What bowyers make a mild reflex/deflex bow with thin trapazoid style limbs and a classic D shape when strung ? Seems everywhere I look I find more hybrids. I love my two hybrids but long, no pun intened for a classic D shape bow. I do like a locator style grip as well.
Thanks Bob
Bob, there are several good ones out there but I really like the Northern Mist bows by Steve Turay. Excellent craftsmanship and a real stand up guy. I like his Baraga model. It has mild R/D and the classic "D" shape when strung like you're looking for. Reasonably priced as well. I think you'll find he has an excelent reputation.
I hunted with a Baraga the last 3 years and used it quite hard. I saw Steve this summer and gave it back to him for a refinish job. I just got it back yesterday and he had put a brand new leather grip, strike/rest, and string on the bow as well. It looks brand new. It's my go-to hunting longbow and ready for action again... Dave
I love northern mist baraga and here is a pic

Another vote for the Horne's traditionalist...best d-shape I've ever shot. Can't go wrong with doing business with fine folks like Mark and Sandy either.
Robertson Longbows are mighty hard to beat!

Horne, Robertson, Northern Mist, Liberty, Border, Black Swan ...
Another vote for Northern Mist Baraga!!!
Check out the Dwyer Long bows. I have 2 64" trap limbs and a locator grip.
You could have your cake and eat it, too - a deflex-reflex (or is it reflex-deflex) longbow that LOOKS like a D shape longbow when strung. Meets all the regs for the different competitons, if that matters. Go with a 21St Century longbow or a Fox triple Crown. Very fast, easy to shoot and STABLE so if you are an accurate shooter, you tend to hit what you aim at, most of the time.
There are a lot of great bows out there - I kinda like shooting bows without much hand shock (some people call it a thump) which most conventional D-shaped longbows seem to have for me. So I like my 21St Century.
Take a look at Yellowstone Bows too.
One more is Jay St. Charles Pacific Yew longbows. He offers several varieties of longbows from selfbows, laminated with no fiberglass to a laminated version with glass D bow.
I have a couple of his bows and can attest to their quality. His website is:

Over on this side of the pond Border and KG archery and several others. They are very popular over here in the UK due to the D shape requirement when braced as a bow style classification at field competitions.

Great Northern Bos
Hey bob, You know that if you want the "D' shape you need to go old school :readit: Seriously Bob try a Howard Hill you wont be sorry.
Another one for the Baraga.Just got my new one last Friday
Stoneknife,I have tried the Howard Hill and just can't seem to shoot them well but love the shape and how quiet yours is.
Thanks for the input eveybody. Now I have a couple options I didn't know about.
Does Northern Mist have a web site ?
Gotta put in a plug for Northern Mist. I LOVE my Baraga.
Steve's website is http://www.exploringthenorth.com/bowman/steve.html
I have to admit. he's not big on pictures on his website. Contact him and he'll tell you everything there is to know about his bows. You can find pics here and there. If you're really hard up, some of us Baraga fans can post pics as well. Call Steve. You'll be glad you did. Even if you don't order a bow.

Sounds Like, you are lookin for a Liberty Longbow.Either the english or the Mild D/R contender. You wont find better workmanship or Customer service anywhere.
Somebody needs to set me straight. I always thought a "D" shaped bow was in reference to the limb shape (flat back, round belly)not what it looked like when it was strung. Have I been wrong all these years? Enlighten me!
T.A.C.,Originally, or at least for many years, "D" refered to the bows cross sectional shape like an elb (flat back with a round belly). Calling a bow a "D" bow because of the strung profile is a more recent use of the term. Also, Some folks don't consider a longbow to be a longbow unless it has the "D" cross section, and all others are American flatbows. So I guess it really depends on who you're talking too.lol
Mahaska!
Actually,I believe the opposit is true,to what BambooBender said.
A D cross section bow,can be changed to have a different profile. Therefore, its not a Dbow anymore. But,a true D profile bow,can have any shape limb cross section, and still be a Dbow.
While you are looking see if you can get ahold of a Wallace Mountain Bow. That's a Dave Wallace bow.
Liberty English Great shooting bows that Allen Boice makes. He fills his orders usually within 2 months too. Check them out at libertylongbows.com.
Liberty contender,Great Northern critter Gitter,Dwyer original longbow,J.D Berry. All D shaped, mild R and D with varying degrees of trapezoid cross section. All good shooters for me.One of my favorites in this design is a Frederick Longbow as well. Its No longer made though.
Thanks guys ! Now I want them all !

i own a dwyer original long bow and really enjoy it...very classic "D" profile. i ahve also shot a 7-Lakes longbow and found it to be very good, also. the dwyer is a narrow limb/deep core longbow.

I had a 7 lakes that I sold that's it in my Avatar. That is why I'm going through withdrawl now. If I can buy it back I will . If not 7 lakes doesn't produce finished bows and that's the only reason I'm looking around. I miss my 7 lakes :banghead: :banghead:
I really like the Northen Mist and the Dwyer so far.
I'm a little partial to my Dwyer Originals. Although I've considered Mahaska, Saxon amd Northern Mist. All have "classic" looks, made from reputable bowyers and would most likely be a matter of personal preference. I believe Dwyer will let you test his bows before you buy. Perhaps the others have the same policy.
Bob
Try to shoot a Wes Wallace Royal if you can find one; great bow.
I'm shooting an Abbot longbow I got off the classifieds. it has a bacote handle with osage limbs. 66" long and 59@28. proly the best D shaped I've ever shot. I had a Dwyer Classic that was 68" and 62" long that was a sweety. Cut my traditional teeth on whitetails with that one. That was one fine bow. I am about to contact Steve Abbot on building one of his bows for me although I really dont need another one. this one shoots too good to let go. This will give you an idea of the profile of the bow.

They are absolutly great bows we have two in our family & hope to add a very short chief.
Take a look at Kim Sha Mattawoman II.
IMHO, the Mattawoman II is one of the best "D" bows around.
Mike
As you've seen, plenty of great choices in D bows. The only one I have extensive experience with is the Dwyer original, and I can sure vouch that it is an excellent bow. There was one for sale on the classifieds the last time I looked.
What about Bighorn Bow company. I have an old Bighorn Ramhunter (Asbel era) and love it. But the company still around.
