I need to put a finish on a boo backed Ipe. The Ipe is oily and from reading it seems I need deft. My local hardware nor Walmart seems to have it. Is Deft the full name of it?
Thanks, Ron
I get mine at ACE Hardware. Make sure to get the Deft Laquer. The can is Blue. I love it. If you can't find that you might want to try Spar Varnish. That can is green.

I use the Deft Laquer for Turkey calls, but it is not water proof. Maybe I am wrong, there could be another Deft product.
I'm sure a bowyer will chime in but I believe you can shoot some laquer or shellac as a sealer coat, then go with your normal finish.
8up,
The product I have used is called Deft-thane.
Its a polyurathane (SP?)
It is a really good poly formula and is waterproof. I typically use 3 or 4 coats.
I like the satin finish. I think I bought the last can at Home Depot. I comes in a spray can as well. either is good.
Harry.
Order it online and have it shipped to your home or business at:

8up.
I almost forgot, wipe down your bow with denatured alcohol a couple of times, let dry a few minutes prior to the first coat of poly.
This should remove the oil on the surface of the bow. The poly drys fast, before any oil can migrate back to the surface of the wood again!
Harry.
Thin coats of poly are the key. Too thick and it will never dry over the oily woods even with a good wipedown. Like takedown say's get the surface oil out of the way with alcohol and then keep it thin. Four or five thin coats beats one thick coat every time.
The regular Deft (nonpoly) is not waterproof. I finished one with it and got to watch the bow go from beautiful to spotty to hazey white during wet 3D shoot. It dried out but...
It make a beutiful finish but is not durable or waterproof at all.
Thanks for the replys everyone. Now if I could just get the Mini-wax stain to dry.
