Depends on what the bow was designed for.  BCY and Brownell are the two major bowstring manufacturers, and both offer several different ones.  You can also use other materials--linen, sinew, artificial sinew, plant fibers, squirrel hide, etc.  I prefer the ones that were developed for use as a bowstring myself.

I am partial to B50 dacron two bundle flemish twist on recurves and longbows even if they are beefed up to handle fast flight.

Chad at recurves.com makes great strings for me, call him and he'll get you set up for anything.

Its also pretty quiet which is good for hunting. If all yer doin is shooting targets I'd shoot fast flight or something like it, if yer bow will take it. Unless its a wooden bow then its B-50 or better yet, linen!

B-50 will stretch for a while, but once broken in, it stretches very little. It't also quiet and easier on the bow, especially recurves. You may gain 4-5 feet per second with fastflight string, but I'm not sure you could tell that much difference without a chronograph. The other advantage (IMO) of B50 is price; it is MUCH cheaper than fastflight. On the other hand, fastflight is supposed to last a lot longer, so it may all equal out.

The bottom line, it B50 is safe and quiet on any bow. If your bow is not designed for fastflight string, it can be ruined/destroyed by fastflight.

Sam,
  Are you looking to build a string or buy a string?  What type of bow is it for?  Is the bow made to handle the new modern string material like fast flight and such?  For a bow made to handle modern string material, I prefer dynaflight97.  It is low creep, good speed, and is quieter than some other fast flight material, IMHO.  If your bow isn't made to handle new material than you can't go wrong with good old dacron B-50 or B-500.  There are alot of other materials out there you can make strings out of, gut, silk, hemp, etc.  Give us a little more info on what you are looking for.

b-50 does stretch a bit but its just soooo quiet!!

its a fair trade, i just twist it up when it shows signs of wear

Can you still get the good linen thread over there? Barbours (I believe) is the brand name of it. Hemp makes a decent string also, if you're looking for natural materials.

Sam the shipping for a string to the UK is negligible........get Chad to make you one. He is the standard these days.
