I would like to have 2 hunts if we can, one soon and maybe another a few weeks later. The main hounds men are Alex and Jim without there dogs it's just a walk in the snow. I am going to ask that anyone who is interested in going do some research on a good spot.I will be in contact with Alex and Jim and get the dates set. We want to try and make this a yearly event, great group of guys last year.
I'm about the worst person one could find to try and plan anything so I sure didn't mean to get ahead of you longrifle . You know most of the guys and have done this before. I just didn't want to miss it ! Take the lead Ger please and I'll follow as best I can.
I called a couple of encon officers yesterday to try and find out where the best place is to go for rabbits. haven't heard from them yet, and may not(who knows). I am going to try and get up there ( Hornell area ) today and look at a couple of plots of state land. I may not find tracks in the snow, but brush chewing should be present if nothing else. Maybe I'll run in to some hunters or locals with info. Should be a nice day to get out with the Bushbow and look for some bunnies.
I would love to hunt with ya'll.
Going to a new spot would be fun, I don't mind traveling. I agree that it was a lot of fun watching the dogs work so what ever the houndsmen favor is fine with me. Two hunts would be great, let's set one up as soon as we can then. Time goes to fast... it will be spawning carp before Jim knows it. :)
Just got back from scouting around the Hornell area. Wow, what a day! I started out looking for state land, but couldn't find either tract I was looking for. Tha land in that area is all farm land with most of it planted in corn. When I saw how choice the area looked for bunnies, I started going to farms and knocking on doors. I got permission from two land owners and will hopefully get calls from two more. Three people I talked to, said almost any farmer in the area would let us hunt. I explained we were trad hunters looking for farm land to hunt and would be very respectful of their land. I got nothing but possitive responces from all I talked to.
When I get a tally on all the available land and we can come up with a date, I will contact the land owners and give them an Idea of how many of us will attend and work out the details. The last farmer I talked to said he would take us to some choice bottom land surrounded by corn, where the coyotes and fox have little to no effect on the rabbit numbers.
This area looks really good guys. The farms are in the Arkport township very central for all concerned. The prospects for shooting action looking good here. Open to any other Ideas or areas of course.
David you are a good scout! Thanks for taking the time to look around.
Sounds good David thanks for the leg work. The dogs are getting itchy to get out. Lets try to set something up soon before the winter starts to take a toll on the bunnies, that way maybe we can also get out more than once.
Cool arkport is not too far from me, I hope we can set a start time a little later than last years if it's too early and snows that day I'm out because I have to work til 7:30 most snow days.
The one question I got asked the most was how many hunters and dogs would there be. I said probably 7 to 12 people and 2 or 3 dogs. I need to talk to a couple of land owners and find out where some of these tracts of land are, and where we can park. I'll finalize everything this week so we can set a date. I told the land owners that we would want to hunt this month in all likelihood. We should have plenty of good Bunnie turf to hunt! We could all meet in the small town of Arkport, and carpool to the hunt sights. The hunt sights would probably not accommodate all of our vehicles.
I believe the one valley location is near town with corn and brush along the railroad tracks!...............I'm thinking some Bunnies should be there for sure! None of these people I talked to said anything about other rabbit hunters hunting their land.Looks like some good situations for late season bow hunting.
If everyone is in agreement, I'll go ahead and seal the deal.......so to speak!
Jim, we could probably hunt this area as many times as we wanted. We should be able to hunt two weekends this month with the probability of good weather falling on at least one. You'll be right there with us my friend! Let's try and plan it for a decent weekend weather wise.......... Bunnies don't like stormy blowing snow anyway!
No problem Marv, thanks so much for the scouting and leg work David,as far as I'm concerned Arport / Hornell would be great , looks like we have a spot. David why don't you get with Alex and Jim and pick a date that will work and we can rally the troops . So glad you found some spots, I am getting pumped. Its so nice to know that we are working together to get this done.
Nice job and thanks for the work Knawbone.Looking forward to a the hunt and meeting you men.I have always used field pts with a washer for bunnies but are we restricting ourselves to any point type(blunts ?) for this group hunt ?
I was happy to be able to get out and find some areas to hunt. I had no intention of knocking on doors, but after surveying the area, it just seamed like the thing to do. We may very well have hundreds of acres to hunt. Corn, corn, and more corn fields with pockets of brush, overgrown orchards, brushy draws and hillsides. We also have permission to hunt on 60 acres of what should be prime habitat in the valley. Hopefully I'll get a call or two from other land owners.
Marv those heads would be fine or blunts or judos, I don't think the houndsmen wouldn't want any broadheads because sometimes the dogs get to the rabbits befor you do.
Id love to attend if that would be allright with everyone
Larry you are more than welcome to join us, were is Martville in relation to Arkport.
I'm about an hour east of rochester
Well I'll throw my hat in the ring for this one , good job scouting David :clapper:
Drew, I was thinking of you yesterday when I was in Arkport. I'm glad you chimed in. I was going to get a hold of you about attending the hunt, but no need know. Should be a good one!
The only other concern I have at this point, is how many attend for the hunt. I'm a little hesitant to take to many people to these farms until I run it by the land owners. If we get enough people wanting to go, we could possibly split up into two groups, but that may cause some issues as well. Let's get a tally on how many want to go so I can figure something out. A party of 12 to 15 would be ok, but more than that may be a little more than the land owners want on their property at one time. I don't want to spoil a good situation with these people.
Please don't anyone invite people other than Trad gang members until we can get a head count.
Looks like so far we have 10 TG members intending on coming. I told the land owners about 12 people and would like to keep this number or close. Once we hunt these spots and gain some trust with these people, we could possibly increase our group #'s in the future. I intend on keeping my word to these folks, so again, please don't invite anyone before we can know for sure the prospective group size.
Yep sounds like a good plan David we don't want to bite the hand that feeds us.
Exactly Jim, I don't mean to sound overbearing here, but I want these land owners to know that we are honest and respectful of their expectations and their land.
David, it is good to keep ones word.
Do ya'll have room for myself and another? He recently started hunting with trad gear. I thank you for your consideration.
Nanuk, In all fairness to everyone involved in this hunt, this first hunt of 2014 needs to remain Trad Gang member's only.I hope you understand the situation. Thanks
sounds good David
I always keep my word Jim, My father told me long ago that a man is only as good as his word.
I might be late once in a great while- but I always keep my word
Is it carp shooting time yet?
Boy I'm glad I got my name in the hat when I did, this filled up fast. Looks like we have our 2nd Annual T-Gang Rabbit Roundup comming together nicely. I'll bring the guest book!!!
I totally understand and will fly solo if there is still room.
What date are we thinking for the first hunt?
Sounds like you have enough guys for this one. I'll try and jump in if you have room next time around. Hope some of this snow is gone soon.
Looks like this weekend is too close and will be too cold and or windy to hold the first hunt. If You and Alex are in agreement Jim C. then let's shoot for and hope for milder weather the weekend of the 11th and 12th. This will give me time to contact some other land owners. You can never have too many places to hunt.
Bob and Tom, You guys are very welcome to come to this hunt. With the two of you, that would be 12 TG members participating in this hunt. I believe twelve fills this hunt nicely.
I believe once we hunt these new found properties, and we gain some trust with the land owners, then perhaps we can make it a bigger hunt in the future.
OK folks, it now looks like we have a full hunt.
Ok, I'm flexible on the date. just excited to meet up. I'll stay tuned...
11th or 12th would work for me. The only day I have any other commitment this month in the 18th and even then I could make it for most of the day.I hope we get some warmer temps and maybe even a little melt before then. Its too cold for me to even want to practice today.
I could do the 11th, how bout a 9:00 meeting time? that will give me time after work to get ready and get there.
Sounds good Jim, Let's set the date for 1/11 @ 9;00 am. We can all meet at the 7/11 convenience store in the village of Arkport. Arkport can be reached via RT. 86 (old 17 ) from the east. And it can be reached via Rt.70 Rt.36 from the west. Arkport is a small one horse town with one traffic light. The seven eleven store is in the center of town. Let's meet on the Rt. 36 side of the store where there is more parking space. There is parking on the street as well. If at all possible, it would be advantageous if some of us can car pool as parking may be a bit of a problem at the hunt sites. If we can all car pool in 3 vehicles to our destinations, that would be good.We can work that out when we meet at the 7/11.

Jim C., are you bringing your beagle? Three dogs would be good. Thank you Houndsmen for your contributions to this hunt.
:campfire:
Have a great hunt!
that will work for me, looks like it's just over a 2 hour trip.
Any weekend this month will work for me.
Nope, I don't have any beagles but 1/11 works for me too, ill be there.
I've got a beagle, he's not the best but I can bring him if you'd like.
Sounds great men I'm in and will be there, thanks again David for all the leg work this year. Let the 2014 Rabbit Roundup begin.
:jumper:
Larry bring him if you like
Talked to one of the land owners today. He said he is maxed out with rabbit hunters, and was sorry he couldn't help us out. I am going to continue pursuing access to land in the valley, as that is our best bet for rabbit density. Rabbits on the hill tops will be undoubtedly few and far between as a rule. I believe in all likelihood, the state lands will be on the higher elevations as well. I am going back to the Arkport area tomorrow and see what else I can dig up. If anyone wants to go with me, just give me a shout!
Anyone up for a joint venture to Arkport tomorrow? I think it would be good if I had another TG member along while asking folks for info and permission to hunt. I had a really good time visiting with folks up there the other day. I think we can make this a really worthwhile trip, and gain some good quality rabbit access. No big deal if you don't, just asking! I'm sure a lot of us have things to take care of, so that we can play next Saturday.Believe me I understand how it is!
I would love to go with you David but I'm headed to Oswego to visit friends tomorrow . Sorry!
Dave check your pm's
Not a problem at all Gerald, I totally understand. Thanks
Looks like a nice day for a walk David, keep us posted.
I need to go this morning and blow out my mother's driveway this morning. I thought it might have warmed up a little outside by now, but it;s staying frigged and windy. Tomorrow the temp. is suppose to hit forty ( if you can believe that! ) and is looking like a better day to be outside. I will continue my scouting tomorrow if not later today. I now have the state lands mapped and will check out those areas as well. I will also re visit the farmer and find out where his 60 acre farm land is located in the valley. I'm wagering that it will be our best place to hunt Sat. the 11th. Will also ask for permission to hunt that overgrown orchard and hillside. His wife I talked to the other day indicated that he would most likely give us the go ahead. I'm getting physicked guys, this is going to be good- I hope!
Knawbone, please do not post individuals names or properties on open forums. Some land owners can feel that is a real privacy invasion. If there is an individual you want to tell send them a private message. You can lose a lot of properties this way.
Thank's Swampbow, never thought about it being an issue.
I have my Bunny arrows ready :knothead:
I just got mine ready too Jim, hopefully we will put them to good use. I didn't get up to Arkport today, but will go tomorrow for sure.
Thank's again for the heads up Marvin, I edited the post.
Knawbone, I just would hate to see the hard work you've put in getting permissions lost. Thanks for your efforts and I'm looking forward to meeting you and the others I don't know next week. Hope this weather continues to improve as I really need to get a little practice in this week !
Can't see something like that being a real issue on this particular forum, but I suppose it's a possibility. I suppose if there were more trad archers in the Hornell area that hunted or new those farms, or the farmers themselves were frequenting archery web sites, then it could definitely be an issue. Wasn't too worried about it, but thanks anyway Marvin........ it was good food for thought!
So are we still on for this weekend and if so is the time and meet location still the same?
I hope they're not getting the snow in Arkport we're getting here right now ! I got some practice in yesterday afternoon ; I need to see some VERY large rabbits Saturday.
Everything is good from my end Alex. There saying right now that it's suppose to be 40 degrees or higher for Sat. and Sunday. Iv' got one farmer that say's he'll let us hunt, and one other that we'll have to stop and ask. I found what looks to be a pretty good piece of state land if we lose enough snow or for some reason need another place to hunt.
We should do a lunch like we did last year! That was a great lunch!!
Sounds like a plan on the lunch, can't wait.
Ok, what's everybody bring for lunch Sat. I was thinking of making a venison stew, but I don't know how Id' keep it hot. Anybody got a 12 volt Microwave oven  Seriously though, Somebody brought hot chili or something like that last year, but don't know how they kept it hot. I think it was stone knife. The next hunt we'll have to have rabbit stew..........right guys!!!!! So anywho, for you fellas that didn't lunch with us last year, we all brought a little something to share for lunch. Let's toss some Ideas around and see what everybody comes up with.
David, it wasn't me but I do remember it. I'll have to think of something to bring that is warm.
I think it was Gerald who brought the hot dish last year, if I remember right he just had the crock pot covered with blankets to keep the heat in after warming it at home.

Ah to be young and have a good memory :p
Young? You know I got my AArp stuff weeks ago! Probably the only reason I remember is because all I can do is sit around and think for the last couple of weeks after surgery.
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/graemlins/bigsmyl2.gif
Crock pot with blankets it is......I'm bring venison stew. ( If I don't forget ) :knothead:
Dave did you find my cousins place ?
Yes I did Bob. The only Rabbit tracks I saw there was from a couple of rabbits living under your cousin's cabin. Nice little place there. There were plenty of deer tracks and five beds within seventy yards behind the cabin. That Hiltonville state forest looks pretty good. All the state land I found was only accessible by seasonal road. That could be a good thing. Plus, I'm willing to bet there is less predation on the rabbits calling the top of the hill their home. If there are any there!I didn't walk the state lands, but the cover is good.....thick!
Alex, sent you a PM
The dogs will be ready to run after all this cold weather we have been having. How many dogs will we have, I'm going to bring one of mine.
I'm bringing two.
to long a trip for me to bring anything that will stay warm, but I'll bring some beverages, water, gator aid....
Hey TG'ers, Sounding like were going to get rained out Sat. Sunday however is suppose to be dry and warm. I'm thinking we really should plan on having this hunt the 12th if at all possible. Conditions should be perfect, and I don;t think we will get a better opportunity all winter. Let's face it, how many good weekends do we get in Jan. and Feb. Not to darn many. Sorry guys, but there calling for 60 to 70% rain for Sat. Nothing for Sunday, with temps in the 40.s Let's try to make this hunt happen this weekend before the winter does anymore damage to the population. What do you say guys, can we leave the door open for Sunday if we need to?
I would do it next sat. but if the hunt is on Sun. I'm out Sunday is my day to worship the Lord. But don't call it off because of me.
Jim, I totally respect that decision, but I don;t want anyone left out either. Let's pray for a half way decent day Sat. A drizzly rain is no big deal, but if it pours it makes it impossible. I want this hunt to be Sat. if at all possible. Everyone is set for Saturday and we will still hold it on Sat. if that is the conscientious.
I can't make Sunday either
OK, one for all and all for one. If we can't do it Sat. then let's shoot for next Sat and so forth. I don't want anyone left out of this hunt if at all possible. Just wouldn't be right!
I have church on Sun as well, but the bigger question is who will make the decision to postpone til the following Sat? I probably live the closest to Arkport only a 35 minute drive for me, I probably wouldn't drive 2 hours to hunt in the pouring rain. Some of you guys are comming from a distance.I would be willing to check the weather here at let's say 6:30 am and make an updated post/ weather report so guys can make there own decesion.I for one don't mind some rain but, not too excited about hunting in a downpour.
Some moisture makes for better tracking but a down would be a waste of time and not fun.
What ever you guy's decide I'm for
A postponement is cool with me if we're expecting significant rainfall. I'll be driving in from south of Buffalo and will miss a shift at work also. Just my two cents.

Let's still shoot for Sat. and let us all pray sincerely for a break in the forecast.I don't really want to miss my worship time either.
Unless it's pouring rain Sat. morning, I plan on hunting some rabbits. We'll all know better what to do once Fri. evening gets here.

Sounds good David.
Good Idea Longrifle, I guess we'll all have to see what the weatherman says Friday. and ALL decide then. I for one would like to hunt if at all possible. Keep praying everyone
:shaka:
road closing blizzard at the start of the week... rain by the end... lol
I heard an inch of rain on Sat.
Yep, and windy, not looking good I'm afraid! :banghead:
So with the weather that we may be getting Saturday should we just plan on doing this the following weekend ?
I would say yes Alex, If our Sat. hunt gets cancelled because of weather, which it looks like this Sat. will, ( near 100% chance of rain ) then I believe everyone is in agreement that the hunt would try to be held the following Saturday. We can all chime in this evening to confirm this.
I would be all in for next sat. if we don't do it this one :archer2:
I just found this thread. I haven't been on line much. It looks like I'll be working every weekend for awhile. Wish I could make it though. I'll be following this thread and hope to see some pics. Good luck to everyone.
:campfire:
The first hunt date we set last year got snowed out. This year looks like a repeat with our first Sat. being cancelled because of rain. I hope everyone that was going to hunt this Sat. can shift to next Sat. Hopefully the weather conditions will be good, and we can all enjoy a good hunt and a great time. I really enjoy hunting with my fellow Trad Gang'ers whether we kill any rabbits or not!
Now it's looking like a 1/4 inch of rain this sat. and cold next sat. What is the verdict?
I'll make the motion to postpone till next Saturday.
I can make it next Saturday....whatever you guys decide
Just heard the weather report for Corning - Hornell area. 90% chance of rain with 15 to 20 mph winds with gusts up to 45 mph. but 40 deg. temps. I'm up for whatever you guys decide. Who ever has the dogs gets the last vote in my opinion. Maybe we should take a vote, don't know! :dunno:
I'm 100mi & 2° away. I'll follow the group & hounds man.would be more fun with a dog. Would go tomorrow & next sat. Jim
I'll second the motion to move to next Saturday
I'll third it :bigsmyl:
I don't mind the cold, but rain and wind is not very enjoyable. If it doesn't rain very much tomorrow, we're all going to kill ourselves, but it's looking like next Sat. will be a better option - I hope!
So is next Saturday the day?
Agreed as I get older getting soaked and standing outside all day doesn't have the appeal it use to. My knee is telling me the weatherman is right for change.
I can go any Sat. for the foreseeable future, Next Sat, is fine with me. It will be worth the wait!
Gerald, what's your vote?
Gerald I apologize, your the gentleman that started this hunt and you should have the loudest voice in the decisions concerning this hunt. Lead us on Capt.
Sorry guys just got home and checked the thread, next Sat is fine. As much as I want to go we have to listen to the voice of reason. I think we need to meet same time(9:00) same place 7-11 Arkport on next Sat. If someone can't make it hopefully they can on our next outing. All in favor say " I ".
Yikes ! The ONLY day I can't go is next Saturday but I hope you fellas have it all come together and have a great hunt. Hopefully there will be a second outing.
I
I
I... am with you brothers.
I
I lets start getting a head count to go following next Saturday.
I can go next Sat.
Rest easy on our decision men cause it's pouring here now :readit:
Eye
9:22 here and dry as a bone. I have a feeling not for long though! Thanks for the report Jim.
Bob are you still going to ride with me next weekend?
Pouring in Bergen
Alex I will check the schedule and let you know
Good call men on postponement ,it's nasty out.
Alex and I ran the hounds late this afternoon just to get them primed up for next weekend.
Hopefully we have half of the action that we saw today, the dogs ran for almost 4 hours straight and were into rabbits the whole time.
That's great you two, looking forward to Sat.
Maybe we should hunt where you guys ran the dogs. :bigsmyl:

Lol... going to need a real good cracker for that one lol
When the hunt date moved to a day I couldn't go I was totally depressed but hearing about your special cracker fixins has helped relieve that somewhat ( carp are for coon bait !).
Wife is makin Chocolate chip cookies hope some are left when I get there

Weather report says snow for Steuben county and Eastward. Arkport is very near the Steuben Allegheny line. Hopefully we will see a trace of snow in Arkport by 9:oo am. Tompkins, Cortland counties may see 3 to 5 by 7:00 am.
Whats it look like for western NY?
:archer2:
Tomorrow is the only day, including weekdays, until the end of season that I couldn't go. I hope you all have a great hunt and fellowship. Please keep me on the list if there's a 2nd hunt.

Have fun fellas. Lucky me, Im headed off to work. :banghead:
Going to be a fun day
Sorry I won't be able to join you guys today. We had a family medical emergency this week. Have fun and shoot straight.
Have a great time Guys. Keeping this up top for reports upon your return.
?????????????????????????????????????? :campfire: :coffee:
Well we had a great group if guys , 8 of us total. Had a couple good runs with the 3 beagles and 2 missed shots. Thanks so much to all of you guys who came from near and far to hunt today. The food, stories, and laughter were top shelf for me. Met some new trad buds today(Bob,Drew,Larry)and again was reminded why I love Trad so much....The people.

The food, stories, and laughter were top shelf for me. Met some new trad buds today(Bob,Drew,Larry)and again was reminded why I love Trad so much....The people.
Great to meet up with you guys today new and old friends . I think we walked and talked as much as we hunted , what a blast . Awesome group of guys Thanks for having me . Drew
Glad you guys had a great time!
Got a date set for the next hunt ?
I sure did have a great time what a blessing to hang out with such a great bunch of people. The dogs did a great job the rabbits were sitting tight under cover and a fresh snow covered almost all the tracks so we worked for the runs we had. I know there were a few pictures taken can't wait to see them. Were hoping to repeat this in s couple weeks.
How blessed I am to be associated with TG and the members I get to spend time with. As always, I am humbled to know these people with such great character and a love for God's great earth.
Thanks again Guys for a great time and the sharing of good hunting dogs and food. Thanks to Bob and Larry and Drew for joining our hunt this year. It's a tough area of the state to find Rabbits this time of year, but we always have a fantastic time. Some day we may even get lucky and kill a Bunnie or two. Until next time, God's speed my friends.
It's always a blessing being able to get together with fellow trad hunters...meeting up with old friends and making new. Thanks fella's for letting me tag along.
Our group of Trad Gang members

I wanted to start my post by thanking my fellow hunters for sharing a great day walking in the winter woods. The shared hunting stories, casual conversation, stump shots, and laughter were just what I needed.
Thanks Alex and Jim for bringing the over eager puppies. There is nothing wrong with a walk... but the hounds made the day a hunt!
My pictures are not the best but I do enjoy photos in threads so I will add em in to give you an idea of our day.
Coming from north of buffalo the roads were a little sloppy. It took an hour on the 90 before I could set the cruise...

David did some great leg work knocking on doors and getting us new ground to hunt. Thanks Knawbone! This was our first stop.

I would describe the area as open farm land with brushy ravines that we targeted...
If my memory is correct we saw three rabbits in the first spot
(http://i.imgur.com/I7KG4CE.jpg)
We really had to work hard to get the dogs on a track. here we are spread out along a corn field. Jim pushed a rabbit out of a little clump of cover between a corn field and hay field

At 1:00 we broke for lunch. We had plenty of food but for me the highlight was Davids still hot venison stew and the two 10-packs of hot dunkin coffee I believe Andrew brought... hot stuff on a cold day is the best!

The group shot was from our 2nd and last stop for the day. We had our best/longest run of the day here. My last photo and the favorite I took, was taken here as the sun set on our day... Good times! Thanks Guys :)

Jim nice pictures I make a motion that you are the group photographer from now on, Gerald told me last night that you made out ok with the keys glad to hear that. Are you planning to make the next hunt?
Thanks Alex... I like taking photos, even if its just with a little phone camera. Ya... Gerald and David were really good buddies last night, I am grateful to them both.
I plan to make the next hunts unless it falls on a work weekend.
I hope to see you there.
OK so for the next one Dad said we could come to his farm . I would like to plan for next saturday unless temps are too low. His place is in west sparta and I will give better directions or a meeting place as we get closer. Drew
Sounds good to me
Me to.
I made tentative plans to hunt with a friend next weekend if he could come along I'll be in, I can set him up with a bow for the hunt.
no problem Jim
If he has rabbits like deer, you guys will be all set!
Fantastic Drew, I'm in!
Okay very cool I'm in, this time I'm bringing my Bob Lee :readit:
Weather looks to be ok highs in the mid 20's.
I'll be there as long as you have room for me.I hated missing this first outing but I had a family gathering I simply couldn't miss and stay married. I see some faces familiar to me from
3d shoots over the years(Flying Arrow and Hawkeye come to mind) and can't wait to get together .
Glad you guys had a good time, I took Lucy out last Sun and didn't see any. This past weekend I went skiing with my family, perhaps this weekend coming up I'll get out again
Hey Jim, Bring Bob Lee and I'll bring Howard Hill! :bigsmyl: :archer2:

Food and hunting for food always is a good time.
looks like I will have veni chili and the time is good if everyone agrees

Thanks Brother and thanks for the package
This is going to be a blast :campfire:

I can hunt this Saturday. Would love to join in with you guys if you got room for one more.
Brian you live too close not to come, please join us.
Thanks for the address Drew, see you guys on Sat.
I'm a terrible cook but I can hit Tim Hortons on the way. I'll bring the donuts !
We may have to eat a couple extra to weigh us down going to be windy :bigsmyl:
Yea Jim, I'm hearing 20 to 30 deg. but windy! Sounds like a repeat of last Sat. weather. Not bad considering the norm this winter! I'm thinking Feb. may bring some descent weekends after this extreme cold. Let's keep after them Rabbits. :archer:
I'm hoping some one brings some more home made peanut butter cookies!!!! Those cookies rocked!!!! :shaka:
those cookies were good!

I would think they would run good after this cold snap Jim.Sat. will be the first day it's been over 10 deg. this week! Maybe we'll get lucky if it's a little warmer?
Guys I do t think there will be any peanut butter cookies this time, my family will be gone most of the day tomorrow we will have to see.
OK, that's it, no cookies? I'm out!!
David there might be some cookies after all, my son awoke early this morning to make them befor they left for the day.
Very thoughtful of your Son Gerald. That's great news. Thank your Son for us. I can still taste how good those cookies were, looking forward to more! :clapper: :clapper:
I'm bringing cornbread to go with Drew's chili!! Oh, and butter! :knothead:

See ya in the morning everybody!!!
Have fun guys!
There was blood shed :D
rabbit or human? :)
wabbit
Well guys all I can say is today was a complete blast!! If you missed it I would not miss the next one , we had action all day and I mean 9:00-4:00. We saw 21 different rabbits,8 shots taken and 1 kill and one escaped down his hole unfortunately with Marvs arrow( he would have doubled today if that one would not have gotten away. The weather was cold and windy but, the action was hot. Thanks soooooo much again Drew for being rabbit guide and your dad.For the dogs Albert, Penny and Noka they were champs( and there owners). And to the men Drew,Jim,Alex,David,Brian,&Marv the game hog!! You guys are the best.
P.S. Drew your wife's chili rocks.
Thanks Drew you got some awesome rabbit grounds there, good luck on the hog hunt be safe traveling there.
Thanks Guy's for the fellowship it was a blast.
That was a hunt for the memory banks... what a great time. Thanks you Drew and to your wife for the great chili. Thank you Alex once again for making a hunt for us. Without the use of your and Jim's dogs, it wouldn't be a complete or action packed hunt.Pretty darn gracious for a man that is recuperating from shoulder surgery! As Gerald said, you guys are the best. Really enjoy the heck out of everyone and every hunt. The shooting and harvesting is secondary to the quality time spent with my trad brothers. When's the next one?.......can't wait!!!! :clapper:

here is our champion for the day Marvin
Thanks guys I had a great time with all of you .
Thanks Alex
David its been my pleasure, love to see the dogs work and to see guys shoot rabbits over my dogs. Evan though I cant draw a bow this year I'm still having a blast with you guys.
Who knew hunting bunnies in a blizzard was such fun ? Thanks for letting me join your group men ; I had a great time. Special thanks to Drew and his family for letting us run their grounds and to the houndsmen whose little dogs made the day. Too bad we had to have the eldest and least photogenic for the "hero" pic.
I wish I could have been there but family duties kept me home. I thought about you guys several times today and prayed for a good hunt. I'm very glad to see it was a success! Good job to all on a great hunt. It sounds like it was a blast.
Congrats Marvin,
Looks like a Great way to spend the day with Great people!
Photo credits for the following pictures goes to Gerald, technical credit goes to me :readit:
Congrats guys. That's a big bunny! Almost as big as some of the deer down here
Yep Jim you have been dethroned as the king game hog. All kidding aside I would not want to be any game animal that Marvin drew on he is one heck of a good shot.
Nice job fella's! I hope I can meet up with ya'll and do some huntin in the future.
It's nice to have a name to go with Marvin's face as I've been seeing him at Traditional shoots for over ten years now and we are almost neighbors. I'll make sure to say hi over the summer. Looks like a great time was had sorry I missed it.
We missed you Bob , could have used a fourth beagle :wavey:
Good shooting Marvin! Did you guys notice why there were so many rabbits there? No predators! I didn't see any tracks of fox, coyote, and saw no sign of owls or hawks. All the other places we have hunted had fox working those areas. Excellent spot Drew..... thanks again for sharing it with us.
Thanks for the kind words but its more like even the blind hog finds an acorn now and then.I noticed the same thing concerning the lack of predator sign at Drews. I saw just 1 set of fox tracks yesterday. Must be a real good trapper or two working his area. I have fox in my yard almost daily(fresh tracks this morning) and a hawk and an owl that attack at my bird feeders.Thirty acres here and No rabbits.
Yep, that's what I figured Marvin. Trappers are doing a good job in the area. Lucky us! :D
Thanks for posting the pics for us Jim. Looking forward to trying it again.
Great times!
Good to see tradgangers together having fun
F-Manny
Lets set up for another go on the 8th of Feb.
Lord willing I'm in
Way to get after it fellas.
Yippy ya hooooooo.......I'm in! This time I won't be lighting my pipe when expecting a rabbit!
I'm in if its not to cold I'll bring the two dogs I've been bringing plus my old dog. Just a word of warning the old dog is still a hard hunter for her age and she has a severe hatred for rabbits if she gets ahold of a wounded one there will be nothing left of it so everyone needs to beat her to it.

Not six dogs again :scared:
This will allow plenty of time for more of them there pb cookies
Yes, must have PB cookies!!!! Maybe a crock pot full of bean soup and we'll stink those Bunnies out.
Jim sounds like it may be the dreaded large pack.
Great job guys looks like you had a lot of fun congratulations
I will put it on my calender, and I will try to get the cookie boy to crank out some more.Thought of maybe bringing him along with me to see the action if it's OK.
That would be great Gerald I'll see if either of my girls want to go.
Count the 4th beagle in !
you guys are having to much fun!
I've got enough arrows left for another run so its a date for the 8th. !
Way to beat the winter doldrums to a bloody pulp. :clapper:
Bob does this mean that I'm going to have to buy another shock collar and bell.
Great job guys! What a hunt :)
Jim C, are you going to be able to make it??? We missed ya ,we need Larry also.
Hi Gerald, I missed your post. I'm available this weekend :) let's see if we can get the guys talking.
Hey Jim, Where we will be hunting, you can leave your keys in your car!LOL :readit:  I know....not funny, Iv' done it too! Get ready to do some shooting bro!
I was practicing today and if I shoot the same Saturday the rabbits will be very safe.
I wish I could make it guys, but between work and a few other hot projects, I'm going to have to entrust the rest of you to kill all the bunnies  :archer:
Lol. :help:
When is Drew coming home?
Good morning Jim :wavey:
I was wondering that myself??
I thought Drew said he wasn't going to be home until Friday and that was why we first talked about doing the hunt next week because he was going to be worn out from the travel ?
The last I knew, he said he wanted to shoot for the 8 th.
yup, the 8th; that's what he said. When were first talking in the barn about his upcoming hog hunt I thought he said that he wasn't sure it would be the best date because he wouldn't be back until late Thursday or Friday. I'm sure he'll chime in as soon as he's back. I've only got one working ear and don't always get things right but I'm pretty sure that was the conversation !
If he's back home in time I'm planning on hunting .
Where do you meet and do can anyone go?
I hope that he doesn't have the snow we do, it's deep and fluffy and the rabbits wont run in it.
I only got about 4 or 5 in. at my place Jim.
BeNoIt we are meeting at Drew's fathers farm and it has been open to all Trad Gang members. We are some what up in the air for this Saturday because Drew was out of state on a hog hunt so weather may be keeping him from getting home on time. I'm sure as soon as there is a confirmation about Saturday someone will post it in the mean time you can pm me if you want more info.
QuoteOriginally posted by Knawbone:

My yard bunnies aren't liking this at all :(
:campfire:
I am home fellas and its a go if you want to run them . Its up to the guys with dogs to decide if the conditions are right ( Jim , Alex ?)
Drew,
How'd you do on your hog hunt ? :campfire:
Welcome home Drew, hope you had a great time in Gawga. I think the boys want to go if you don't have to much snow up on the hill. I'm always game for a hunt!
Drew I hope you don't feel obligated after a long hunt and drive home but if you want to go I'm in . Let me know what time I should be there.
Jim I'm a little computer challenged cant seem to get back to your pm but if you look at page 15 and 16 Drew posted the address and his phone number sorry I hope you get this tonight.
I'm a go for the A.M.
I guess it would depend on how much snow there is up there, we got a lot of fluffy stuff here. If the snow is deep and fluffy they wont run good at all and will most likely just bail down a hole. If there isn't a ton then it might be good again, I see it's going to warm up above freezing a couple days next week if it does that it will settle it down some. My two cents would be to give Drew a break and try it next week but if it's on I will show up, let us know what you think Drew.
Drew's the host and to me it should be his call. All that travel could leave one wore out for sure and I hope he is sore from dragging hogs too. My feeling (as always) is the best time to hunt is whenever you can. Next Saturday is Double T Archery Clubs Traditional Cabin Fever Shoot so that's where I'll be but if you fellas go at it then good luck.
I missed the cabin fever shoot last year due to the Howard Hill hog hunt in Gawga. I will be there next Sat. as well. See you there Marvin!
Drew left the decition up to the houndsman, just waiting to hear back from Drew Marvin. It's getting late, so I'll retire and see what the decition is in the morning.
Beddy bye time for me too...check this thread in the am and see what's up.
Are we on for today?
Anybody ? Guess not as I'd have to leave in 20 minutes
sorry for the late reply but if the houndsman want to hunt lets hunt
shooting for noon
Thanks Drew but I have made different plans for today. I sure would like to go next week or the week after, I know some of the guys want to go to a shoot next week so I would be open to waiting a couple weeks to suit them. Just let me know either way or if none of that works for you we may be able to set up something different. I'm truly looking forward to getting together for a Bunny hunt before the end of season.
Lets see what interest is generated and go from there
I won't be able to go next week, already have plans with my wife. But I sure would like to go one more time before the seasons ends.
go today then
looks like not enough interest for today so lets shooot for next weekend
Went out with my lab this afternoon and the snow was real tough to walk in. Never saw a rabbit track. We are going to need a little warm up to pack it down some.
Well I'm not going to have my old dog there next weekend she took a turn for the worst the last couple of days and I had to have her put down today. I was really hoping to be able to let her hunt the rest of the year before I had to make this decision.
Sorry to hear that Alex... anyone who has really loved a dog knows the feeling...
Thanks Jim she was by far my best hunting dog. She was the second dog we lost in less than a year.
Wow Alex that stinks.
Sorry to hear that Alex
Thanks Bob now I really have an extra collar for you when you come with us lol. It was her time she had a large tumor on her stomach which was actually one of her mamory(spelling?) glands it had become the size of a baseball.
sorry to hear Alex
Thanks Drew spent the better part of the day on the backhoe trying to dig a grave for her , the grounds so frozen it took me all afternoon.
My condolences Alex.
Thanks David.
I got shocked by one of those (don't ask) and I'm not scared
I promise to put a bell on that collar so we always know where you are and I will only start out on the lowest shock setting.
Alex, Its always hard to say good bye to good friends. Sorry to hear of your friends passing.
Thanks Charlie and thank you to everybody for their kind words.
Sorry for your loss. I've had a fair number of furry hunting partners ; beagles, shorthairs, labs , and a Brittany and I know their passing, weather a champion or a knucklehead , is never without some sadness.
Thanks Marvin she will surely be missed she was my go to dog. She had a nose that you could trust 100% of the time. I actually got her for free with papers from one of the guys that I belonged to the local beagle club with. He was downsizing his kennel gave her away because she was never placing higher than second or third in trialing mainly do to the odd bark she had not her nose. She came from good lines her father was a national field champion, I never understood why the previous owner wouldn't put a little more time into her.
I know how you feel Alex, I had to have my chocolate lab put down , she was only 3 and had severe health problems, my hand was shaking badly as I wrote the check to the vet.
Drew we still on for this Saturday?
I talked to Drew this morning he is in for this Saturday if there is an interest, lets try to get a head count going.
Sorry for your loss it's tuff when it come's time to make that decision.
Maybe I'll hook up with you guys one of these weekends since I won't be able to attend Shawns hunt this weekend, when is your next hunt?
Thanks we are trying to get something for this Saturday, Drew has a spot with a lot of rabbits . We hunted there a few weeks ago and had action all day.
Is there a hunt this Saturday at Drews ? I was going to Double T Trad shoot but I'll skip it Sat and go Sunday instead if there's going to be another hunt.I had a great time at the last gathering and would like to see you fellas again. Perhaps we'll hear about Drew's trip too.
Marvin there will be a hunt on Saturday if there is enough interest. I texted Drew this morning and he said he is into it.
Its a go for saturday if we get some guys wanting to hunt.
Looks like no interest and to be honest if its as cold tommorow as it was today it would be tough to stay out .
ok thanks Drew.
I can't make it tomorrow , but would like to get out one last time before the season ends with all the guys.
I would enjoy another walk in the wood with you guys too. I hope we get it... my fingers are crossed!
I would like to make plans to go on Sat. for some bunnies. We need Drews approval and the gang and houndsmen to show up. Anyone want to try???
Next Sat. will be out for me as I have already made plans with our church. Good luck guy's
Alex????? Drew????? Jim C????? David????? Marv???? Brian????? Bob????? Larry????? Newbies ?????
I'm in Gerald, this will be the last weekend of the season,so it's this Sat. or wait till next season! Now that we have hunted Drew's dad's property, I think we can organize a better hunt. Jim N. has plans, but if Alex can bring one or two dogs that's all we need to move the rabbits. I'm thinking if we send watchers out and have them get into position "quietly", and then follow with the dogs, we should be able to put some bunnies in front of some bows. We could have done better the last hunt if we had curtailed the talking. The rabbits were avoiding us because they could hear exactly where we were. Those bunnies have big ears for a reason. I was just as guilty as everyone else with all the talking we did, but if we really want to get some bunnies, we need to hunt them like we're hunting Whitetails- seriously! JM2c
We will all have plenty of time to talk after the runs.
Let's get em guys!!!! :archer2: :shaka:
I can hunt this Saturday Gerald.
I'm in Gerald! And I'm serious David!
not sure for me , I might be in cuba NY helping a friend tap trees . i will let ya'll know and if I can't make it maybe my brother would host ya'll .
OK we have a few, but I would hate to go if the host wasn't there. Even if we get 1/2 a day it's our last chance, anyone else??
I had my dates wrong ; the Double T Cabin Fever Shoot in Amherst is this weekend {Feb 22/23} so that's where I'll be but I hope you guys clobber them.
If we can't go to Drews my father-in-law is checking on a spot near Arcade that we might be able to hunt, but it's not as big as Drews place maybe a 1/2 day of hunting.
My father-in-law got the OK to hunt the spot near Arcade, like I said it's not big enough for a all day gathering. So I will leave it up to you guys if you feel like giving it a go. If no one is interested I will probably go to Ithaca and hunt grouse with my good friend and his English setter. I personally need to know if it's a go by Thurs night .
I'm out for this weekend , I cant make it.
OK thanks Alex, well I guess that settles it both Jim and Alex can't go and they have the dogs. Thank you guys so much for the couple times we were able to get together this year, I had tons of fun as usual. We will have to try for maybe one outing earlier next year, then a few after the holidays as well. Thanks to all who came. Now my thoughts turn to CARP-A-THON!!!
Yes Gerald soon the carp will be spawning and we will be there to greet them :bigsmyl:
Can't wait Jim.
Looks as though the sun has set on yet another season! Im grateful to have shared some time with you all again this year... May we all make it to next year to hear the heartfelt bay of the little hounds.
:campfire:
I hear ya Jim, would like to see you at the carp a thon.
The feeling is mutual Jim. I really enjoy getting together with fellow trad bow hunters. The hunts we shared last year as well as this year have been a breath of fresh air for me. And the company has been second to none. Thanks to everyone for making this a great late season. Seems everyone is more than willing to contribute to the benefit of their fellow traddy, which makes you guys a special bunch. May we continue to share great hunts and great friendships in the years to come. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you. Knawbone
Thanks to all of you guys for having me in your group. Drew
I hope to make it Gerald. Well said David...
Our " group" as Drew said is very nice. Last year on our maiden hunt I (we) got to meet some new friends, this year our circle got bigger, with Drew, Marv, Larry, Bob, and Brian. And I know there were at least a couple more in the area that were interested, so hopefully by next years gatherings we can get them to come as well.Again thank you guys for the dogs, the farm, and the fun. Blessings Gerald
Man, if you fellas have the time this weekend do your own dogging. I know the beagles are awesome but if you just wanna get together to hunt, well,,, you all know that fun can be had just the same.
Glad you guys put together a good hunt out there and if fortune smiles upon me I'll hunt with you fellas next year.
It was a pleasure getting to hunt with you guys this year, always fun to meet fellow trad archers.....did I hear someone say carp-a-thon???
Now just where and when does this take place ??
:bigsmyl:
Larry we did it last year on Hemlock lake (Livingston county). Four of us went last year Jim's and Gerald on Jim's boat and my neighbor Doug and I on my boat . The carp on that lake average about 2 feet not real big but there is a ton of them. The scenery is awesome , no cottages or buildings on the lake and the accessibility is easy . I hope this year we have more of a turn out and more boats, but there is a size limitation on the lake which are 16' boat and 10 horse motor. I hope you can make it with us this year . Did you ever get ahold of Ritchie leather?
Sorry about bailing out on you guys this weekend I've been sick all week and I haven't been getting much sleep thought it was best if I didn't go out. Lets try and get an earlier start next year maybe right after Christmas. I'll post something about bowfishing in a month or two hope all of you rabbit hunters can change gears and go carping.
I did check them out online, although I haven't purchased any yet, still trying to make up my mind
No problem Alex, the weather is to " iffy" anyhow , get better.
Thanks Gerald, cant wait for the carp spawn.
Ya Alex, no worries. We get together when we can buddy.
feel better Alex
Thanks Drew I got my band saw fixed when do you want to finish that bow. Thanks Jim you going to get out on the water with us in the spring?
I hope so Alex... I love those thick ones... when they start to get a hump behind their head! Lol
Alex : lets try next weekend if you have time and are feeling better
Sounds good Drew call me
Precious memories how they linger ... Hey , about that time again ain't it ?
Very soon :bigsmyl:
