Title: what glue for true flight feathers
Post by: canuck4570 on December 13, 2013, 03:11:00 PM
I am making my own arrows (Vanes) for the pas 20 years
today I got my true flight feathers and using the same glue that I use for my plastic vane (carbon express bond) it take 3 to 4 minutes befor the glue sets and with my vanes only 1 minute
this is with applying pressure on the feather older of my blitzenberger fletcher

is this natural or is there a better glue

I've always used Fletch-Tite for both vanes and feathers; no problems.  Might have something to do with the feathers being a porous; not something I'd use a superglue on myself.

The best glue choice is largely based on what kind of arrow material or wood finish you are trying to bond.

4-5 minutes for the glue to dry is normal.  I usually let mine go 10 minutes before moving on to the next feather.

Give bohning fletch tape a shot.  Couldn't be quicker or easier.  And I have yet to loose a feather.   I put a drop of glue on each end of the feather too.

here is the latest news

the alluminium Easton legacy I made took about 3 minutes to hold, this by putting pressure on the fletching gig piece that hold the feather ( I alway did this with my plastic vane which took only a minute to cure )
so I guess like Orion said 4to 5 minutes with feathers

I shot the arrow made about 50 times and its holding firm
satisfied

a bit of panic on my part here

thanks guys for the help......

I use any super glue, Gorilla Super Glue I believe is the same as the high priced vane bonder they sell at the modern bow shops. I've used EVERYTHING else, and keep coming back to cyanacrylate super glues.

Loctite super glue works great.  Puts a hold on in a good 30 secs and it will not come off.  Period

Tape for sure. I finally tried some and it is great. A dab of glue front and rear and the fletch is there for sure!

I use Fletch-Tite Platinum and wait 20 minutes before I remove the clamp and move on to the next feather.

I use loctite superglue on everything but wood. Hold for 30-35 seconds and move no lost feathers in years. It bonds Gateway,Truflight, AMG, natural turkey and fingers very well.

Fletch tape sticks just fine to lacquer.  Why wouldn't it?  Bohning would be idiots to make a tape that didn't stick to their paint!  I have to agree with everything said about fletch tape and fletch-tite.  Fletch-tite takes about 20 minutes to set up.  I used to glue a feather, watch tv until the 1/2 hour commercial, glue another feather, watch tv, etc. till done.  Now I use fletch tape and just keep going till I'm done.  Don't forget the glue on each end as mentioned earlier.  FYI, I've found a dental pic to be the ideal tool for removing the plastic from the tape after you've stuck it to the quill.

I used to use glue for years till I discovered fletch tape... Works very fast and holds very well and glues to anything. As already told,  dont forget drops of glue on both  ends.
