I start planning my trips this time of year but wanted to see if anyone here might be interested in a early season DIY hunt, maybe 3-day hunt the 1st one.
I'm new down there but I have some decent public spots picked out in Baltimore County. right now I'm not sure if I'm in a motel or camping it really depends on who is going and expected weather..
I'll be driving down in the late spring to do some pre scouting.
let me know when you plan to come down, would love to meet so other trad hunters,Baltimore county is my turkey got to spot, would love to help out with some good spots and join you for a hunt.
Trying to talk some of my wheelie friends into the same thing
It sounds great. Always wanted to hunt there Can you post dates? I'll be shooting my North Star or one of my jets. Camping will be the way to go. I have two kufuru tipis. And to hunt with trad members or fellow longbow men would be great. Some big bucks down there.
from my understanding there are a lot of deer. not sure on size...
If we can throw around some dates, I maybe up for it. I think there season starts early.
Sounds like a great idea, let me know the dates.
Generally our season start 9/1 and runs until 1/31 with breaks for rifle and M/L seasons. You can still bowhunt but must wear orange during those seasons.
Lots of great opportunities here in MD with some pretty nice deer. There are some great archery spots plus there are quite a few Sunday hunting days that are worth timeing to hunt. Sunday hunting has to be on porivate property thought so keep that in mind. Season is very long. This year 5SEP to 31 JAN. Second buck can be taken once you take two does.
Ted, I'm def in the running. couple questions though...Sunday hunting? the regs seem to say sunday hunting in october/november?
Is there oppurtunity for Sika and Whitetail in the same areas?
Or are Sika like hunting snipe?
No Sunday hunting on public land.
sika are on the eastern shore, and at this point sunday hunting is mainly oct/nov,private land only...and not in baltimore county
That sucks aboutthe no Sunday hunting but i'm interested. I was looking at Delaware too.
I always wanted to try MD.too.
If your going to come to Maryland, I'd recommend hunting sika over whitetail. You can hunt white tails anywhere, but sika are truly unique. There is plenty of public land in Dorchester County and lots of places where you have a chance at either species. Sunday hunting is limited to certain Sundays in certain counties and only on private land, which can be very difficult to gain access to. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Fishing Bay WMA, and Chesapeake Forests are in the heart of Sika country. Season dates for Blackwater are more restrictive and require a separate permit. I'd be happy to point folks in the right direction.
Delete double post.
I'm moving there in February so I would definitely be down to hunt! x2 on Sika deer, if you are going to make a special trip at least in area that may hold both animals.
I'd love to hunt. I have friends in the baltimore area that I could stay with/visit. Hunting Sitkas would be really cool.
Maryland guys how would our success be on Sitkas vs Whitetails?
I just moved to Baltimore Co. This month. I've already scouted some private land. Any of you guys waterfowl hunt? I'm trying to hit it hard the rest of this season. On the deer tho, I see litterally 75-100 almost everyday while driving around for my job. Seems to be a ton of wildlife everywhere
thanks for all the interest! 1st yeah no sunday hunting and the spots I did a lot of research on are free permit spots. but I've talked to a lot of people and park rangers in those areas and posted on other forums and pretty much the unlimited doe areas between Carrol and Baltimore county seem decent and not hunted too hard, I think a few parks you might need to take a doe first before a buck which I always do anyway plus back straps for supper.
it would be a good time if we could do this meet up,,, also this is just something I wanted to do and by no means would I be the sole organizer if any of you had better ideas on locations based on experience.
I'd like to set up the spring scouting when there is a 3D shoot or trad meetup in the area to mix it up,, I'll be checking around in the MD forum soon for that.
I did do some research on the sitkas and it does look like a good hunt that I will do but maybe if I came down a 2nd time, its a wet marshy type hunt and I'm figuring a little later in the season rather than early is the better bet..
once there was definite interest I figured we'd see what the vote was on camping..
The Baltimore Bowmans Traditinal shoot is a great venue and worth taking in. This year it will be May 16,17,18. Camping is on the grounds and free.
Sika, Whitetails, I don't care...I just wanna get on a hunt where I will actually SEE some deer. lol
There are some drier areas of Blackwater National Refuge where you will see whitetails but generally they don't inhabit the swamps like the Sika do. Sika hunting is a little specialized and hip boots are a must along with Thermacells. Scouting is very important since they don't seem to have a lot of easily identified trails like whitetails do. They also tend to go nocturnal somethimes.
Don't be put off though. Plenty of guys just wander blindly into the marsh, put up a stand and shoot Sikas. Just remember, 6 point stags aren't behind every tree like the outfitters want you to believe. If you see any Sika in range shoot it. It may be your only chance.
Count me in please! Moved here a year ago from Wisconsin and have been able to do some minimal scouting. Mostly in Carroll Co. Just over the border from Baltimore Co. Would love to meet some other trad shooters. I am planning on attending the Baltimore bowmen event. Also looking to join a club out here. I live in Owings Mills so it seems I'm not close to any clubs.

this sounds like a pretty good shoot to meet up and get things started, maybe head out in the afternoons and scout some areas. if you guys want there could do two groups those who want Sitka's and those who want whitetails, I know I'm going for the whitetails first then maybe the 2nd time down maybe a Friday and Saturday I'll go for the sitkas.
My son lives in Arnold, MD. He is in charge at the Annapolis U.S. Coast Guard station. Senior Chief Boatswain Mate Corbin Ross. He shoots a recurve and I just bought my 8 year old grandson a new Howard Hill bow and back quiver for Christmas. He may be interested in hooking up with some of you that are in the area. You can give him a call. Ask for Senior Chief Ross.

If a hunt is planned just let me know. I would love to join in on some fun
barebow1,
I'm a member of Heart of Maryland Bowhunters and our range is in Sykesville. We hold a half dozen 3-D shoot/year and are looking for working members. Our nucleus of traditional shooters shoot almost every weekend starting in Jan at one club or another within an hour from Eldersburg. You are welcome to join us.
Contact me if you are interested.
barebow1, I'll second what reddogge (Rich) said. You're a lot closer to a bowhunting club than you think. At Heart Of Maryland we have a very good group of trad shooters and we're looking for anyone else who would want to join and be an active member. As Rich said, we shoot a couple times a month around central Maryland and we'd love to have someone new tag along. Baltimore Bowman have a once a month shoot starting in February up until the "Classic" in May. DO NOT miss the Baltimore Bowman Traditional Classic. That is one heck of a great time.
For those interested in hunting Maryland there is a lot of decent public bowhunting only ground available in the central part of the State. I would be happy to sit with a group and show you some possibilities at the BBTC in May.
Hatrick,, I'll be there either myself or hopefully with others when the time comes if they go but I can talk with you about what I already have and see what you think and what your opinions are.
Sounds great. There will be several others I camp with that can chime in as well. When the time comes, just pull up a chair to the camp fire and we'll fill you in. Just talking about the BBTC gets me fired up. It's my favorite shoot of the year.
after the 1st I'll put in for the time off, thanks.
hope everyones season went well,,, this thread had a few people interested in this. checking to see if any of you want to meet at the Baltimore Shoot. I know the local Maryland folks who posted in this thread will be there but curious if anyone from any other state is going or wants to go because I might be able to swing thru and get you?
I want to mix some scouting with the shoot and scout the afternoons or maybe arrive a day or two early to scout some public spots or even leave the shoot early (or add another day or two off) to scout.
Hi I hunted Sika 1 time this season .My health kept me from more hunting . I hope to do several huntes 2014-2015 .Keep in mind that you can not scout Blackwater unless it is a government scheduled scouting day and you register in .I plan on chasing Sika most of the time , but would be up for some Whitetail hunting . I was taken by sikaville ,and the people there . The land is butefull and the people are open and warm , a truly special place .
The Baltimore shoot for getting together sounds good . But we're and what time? Down by the practice buts ? I'll be there Friday. Sat. Leaveing. Sunday. Keep posting. Thanks
havent put a time in yet, trying to find out who's coming from up here. if I end up coming in alone I'll be there Friday Morning. I'm getting into Maryland on the 16th, decided to do some early scouting before the shoot.
I shall be at the shoot. When it gets closer ill shoot you my cell number.
ok im interested in the sika...how do you hunt them and what are they? i know they are a species of deer and i think it would be cool to hunt a new species, but what all is involved for hunting sika?

sorry double post...
that's the kickah (Boston slang) I don't think I'm hunting Sika's but there are a few guys in the early posts who where interested so you guys can set something up for the sikas.
Sika are a small Japanese elk . They are free ranging , and have been in Maryland from the earliest 1900 ens . They live primary in the salt marches . I am far from an expert , but intend on becoming one . I fell in love with the marsh and hunting them .
I'm interested in going also. Just need to know dates of the hunt. Also might try and go to the shoot. Thanks
ah yeah id be interested in the sika's because i can hunt whitetails here in my home woods. Whenever i have the chance to hunt something new i'd take every chance i get to go after it. just my .02..but however it would be neat to set up something where a bunch of us go after something wether it be sikas or whitetails...so long as im hunting with my curve, im happy :archer:
