Hi gang, I put a post on here a few days ago, but I think I deleted it by accident. At any rate, here it is again. I have a 12 year old son that wants to get into traditional archery, I would like to know if anyone has an old bow in the 35 to 40 lb range that they no longer use but is still in good shape that they would sell for cheap or preferably barter for. Contrary to most egos, 35-40 would be at the high end for most beginning adults. I'd start lower with your son and have him learn proper form and work his way up to hunting weight.
I have three bows at present. I'm not ready to sell any of them yet until I get my new one delivered just after New Years.
What I *might* have available are two longbows; one Rudderbows Hickory at 29# and one "do it yourself" from an online purchased bow blank that weighs in at 39# and finished in a Golden Honey oil finish with pistol grip and leather grip wrap. Third is a vintage Herter's recurve at 41# that I'll probably keep.

Check out this site , they have some self bow kits for kids and all they need is sanding and finishing . Could be a neat project .

I'm with DaveV. Kids seem to be bigger today than when I came up, but to develop his form, it's hard to imagine him starting at 35 or 40#. Forty years ago at that age I bought a 45# Bear cub at the local sporting goods store, and it beat me up for years. It's a wonder I ever learned to shoot or stuck with it - a testament to the allure of archery, but a terrible way to start.
Thank you all for the sound advice. My son has been shooting a bow that his Aunt got for him a few years ago(we won't mention that kind of bow here), but he is up to 47# on that, with good form. I know , two different animals, but I don't think he should have a problem with something 35-40#. DaveV, thanks for the offer, any one of those bows would be great.
