I normally like the feel of wood/glass but I have a hankering to install a beaver tail grip on one of my bows. I know how to do it, but I don't have the material....where could I find a finished piece to use?

Big Jim has nice black dyed tails. For natural colored vegetable tanned tails WWW.sheridanleather.com. (http://WWW.sheridanleather.com.) has nice stuff.

Make sure that you really know how to do it... The Beaver tail has no stretch in it at all. Also you have to glue it on, I ruined one before I talked to Big Jim. I have been working with leather for many years and I thought I knew what I was doing, lol... Big Jim has Beaver tails for sale all of the time. Once again note, if you have very large hands like I do let him know, the tails are not very big. I have Beaver tail grips on all off my longbows and I love them.

Thanks for the info. I have heard they can be hard to work with. Luckily, my grip is straight and the same circumference all the way around so no contours to mess with. Glue is a definite. I'm still not 100% on it, but it would look very nice :)

They look and feel dang nice. I hear the beaver even liked it.
I feel I shoot better with one and any type of grip will insulate you from some of the shock found in any bow.

I have a Beaver Tail grip on my Big Jim TC, love the Grip.

I just finished one myself. Not to bad to install. Just be careful when stiching to ends together as the leather can tear out very easily.

To say they don't stretch at all is no exactly correct. They don't stretch like other leather though.
Although very tough you can pull the thread through the leather.
The tails Big Jim ,myself and many others that get them from me are shaved down. Other wise the picture that is attached would be very hard to achieve.

When I do contoured grips I like to soak them in a little warm water, stretch them as tight as I can, then use spring clamps to hold them in place on the back of the riser.
After drying and cutting them to fit, I glue a small strip along each side, on the back, where I'm going to stitch them. This has avoided many rip-outs when I'm stitching, as well as all those four letter words that like to come out when you're on your second to last stitch and it rips out. :scared:

Here's what you do.
1)Cover the handle in plastic wrap to protect from moisture.
2)Soak the Beaver Tail in warm water for 10 minutes.
3)Remove from water and pat dry then wrap tightly around the handle stretching it to conform around the curves of the grip. Get all the wrinkles out then wrap tightly with plastic wrap.
4)Come back in two hours and remove everything.
5)Let the tail dry 24 hours then trim to size.
6)Glue on with "Barge Cement" and lace up.
SUPER EASY!

I tried that and couldn't get the leather to conform to the handle. It was a pretty deep dish, maybe that's the problem?

I have installed them on some pretty tough grips and that is were I learned some of my vocabulary. It can be done though and it definitely worth it.

I have used the grips offered by Carribou(Abe Penner) and have always been happy with the results. Abe provides great instructions with his grips and fast delivery at a good price. Good luck. I'm sure you'll like the finished product. I do for sure. :campfire:
