Title: How do you store your hunting clothes?
Post by: Dry Creek on December 28, 2013, 09:26:00 PM
I keep my hunting clothes in a Hunters Specialties bag with double zippers. The zipper on the bag messed up yesterday morning. Wondering how you store your hunting clothes, before I buy another bag.

I keep a couple days supply in a large tupperware tote, in the back of my truck.  I used to be religious about using the bags and stopped doing that long ago.  I dress behind my truck at the trail head, carry in the outers for once I get to my stand.

If that is the big green scent free bag, that is the same way I store my clothes. I have 3 of those bags, and on 2 of them, the outer zipper is broken. I got a LOT of use out of them before the zippers went bad, so I don't worry about it. I will replace them sometime with new ones, but don't really worry about it cause the inner zipper is still good.

I use one of those scent lock totes , not so much for the scent lock as the secure lid latches and seal.

I've used about everything, and I like the big dry bags from Sierra Trading Post about the best these days.  I can keep several changes of clothes and my boots in there.  It's all in one place and ready to go when I am.  Like Chuck, I change at the truck, it's a pain when the weather gets cold, but worth it.  Those dry bags are cheap and a lot easier to transport than totes.  Ones mans opinion.

I hang them in a closet and don't worry about it. Critters upwind of me have no idea I'm there.  :)

Thanks guys
The inner zipper is the one that broke but the outside zipper is still good. May just keep using it for now.

I try to keep them in a bag or plastic container . The deer I hunt smell all kind of scents like diesel, gas, oil, ect.
The one thing I dont want them to smell is my human body odor. I wash em in bakin soda and I try to stay as clean as possible, and work the wind.

Cold weather gear stays in a plastic tub outside and warmer weather gear sits in my closet.

The moment you touch or put on your clothes they smell like. . . you- a human.  Never going to stop that.

I put them in a large clear plastic tote boxes with the latch lids.  Keeps things organized.  No need to spend $$ on special bags. If you do want clothes to smell fresh to you (a human nose!), pour baking soda in with the clothes.  Shake them off when you go to wear them and they smell amazingly fresh.

Nothing really special about the green bags. But they are convenient, they are pretty darn durable, and they hold scent in well. I like to wash my clothes with scent free detergent then throw them in the bags with a couple "fresh-earth" scent wafers. Like others have said you still need to play the wind. Doing this with your clothes may not be necessary but it puts my mind at ease a little when i smell like a dirt ball in the woods! I also just like the smell of the scent wafers, reminds me of hunting season    :D    :D

After washing with baking soda I usually put my clothes in a waterproof compression sack so I'm ready for my next trip. I store those inside a big Rubbermaid tote with some other gear and the combination seems to work fine.

I just throw mine in plastic bins. one for hats, gloves, rain gear etc. one for wool, one for tops, one for bottoms, and one for thermals.
Then just throw them in the rafters of my garage. they spend all year up there in car exahust, quad exaust, heads being boiled, traps boiled, lawnmower fumes, kerosne heater running, etc. (point being i dont worry about protecting them until i need them) Then i take out what i need and wash it and hunt in it. What i wash stays in a bin in the house for the season then goes back in the garage.

That is pretty close to what I do.

Store in large plastic containers, wash with scent free detergent just before season and then stick some cedar branches and leaves in with the clothing a week or two before season.

Mostly, the closet. Wool stuff is kept in a cedar chest. Once you put on clothes, they smell like a human. Even if the clothes themselves have no odor, the human body will immediately give you away. I rely on hunting the wind. While I don't knock any efforts to keep clothes odorless, I just don't think it affects what a deer smells in the woods.

Plastic storage bins in the basement. I wash the clothes in unscented detergent and found a local weed that is aromatic and I have several stalks in the tub with the clothes. I also used pantie shields adhered to the lid and spray cover scent onto them. I've stopped using the cover scent and just rely upon the aromatic weeds. I've had deer come in to me from down wind, so it must work.

I'm with KSDSAN once you put the clothes on they smell like you.  I hang my clothes on a pole in the basement and put them on when I want to hunt.  As much heat and scent that comes off my body makes it hard for me to believe that all the scent control the industry pushes on us work much.  I am a big believer in playing the wind and spend most of my time finding the right location.

I keep mine in a big plastic bin with the clamp locks too. I put it in back of my truck also and change when I get to my hunting spot provided it's not an out the back door hunt. I also put cedar and pine boughs in the container. It might not help with the animals picking up my scent but I like the way they smell. It gives me confidence.

they say Deer have a sense of smell 1000 times better then a human! so with that to a Deer fresh out the shower with scent free soap and washing our clothes in scent free laundry detergent, I bet we still Stink!! I store my clothes in Giant Ziplock bags, walmart sells them, I put Cedar Berries and small cedar Leaves crushed on concrete floor with my Hunting boots in a plastic container full of holes in each bag, then I store them in Clear Sterilite containers. these totes are then stored in garage after season ends until mid summer when I get them out (make sure the Fit MY Fat @$$!)and wear them while I practice for up coming season. I shoot 3D target at home and this year im joining SaltHawk Archery here in Hutchinson Kansas to shoot regular, I was so out of shape this hunting season!!

I use the scent bags to store my hunting clothes to keep the smells from my house getting in them, i.e. - food odors from cooking, the scented candles my wife lights up, etc..

I keep them in a couple of big Tupperware bins for storage.  I leave them out on the deck over chairs if it's not going to rain during hunting season.  If it will rain or frost is expected I just toss them in the bins in the house.  I'm not all that concerned about scent, I keep my clothes and myself clean and hope the wind cooperates.

Rubber Made Tubs. Started doing this when I hunted and drove with Bud's that smoked. Just do it all the time now. I drive with the tub in my pickup bed. Dress when I get to my spot.

I dry mine, thump em with a stick to dust em off.  I have a 55 gallon barrel in the garage that they get stored in-with a handfull of sage.  No rodents or other things can get in and they come out in the Fall ready for duty.
Store them dry and they will last a long time

I use a big plastic bin, put everything in there and then toss in a couple of those cheap Hunters Specialties earth scented wafers in and close it up. I keep them this way through the season as well.  Every time I pull anything out it smells like dirt. These work well to replace car air fresheners as well. During the season, keep one hanging on the vent rather than new car smell or coconut whatever. I realized I was going through all this scent control business and getting in the truck and getting blasted for a 1/2 with "Island Coconut" scent.

During the season, after washing with some gimmicky scent free soap I hang them outside on the  covered porch away from the dogs, grill, and anything else.  They always smell like the wind.

I use the exact same one as you. The big green one. I love and have used it for 3 years. I keep all my camo gear in it.  Zippers could be better but luckily mine is holding up nicely.

I have a closet in the spare bedroom in the basement lined with cedar. All my hunting clothes are hung up in there. About once a year I will cut some cedar tree sections a couple inches thick and put in the closet to help the cedar smell. No problem with moths either.
