I have started shooting wood arrows that I dipped and fletched. They POC and I really like them. What is best bang for the buck with solid wood arrows? (straightness and limited variance) I am wondering about wood type as well as where to buy them??
Thanks!
Fir: Surewood Shafts
POC: Wapiti Archery
Sitka Spruce: Hildebrand
Quality wood shafting is not cheap but these companys offer the best IMO.

I have almost entirely switched over to Douglas Fir/Surewoods and all my recent purchases have been that (Surewood or Braveheart). The grain and straightness is heads above recent P.O. Cedar. They weigh a bit nore, however (and some see that as an advantage). But I still have a LOT of P.O. Cedar shafts to use up as well.
Someday I plan to order up some carbons - they appear durable - but I haven't figured out the inserts and adapters yet. With wood: pick a head and glue it on. I can handle that.
I'm very happy with the Doug Fir from Surewood Steve. Most tapered raw shafts will run around $45 per doz, cut your length with nock and point taper finished.
I'm also impressed with Compressed Ramin from Twig Archery. Reminds me of the old Forgewoods I shot back in the 70's.
Not a big fan of POC and hard to find quality Barrel tapered Ash.
Times two on Sitka Spruce from Hildebrand

there may surely be other good ones, but those woods and makers are top shelf and all i use - particularly doug fir for heavier mass weight arrows and sitka spruce for lighter ones.
I have found that the Douglas Fir from Surewood Shafts is day in and day out going to be absolutely top quality, every single shaft straight and consistent.
x2 what Jim Wright said. It is like cedar 50 years ago.
Allegheney Mountain Arrow Woods sells some really nice hardwood shafting. I get hickory shaft from him and they have been very good quality.
I agree with 58Winters. All three of these are about the best in the type of shafting listed. You will have to pick which type is best for you.
Surewoods, call Steve and let him know the weight you want, they can isually find it. Class act
Douglas fir all the way for me. I did get ahold of some Hemloc shafts from Surewood and they seem to have the same characteristics as douglas fir, just not the higher weight. I have made some up, but have not shot any. I plan on donating them to the PBS banquet in Cincinnati this March.
BUT, like I mentioned, I only shoot douglas fir. There are a few suppliers that are sponsors here on TG that sell either the raw shafts or completed arrows.
A few years ago, I did a pretty extensive research on the best arrow shaft for ME, and hands down, the douglas fir shafts that came from Surewood beat out all the others. YMMV
Nothing compares to the vintage compressed cedars I found from Sweetlands. EVERY shaft spined the same, weight w/in 5grs, and the wood grain consistency is exceptional. They are a lot tougher than all the soft wood shafts and their mass weight gives me the 10grs per pound I like.
If you run across some? Do yourself a favor and pick them up.
I recommend POC from RMSG. This is the only source I know of for spine matched wood shafts. Especially as you drop in draw weight the industry standard 6# variance just isn't acceptable.
