Post by: Scattergun2570 on December 12, 2013, 08:21:00 PM
I need a good warm bottom base layer for under my Briar pants. Any suggestions?

I like me Under Armor Cold Gear, but I do not have to deal with anything near as cold as you do way up there!

Ulfrotte' wool, Minus 33 wool, any good merino wool long johns will serve you well. You will thank us later ! Wool breathes and regulates your body temp better than any other fiber on the planet IMHO.......  :campfire:

I tried First lite marino wool for the first time this year.  I won't wear anything but marino ever again.  I'll be getting rid of all my under armour and poly stuff.

Did the same thing with all my old poly pro too Timmypo1....... Still remember getting all sweated up on the way to the stand in that crap and then freezing ! Just did not work for me like wool base layers do. If I do happen to get hot in my wool as soon as I get settled it dries in a little while and I do not get cold. The breathability of wool is what I like. They will pry my wool out of my cold dead fingers one day but until then it is all I wear.

Looks like the Briar pants are nylon? so you would need  plenty of warmth under 'em. A good winter weight wool is great stuff, as has been said often. Personally, if I'm wearing wool as my "base" layer, I like to wear a very thin silk or breathable synthetic under that. Maximizes warmth and comfort range for me.
A note about the synthetic stuff: poly pro is by no means the only material available, and I gave up on that long ago too. I regularly use a heavyweight polar tech fabric as my warmest base layer ( polar tec "power stretch" ). Those, under a good pair of wool pants, kept me comfortable up here the other day with temps in the single digits, and a breeze added to it.

Try the ecwcs polar tec bibs that the military issued back about ten years ago. They are warm and really light, perfect for me combined with my under armor cold gear and expedition weight outerwear.

Best thing is u can find them for 10-15 dollars on amazon and ****.  Make sure that u pay attention to the size and know before hand they are run kinda short in the legs. I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs. The medium long just hits the top of my 10 inch boots

Don't spend a whole lot of money on fancy stuff... wool is, and has been, THE warmest stuff around. Do a search and find some military surplus wool longhandles. can't go wrong.

Merino wool. I like wool power but there are a lot of good options.

I think you would like Merino wool.  For me it is better then the poly.  I was worried about it itching, but that has not been an issue with either the Smart Wool or Icebreaker line.  It is all I use now and it can be use in a wider range of temperatures.

Wool Power is the only maeino wool I have used - but it's not itchy, it has a nice terry-cloth like 'looped' inside, and it take a while for it to stink!     :bigsmyl:

I wear it any time it's cold out - just love the stuff.  It's not cheap, but oooo it's awesome!
