Recently got a dozen Ace 175 express heads for Christmas. I am not sure what is the best angle to put on the heads for a razor sharp edge. I have a KME sharpening system that I plan to use. Thanks,
John
I've always used a Rada wheel sharpener or an Accusharp with Ace heads so I'm no help. They oughta get scalpel sharp with a KME.
Just file them a bit and take the burr off with a stone. Don't get wrapped around the axle with angles. It's not rocket science.
I find the KME fast and easy. Just wanted to get an idea what others use for an angle on theirs.
If using the KME knife sharpener I would go for something in the 25* range. I always used the KME broadhead sharpener and I am not sure what that angle is. OR, I used my file and went for that 20-25* by eye.
I love that ACE head, it will make a hole and is tuff and will get plenty sharp
The Ace 175's have the straight edge, right? IMHO, the easiest of all broadheads to sharpen. I go gentle with a file, and then strop on leather. Super scary sharp.
Use the feral as your guide if file sharpening a two blade head. Simple and consistent bevel that way. As far as a sharpening system like a Gatco or Lansky - steeper is stronger - shallower gets the scary scalpel sharp but not durable. Somewhere in between is where most end up with a little of both.
I recently received a dozen 145 gr. Ace Standard Broadheads. On half I started with the Ace sharpening tool, the rest a file and finished all with Lansky medium then fine Ceramic sticks in the 25 degree holes. Easy to get very sharp and quality is first rate plus they are made in this country and reasonably priced.
I have a dozen 145s too. Wicked sharp with the wheelie sharpener and a little stropping
Yes, I forgot to mention the stropping. very important in my opinion. and I also use the feral as my guide like my man Bob said, that seems to get that 20something angle on most heads.
I use the KME on double bevel Zwickey No Mercy. I set the KME at 22-1/2 and use the coarse diamond and a felt marker. If the bevel needs changed it will quickly be apparent and you can use a file to bring it closer to the KME setting. You may want to use an angle closer to 25 degree for starters to see how the ACE steel likes it. You can always drop the angle if you need to. Pretty hard to put the steel back and the 25 will be tougher.

Thank you all for the input. I did sharpen one up with a 23 degree angle and it put a great edge on it. Was very fast to do with the KME.

The straight edge Ace is the 165 gr Express. It is one of my all time favorite heads. I usually try for about a 45 deg angle total or 22 deg per side.
