Is there one on this site? I've done a search and found pics here and there. With so many members on this site, surely some of you guys have some widows to show off. I have a couple more weeks to decide on what woods I want in my bow and with a little more time, maybe I will be able to show my new BW off. So let's see em.....

Here are some pictures of my pch with tiger myrtle limbs and zircote riser.

Ive always liked the plain graybarks and autumn oaks. This one is kinda old school, plain gray bark.

Oldie but Goodie thread. Sold most of the bows I posted but still have a few...
-
I have a PCHX that is Zircote and Tiger Myrtle that looks almost identical to Happy1's only it has the Phenolic in it... 56", 64# at my draw...
I also have a late 90's era SA III with two sets of 58" limbs (62# and 73# at my draw)... And a '00, MA II with two sets of 60" limbs (60# and 71# at my draw)... Both of these currently have the standard grip, but the PCH has the low grip that I really, really like... Plan on sending both the SA and MA in Widow to get refinished (as they need it...) and to get the grips reworked into the low grip... Once I get that done I'm planning on sending the risers to Dave Windauer to get them checkered as I like the grips that way...
I shot the SA exclusively for several years when I changed over to traditional in 2000. I just recently tried a skinny string on it after getting the PCH with a skinny string on it through the classifieds... I didn't see a whole lot of difference performance wise, but did get a big difference in the noise, or lack there of, in the bow at the shot.
That simple change has really woke them back up for me as that was the reason I hadn't shot them in about 10 years and was shooting longbows... They were simply quieter... I'm much more consistent with the Widows and truthfully compare every bow I've ever owned to them over the years... I have been shooting them exclusively lately and don't see going to anything else over these three bows... Perfect hunting weapons for me... I shoot them better/more consistently then any other, and now that they are quiet I'm happy all the way around with them.

bowhunter4life i really like the looks of those 90-00 era widows any chance you could get a few more picts of those two? Also do you shoot your SAIII or i guess all your widows without a bow quiver? Just a couple days ago I started shooting my SAII without the quiver on and it was a lot quieter than before. I love bow quivers but this change in noise level is seriously making me consider a hip quiver for my widow.
-
I don't have any other pics right now, but I'll work on some in the near future...
As far as bow quiver or not... More often then not I'll have a bow quiver on the bow... Really like the Selway Side-mount in 5-arrow... Solid and quiet... But, I do use my Arrowmaster from time to time also... Depends on what I'm hunting or how I feel that particular day...

PSR under attack!!

Hey Denny, How often do you hunt with your PSR? Whats your draw on it??

I have the exact same feelings, i cant imagine a better hunting bow than my PSA's I have pretty well put my longbow on the rack since i got the PSA as quiet as I have i will post pics when i get home, but neither are fancy, one a greybark and the other a autumn oak minus the white....

Here's a PSA with Ironwood riser and Olive Ash limbs.

Beautiful bows, BW sure finds some nice wood to put into them...
-
I'm really diggin this thread. Ive always liked BW bows especially the older ones from the later 80s early 90s for some reason. I've never really thought that BW were the most beautiful bows don't get me wrong there are some gorgeous BW bows but I have always thought that they are just sweet looking weapons for "hunting" which is my main concern.

Well guys, just got home from selling my compound and I now have the money to buy my 1st widow. I'm calling them up tomorrow (or as soon as I can make up my mind on wood selection) and gonna get this thing started. It's almost surreal for me as I've sold off my modest recurve collection to come up with most of the money and finally sold my compound to top it off. This is a lot of money for me, hope my decision to sale off my compound and go fully trad, with a widow, is the right one.

Congrats on your decision you can't go wrong with a widow I love mine and don't worry if things don't go the way you hope you can get a compound anytime they are a dime a dozen. widow

SMART MOVE!! You may want to test drive the model that you decide on. Toby, Roger and John are great to deal with. I've been shooting Widows since '95, they're my all time favorite. Good Luck with your decision.

-
Beautiful bows!!! Thanks for taking the time to post your picts. Really enjoying this thread.
-
Hoyt...that's the first bow I've seen with Ziricote limb veneers. Stunning! It's one of my favorite woods.
-
Some great looking bows here. Good luck on your choice Paul
You really cand go wrong! I haven't met a Widow I didn't like.
-
I'm eventually going to get a second set of limbs for my PCHX... Myrtle Burl to compliment the Tiger Myrtle and Zircote... 56", and somewhere in the mid 70# at my draw...
I've also thought of getting one of the Camo bows... But just don't have the $'s to get everything I want... Oh, I mean NEED! ;)
-
Sean, I just tried a 60" 64# this year and liked it so much I ordered a twin. haven't hunted with them much, but doubled up on does one night.

Hoyt, that's one good looking PTF.
-
Denny that's great, I shot my first "Robin Hood" with a PSR, I'm sorry that I got rid of it, my next Widow is going to be a PSR.
Hoyt, that sure is one pretty bow! I hunted Bears in Maine 3 of the last 4 years with Roger and Toby. They brought some beauties with them for all to shoot. Needless to say, I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!!!
-
Well my order has been placed, now the wait begins. Just ordered a pchII with no white on the bow and black glass on the back of the limbs. Can't wait.....
-
Paul, You wont be sorry. My PCH II is my #1 bow. That things taken a beating, and is solid as a rock! I've taken deer, bear, squirrels, rabbits and turkeys with it. Good luck!!!

Will...Nice collection! Who did the checkering on the grips for you?
-
Dave at Schafer. Don't get it done. If you do you will never have one without it. Working on getting mine done one at a time.
-
Was waiting for you to chime in with your bows Will... Would still like to have that PCH II... Well that B&W Ebony would be nice too... I have a B&W Ebony with Gaboon Ebony riser Thunderchild and that is some of the best natural camo in a tree stand for the late season!
I have to thank you too Will, I wanted to try the low grip but you threw me over the top... And it is probably the best grip for me I've ever used!

Ha! Too late, I got a Tall Tines with a checkered grip and now I need one on my Widow too. Getting ready to send it in to get the grip changed to low so figured now would be as good a time as any to checker it.
-
No doubt the Low grip is by far my favorite!!

Not one of my widows, but I've always thought the MAs were tops and I love the osage.

That MA looks like it has a really low cut shelf. Will has some great looking bows.

Those are some beautiful looking Widows. Im going to place an order the first of the year, but am just so torn between Widows and Zippers. I have been going back anf forth for months now!
-
Thanks for posting the photos......I am thinking real serious about completing the cycle where I started out with many years ago. Anybody got a low poundage (44-46 lb) 56-58 Incher they want to part with in helping this old dude complete the cycle?
-
That Zircote - Myrtle Burl is beautiful!! I really like it!

The bows here are amazing and the fact that they perform as well .
Just appreciate all the bows and in particular the wide choice of those great veneers. I wont pick out any but to name any would be an injustice to the others .
A question. This emergence of so many exotic veneers , is it a recent thing ?

Wow! That is a beauty! I was going to order one with the same type of laminates and zircote. Now I'm going to have to make some changes. It looks very similar to Greybark's PTF X. Personally, that is the nicest PL I have seen. Going to be very hard to top that!

Stunning. I'm trying to decide on what woods for my PLX I'm getting ready to order.
-
I heard through the grape vine BW had some extra extra nice Bocote arriving. That may be worth checking out.
-
So much for wood choices. They posted a T/D PLll in my specs in stock. Think I'm just gonna go that route, save a few bucks. Won't worry so much about dinging it up. Don't think the deer and hogs really care what the bow looks like. :biglaugh:
-
Steel -
I know what the right bow woods are, but the one on the left could be several - zebrawood and ziricote ?
I have a PSAX with ziricote and myrtle exactly like the one you pictured further up.
They are both very nice, for RH bows. :D
-
I love this thread.

Very good new to know. I just got rid of the rest of my compound bow stuff and am going over to Nixa in a little over a week to test drive some bows and hopefully order one. I've been looking really hard at a PLX in either bocote or myrtle burl

Naaa, life's too short to shoot an ugly bow. I'm gonna order me a PLX T/D Mon. :jumper:
-
Nice, nothing wrong with having a nice bow to admire while out hunting :)
-
Wow!!! Never owned a Widow but this thread is tempting.
-
I agree.....this thread hasn't done anything to quell the BW recurve fever I've got going on right now. :banghead:
-
I have had several over the years. My goto has been a PSAX Grey bark. The PL's are nice, but I am a recurve guy. Did a test drive on a PSR and loved it. Will definitely have one soon.
Just bought a PCHX that should be here wednesday. I will post pics.
-
The KB is a really nice shooting short bow. I've owned near two dozen different 50" to 56" trad bows during the last 5 years and these KB's are pretty impressive to shoot. I set up the 54" and 56" KB's with a 10 strand SBD string and have been shooting the last two evenings. Both are very quiet and smooth at 27" draw, plus I'm stacking arrows in the bullseye better than I have for a while. The weight/design of the riser really makes these bows easier to shoot than most of the short bows I've owned.
-
Well I have a 7 to 9 week wait. 62" T/D PLX all black glass, beavertail, B&W ebony riser and limbs. I hate waiting! :campfire:
-
Heck 7-9 weeks is nothing it flies by fast. 6-9 months on the other hand is very painfull, trust me I have another brand bow on order and am hoping for six months :)
-
Congrats David, sounds like she will be a real looker.Wish you would have ordered a 64" cause I like them a little longer legged.Chances are good you will have your eye on something else by mid summer!LOL :wavey:

Nice thread..........
I have two PL's. A PL II model but customized, 64" #45 @28 and an X model with Bocote and cocobolo at 62" #51 @28.
I also have an early dacron string MA III with the old frost finish without the black phenolic in the limbs or riser and only a red band with white outline.
They are shooters for sure and Widow service is next to none.....
I really want a 66" PL. Perhaps in the next year or so...... Always need another bow....
I'll try and get some pics up.........

-
I love this thread.
It just makes me sick! :bigsmyl:
-
Thanks. It is a great little bow. 56" 55@28 and I draw 28.5". It is a great "do it all" bow for me.
-
Hi!
This is the kind of thread, that will make you drool. I would like to shoot each and every one of these beatiful bows! Or maybe not the ones Mr Sturgis presented - could not handle those weights :)
My BW is old school MA III 54@28 64" Autumn oak - and with all the respect to any good bow - old or new I can honestly say, that my BW compares to any bow there is with any aspects you look in a bow.

Those 2 widows are wicked, Very nice.
-
I have had a bunch over the years. The one I wish had back was a 60" SBS [short black stick] 44# @ 29". It was painted black from the factory. I got rid of it and now those are the exact specs I order or look for :banghead: :banghead: I guess I don't get why so many don't care for the red and white in the riser, but to each his own. I still have a PLX I got from Big Ed on here.....nice bow!!

I love the greybark with red and white in the riser,,, Man I'm just stubborn but to me it represents the true "Black widow bow" remember when those were the standard colors that meant "I'm the bow all the others are compared too" ,,,,,,,,now widows are the ones compared to the other bows,, we used to love how fast they shot and how stable the limbs were dont forget all the harvest photos you could find unless it was another bow companys website widows where the majority.
now its funny how its about looks and how pretty they are--> which they are but you don't hear much about how they shoot and you surely don't see as many harvest photos anymore could it be they are too nice to bring out?,,,, not dissing the other bows but me I'll take the black w/red&white over a burl ash or super curly shmirly maple over zircote with custom checkering ANYDAY ,,,, all this was typed with a smile I just had to stand up on my chair, tap the glass and shout out my love for the originals..
SO lets see more Autumn Oaks & Grey Barks, the Brighter the Better C'mon you base price shoppers get in here 8^) with those harvest photos don't let the custom models win show off what those base price models can can do,, hee hee :D ..
-
-
I have 6 of them and "how they shoot " is pretty much a given.
-
Blueridge, I did have a few that shot better than others or lets say I clicked with certain bows,, theres always that bow ont he rack that is the favorite.
I'm seriously thinking about trying a 56" PSA with Asbel grip in Greybark of course maybe rattler backed like my previous widows but plenty of red and white in the riser,,, I'm just not sure if 56" will feel smooth out to 27.5" I usually shoto minimum 60" but need a shorter bow.
sent widow an e-mail with some questions but have yet to hear back.

Tajue17 one of my buddies has a 56" psa 51#@28 draws very smooth at my 281/2 draw.
-
his draws smooth and "No Pinch" thats my biggest concern is does it pinch the 3 fingers,, I shoot 2 under 1 over so maybe not as drastic as 3 under where pinch is more of a concern I guess.
-
I shoot split as well, did not notice any.
Test drive one .

I bought "Dorothy" new in June of 99! She still shoots better than I can!!! MA-II, 64", 53#@30". Had Canebreak rattler skins put on in 2006.
She has put 28 big game critters in the freezer, along with countless fish and small game!!

Coach that is a great looking Widow. I really like the look of the ironwood riser with the olive ash limbs. I'm torn between buying heavier limbs for my ACS longbow, or ordering a new PCH X. Thanks for making my decision a little harder!

Love browsing this thread (over and over) as I await the arrival of my PSAX. I ordered Honduras Rosewood for the riser and Curly Bubinga limbs. Wait period of 12-14 weeks; 4-6 left and as I am sure you have guessed I can't wait!

Thought I’d bring this back up, I’m researching woods for my upcoming PL purchase and ran up on this older thread, man what a great looking bunch of bows.
