Title: Kentucky #2
Post by: Austin Brown on December 16, 2013, 02:00:00 PM
Not much of a story, but had time for a quick hunt this morning.  At first light I walked in and spooked a few from near the stand I was heading to.  Darn crunchy ice has been slow to leave around here.  But after climbing up and buckling in I picked up movement to my right, not a deer but one of the biggest coyotes I have seen while hunting.  His winter coat was almost completely black on the top of his body, very unique for around here.  He busted me trying to nock an arrow and headed for the hills though.

Not long after that I saw legs moving my way through the thick brush in front of me.  Went ahead and carefully positioned myself around the small patch of ice on the middle of my stand. Slowly a young buck materialized from the thick brush and briars. Looked like he was going to pass out of range off to my right, in fact I was about to sit back down, when he for reasons unknown doubled back my way.  He hit the bank of the small pond that this stand is next to and forced him out in front of me at around 12 yards.

I drew just as he cleared a small tree and had to hold longer than I liked, but finally gave a clear shot ever so slightly quartering away.  The arrow buried in nice and tight in the pocket and he went down in seconds still in my view from the stand.  Unfortunately for me though, he went down in the very bottom of a big holler below me.  The drag out was rough but worth every bit of the work.

Really blessed with another quick, clean kill.  I'm really loving my new to me little 49lb Big River longbow.  Today's buck I shot with an Autumn Orange 1918 and a 125gr Magnus two blade.

Randy, I'm about as far west as you can get, about 25 miles southwest of Paducah.  Would love to shoot with you guys sometime though.

Beautiful Kentucky buck!!!  I graduated from Berea, it's a good bit east of you but I sure do miss that country.

By my calculations that would put you smack dab in the middle of Carlisle county.  I'm just on the McCracken Ballard line.  We should shoot some time.  Don't get mixed up with that Grider fella...he's a little touched in the head  :D

Nice buck by the way....congrats.
