Hey Gang,
***** Sign up for the traveling Jackal now closed *****
Due to requests, South agreed to build a "traveling Jackal". The first stop for the Jackal will be in SC, for a "hog heaven" hunt. From there it will continue on. We want the Jackal to make an appearance at Kalamazoo, so scheduling this may take some planning. Hopefully we'll have at least two participants that will be attending Kalamazoo, one to drop it off on the 24th and one to pick it up on the 26th. If not, we'll make other arrangements.
If interested in test driving the Jackal, please post your name and State. If you're interested and able to drop off or pick up the Jackal on the desired dates of Kalamazoo, please notate.
Anyone signing up needs to be in the cont. US and a "TG contributor/sponsor" or have at least 500 posts. At this point in time, we will take the first 10 that sign up.
If you decide to participate, you will have to pay for USPS priority shipping to the next recipient and may only test drive the bow for one week. So, if you receive it on a Monday, please be sure to ship it by the following Monday.
Sorry but at this point in time we only have one Jackal. It's right hand and will be about 50# @ 28".
All insights in regards to the Jackal may be posted here...
Thank you!

Ryan I would love to have it the week of the JLMBH bunny hunt in February. The hunt, which will likely see between 75-100 hunters, is scheduled for Feb 14th and 15th of 2014.
Thanks, David
Put me down as well Ryan !!
I'd love to try it out as well. I'm in Arkansas

Ryan, I'm very interested and can take it to Kzoo the minute the doors open on Friday. I enjoyed speaking with South at last year's show, and am very excited to try out the Jackal.
That'll work out great Adrew! Okay Gang, that's 7 guys so far. 3 more and I'll have close the list.
Thank you!
I wouldn't mind trying it. I'm in Montana.
Put me down please and I am in Kalamazoo.
I'm in Oregon...?
David makes number 10 and we got two guys attending Kalamazoo!
Thanks Gang!
Okay guys, here's what it'll look like if all goes as planned.
The Jackal named "Boone" will start off at the hog hunt in SC.
After the hunt, it'll be shipped off to Gery (katman), he will keep it for a week, then get it shipped off to Aaron (DarkTimber).
Then to,
Andrew (Pokerdaddy)
Andrew should have it in time to shoot it for a week. He'll drop off "Boone" to South Cox on the opening day of Kalamazoo. That way others will be able to give it a go. South will try his best to have a couple Jackals with him too.
On the last day of Kalamazoo, Todd (xtrema312) can you pick up "Boone" from South Cox?
From there it will head to David (Huntrdfk). David you should receive it in time to practice before the bunny hunt.
Then off to Nathan Killen, Bisch, Nathan (Homebru), Mike (Prarie Drifter), and the last stop will be with David (Snag). David, you will be sending it back home to South.
Please PM the Gang member who has the bow before you with your personal shipping address.
There are a couple key dates to keep in mind.
The first is trying to get the bow to Andrew (Pokerdaddy) a week before Kalamazoo, Jan 24th.
The next important date would be to get it to David (Huntrdfk) a week before the JLMBH bunny hunt that starts on Feb. 14th.
I've tried to schedule it so that everyone would have a week with it including shipping times but it's almost the holidays and shipping will be crazy!!!
Let's try our best to keep in contact by posting questions, concerns, feedback and updates here.
Thank again!
Ryan K. Sanpei
Sounds good. Just let me know what time Sunday to pick it up.
That'll be great! Thanks Todd! Are you going down before Sunday? If you are, please stop by the Stalker booth to schedule a pick up time with South. If not I'll keep you posted.
Here's a sneak peak of "Boone"...

Blinked and missed the sign up, damm.
Sweet looking bow.
Ryan, do we need to PM our address to the person who will have it prior or to you ? I'm going to kill 2 birds with 1 stone in this deal ! I got a good friend that's wanting to pull the plug on a stalker, he's a longbow guy and I think he will dig this new riser !
Tristan, you better let me shoot that thing when you get it!
Nathan,
Yes please PM your address to the person prior to you.
Thank you!
So, I am looking at the middle of Feb. to receive Boone? Give or take some days for shipping? Is it being sent Priority between guys? Looking forward to shooting Boone. I have a tag for a late blacktail hunt but it is over the end of Feb. Might have to introduce him to a blacktail.
HA!!!
Man... It's good to be on that hog hunt this week...
I can't wait to get my hands on this one.
James
Sent my address to Nathan Killen by PM!
Bisch
Prairie Drifter "you have mail"...I mean a PM.
Nathan when you get it, put your static limbs on it. You won't be dissapointed! David if you beg enough I'll send my statics to you to try with the riser ;)
Sorry Snag, because you live right above South, you're last on the list. If things go as planned, the bow will be at the bunny hunt mid Feb. I tried to order the list based on location and upcoming events.
Yes please ship USPS priority mail.
James, please be sure to keep us posted!
No problem. I'll try calling in a cougar or a coyote. It'll "go afield" with me on some adventure.
Not sure who I am supposed to send my address too since it's going to the hog hunt prior to coming to me?
Tristan,
For now, can you pm your addy to James (Nattybumppo). South said that the bow will be shipped to him.
James, if you're not the one shipping it out after the hunt, could you please let me know who is.
Thank you!
Ryan K.Sanpei
Ok great, thanks!

By the time I receive Boone it ought to have some major Mojo! Looking forward to watching it's trip and reading it's stories.
I am just besides myself here. What a great thing you and South have undertaken......I am humbled to be able to be part of it. I can tell you it will be seen, handled and shot by a bunch of people at Shawn's Bunny hunt.
Thanks to both of you for doing this.
David
Thank you for being a part of this David! Both South and I are looking forward to the Journey of Boone. Any insight to the development of this new riser design would be greatly appreciated!!!
Sang, I would love to see the arrows that you'll be shooting out of this bow!
Aloha!
Ryan K. Sanpei
Rats! Sorry I missed out on this one. I would have gladly done the drop off or pick up at k-zoo. Congrats to those that get to participate. I look forward to following this thread for the next few months.
Ryan, I'll post the arrows I will be building for this bow for you. I have an idea looking at the wood combos. Love to introduce one to a big kitty!
Pheonixarcher,
Please feel free to run some shots through Boone at Kalamazoo. It should be there the entire weekend and if you have input that you'd like to share, please post here so we can keep track of all the suggestions.
Thank you!
Snag, can't wait to see those arrows!!!

If I'm not mistaken, 1/8" past.
Yes, 1/8" past center.

OK guys. here's my .02...
First off, I'm a lefty. I also got to shoot the Faith bow of two years ago that South made. I knew his quality was with the best. So while at Wild Things I took the Stalker Jackal out for a RH session from this southpaw.
I had one wooden arrow with a judo that I was carrying out into the swamps and pines. My squirrel and stumping arrow. I grabbed it and hoped it would do well in the Jackal. It did. I did not use a glove or tab, just bare fingers. I shot it many many times and accuracy for me even RH was not too shabby. I tried numerous turn and shoot shots at various unsuspecting sticks and leaves. Its quick pointability made getting on target simply a breeze.
The fit is perfect as limbs matched up to the riser as good as it could get. The finish was one I really liked. The matte finish would be perfect for hunting and obviously thick enough to act as a shield of armor against the dings and scrapes associated with hunting.
Drawing it is smooth from start to finish. The grip, a different type compared to South's other lines, was matched to my hand like he made it for me specifically. I was truly amazed at how well I shot it being left eye dominant and a die hard lefty.
This bow will be right up there with his other bows. Well made and hand crafted pieces of functioning deadly art.
Congratulations South on another fine bow.
Wow Bud, thanks for the kudos! I'm feeling guilty now that I didn't put a LH riser together to go along with the package. Hmmmm.... that's got me thinking...what about a LH'er pass around??
Man, I am really liking the profile of this riser. I cannot wait to shoot this bow. I can see it possibly costing me some $$$ in the long run!
Bisch
I too shot the Jackal in SC. My impression, short and sweet:
1) nice eye candy
2) great grip - fit my hand perfectly
3) well balanced
4) light for a TD
5) shot right where I was looking
6) quick shooter without any unpleasant characteristics
7) if I was looking for a TD longbow, I would be looking at a Jackal.
Good to hear the great reviews. Don't forget the static recurve limbs will go on this riser as well! I know you guys didn't have them, but they shoot nice!!
Big Sexy states that it is light for a TD.
Could someone please measure the mass weight and let us know what it is?
Looking forward to sending some woodies through it.
QuoteOriginally posted by Hermon:

Looking back at that now, I realize that is fairly subjective. I think we will find that depending on the woods/materials used, the actual mass may be greater or less from one Jackal to another, as it would be with one XYZ bow vs. another XYZ bow. As a subjective statement, I guess I should have said it was lighter than I expected it to be for a TD (still rather subjective). But I guess it wouldn't be a bad thing to know the numbers if available.

I would go for a LH'er
FYI, I weighed the two handles that just came back from Steadman. One is 14 1/2 ounces, the other 15 ounces. They are both made from lighter materials (birch actionwood on one and walnut and actionwood on the other). These should be on the lighter end of the handles. I would guess Boone weighed in a couple of ounces heavier with the coco/bocote combo.
PM sent South...

How does that compare to a similar Coyote riser?
My two cents as well! Had the opportunity to handle, droll over and shoot Boone at the Wild Things hunt. Beautiful bow! Like Bud states, the grip felt like it was made for my hand specifically!
Very smooth and quiet. Braced up at 7 3/8" and set nock for where I typically set my bows and took it out to shot at the 3-d's that Andrew has set up for practice.
Arrows hit right where I was looking with a EFOC set up! Really slung a arrow with plenty of penetration into the new 3-d targets! South has a winner here!
If I had only know earlier that the bow's name was Boone - that is my mother's maiden name!
Hermon, I threw a Coyote riser on the scale with the same wood configuration, it was 1 pound and 1/2 ounce.
Thanks so much.
Katman had to leave town and passed Boone to me. I got to shoot it today a bit and WOW this is a fast bow.
I have a couple TradGangers coming to hog hunt the 26th through the 28th and was hoping it wouldn't mess up the rotation if I sent it out on the 30th.
If this doesn't work please let me know and I will ship it before xmas :archer2:
NOMAD88, that should be fine. Please try your best to get it out by the 30th though. Then the next two guys will have a little over a week each before Kalamazoo.
Gang, please post all info about here about Boone here.
Thank you!

Excellent!
I will get it out first thing in the morning on the 30th
Thank you
wow no news on the bow in over a month?
Well I can report that it made it to the Kalamazoo Expo okay and I picked it up yesterday afternoon. I did manage to get it together and set up yesterday. Shot a few arrows and did some tuning until my fingers gave in to the cold.
I plan to tinker a bit over the next few days and hope to get a weather break this week for some outside shooting. Single digits for highs next couple days then some warmer but windy days. Could be tolerable by the weekend. Maybe a trip Friday to an indoor range for some longer shots. For now it will be 10 yd. indoors in the barn for short sessions.
First impression are that it is a sharp looking bow and I love the grip!
Just a few short weeks till it will be in my hands!
Can't wait!
Bisch
Yeah, to be honest, I was pretty surprised with the lack of feedback...
I'm just glad that it made it to K-Zoo...
Ryan, I'd say with all the really cold temps we've been having most folks probably never really got to put it thru the paces like they normally would have ! Maybe that's why !?
Thanks for the insight Nathan!
Nathan's right, or at least that was the case for me. I received the bow in the middle of an ice storm and and was only able to get out and shoot it one time for about 30 min in the sleet and freezing rain. I was very impressed with the bow for the short amount of time I had it. I shot some Carbon Express Heritage 150s with 200 gr up front and they shot great and hit right where I looked from the first shot. The fit and finish on the bow were superb (really loved the textured type finish). I also loved the grip, which was the main reason I wanted to test the bow. Unfortunately the bow was running a little behind schedule and I had to overnight it to Andrew before the weather broke to give him time with it before K-Zoo. Thanks for putting this together Ryan & South!
I shot that Jackal at kalamazoo and was really impressed. I think he nailed it with the grip and it was exceptionally quiet.
I should get it in a couple more weeks and am chomping at the bit to feel that riser. If I get it as scheduled it will be right at my birthday, and I will get to go after a pig with it if I can get some arrows working right.
Bisch
geez, I wish some of the traveling bows like this one and Hope and Faith etc. were longer length bows, I'd love to try a Stalker, but with my monkey armed draw length 31" none of them work for me, yeah I know boo hoo! lol
X2
Hey Ryan,
Any chance of sending the bow around the world? I'm so jealous of you guys in the states....
I would love to try any of these bows that go around!
Ow Well....
Pete
For all you guys who didn't get in on this, South does offer a test drive program. If this is a bow your interested in, just give him a call. It's a minimal cost and you can try it for yourself. At least folks in the US. That being said South is out of area for awhile so if you call. But he'll hook you up when he gets back!!
Ryan, I sat and had a visit with South this past weekend at the Expo in Kzoo. I think South did a fine job on the Jackal and from what he told me, it was a big hit at the show.
You should go on the road with South and hit our winter show, it was a beautiful winters day at the Expo this year.
Burrrrr....
CTT
Don't know if y'all got to see my post on it but it is like everyone is saying, there is something about the grip on this bow that just works perfectly.
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=134186;p=2#000016
Steadman, BTW, I got that string you sent to me. I think I am going to have to reserve that skinny sucker to get my nocks to fit good. Waiting on the bow and I will give it a go!
Thanks,
Bisch
Good to hear Bisch! Ha that's 14super strands too. I ran out of my thicker serving. Chuck I'd really like to get to some shows again. Hope all is well with you and your wool insoles are awesome!
Thanks Ryan! Yes, South does offer a "test drive" but as Steadman mentioned, he's getting ready to leave on a trip.
Chuck, I'm thinking the Expo should be in Hawaii! :shaka:
Well, if they move it Ryan, I will come. Might even stay. How many rooms you got? :shaka:
We are getting pounded again this weekend. I have had enough winter already
Got the bow packed up and read to ship out today if i can get out of of work for a bit to get to the PO. I will get some comments up as soon as I can.
Todd, thank you for the updated status on the Jackal.
We've got than enough room Chuck!
Okay finally got a little time to share some thoughts on the new riser.
Like I said before, I really love the grip. It is as good a grip for my hand as I have ever tried. I have a couple I like quite a bit on different bows, but none I like any better. It sets very solid in my and with no unwanted contact area. it is very repeatable and comfortable. I like the way my thumb sets very relaxed in the grip shape in the left side with my index finger just making contact with the thumb. Index finger rides nice on the flat of the back of the riser. The only thing I would change on the grip for me would be a minor change to right side of the riser's back where my bottom fingers land. I tend to hit right on the edge line near the ends of my lower fingers. That feels a little odd when carrying with a tighter grip. If it was a little more full on the right side near the back or had a little more radius on that edge, it would just feel a bit better for my fingers to grip. A smaller hand would likely have the fingers on the back of the riser and a large hand would likely have the finger joint hit the edge and wrap nicely. It is just a small personal hand fit thing. No negatives to me on the shot, but someone with my hand size, who likes to grip more firm on the shot, may not like this edge.
I like the shelf a lot. Just the right height for me. Some may like an arrow right on their hand, but I like to keep the feather base from running on my hand if I have a low nock or arrow slide down. I really like the way the shelf is narrow at the belly and wider at the back. This kind of shelf cut gives me a lot of clearance in the area where my arrows tend to rub the shelf when I shoot split. At the same time the wider shelf at the back of the riser gives plenty of arrow support to keep the arrow on very well when tipping the bow to the left or moving it around fast.
Site window was good, and I like that the bow has a narrow limb profile with a narrow riser at the top limb. This gives me better vision when shooting spit with a little cant. I used to shoot split with more cant, but now shoot a lot more 3under and fairly vertical. when I do shoot split now, a lot of shorter riser bows bug me because they have wide limb butts and short site windows. I end up with the obstructed view now with the shorter risers. This one works fairly well for me split and 3 under.
The riser is set forward in comparison to some bow. I really like that and how stable the bow feels. It really points well. The bow really shot well for me.
I do have just a minor esthetic item. I kind of thought the riser shape was a bit plan on the low part of the grip and riser area. More on the bottom of the grip transition area particularly on the left side. It just looks a bit plan in shape. Maybe a bit of a change in the shape just to give it a bit more detail and contour as the grip transitions to the riser particularly on the lefts side heading back to the back of the riser and below the grip.
I wasn't as thrilled with the limbs as I was the riser. The bow shot well for me for accuracy and pointed real well. Performance was decent for the limb type. Draw was decent, but felt just a hair heavier than my other bows of the same weight range. Felt more like my 53 then 51# bow. The bow felt nice in the hand on the shot. I played a bit with some strings, silencers and other tuning, but never got it as quite as I would like. I really didn't have a lot of experimenting time due to the sub zero temps and winds we had part of the week I had the bow. Hard to say what I may have been able to do with it with one my my SBD strings if I had time to try out some different silencer setups. Part of the sound I heard particularly shooting 3 under made me wonder if some limb pad material could be worth trying out. Had the bow been whisper quite for me, It would likely be lost in the mail right about now. :D
Last year I shot all three limb designs at the expo. I liked the working recurve limbs the best. I would really like to shoot those limbs on this riser, but I am not sure that is an option for this riser.
I would love a bow with this riser, recurve limbs and 58" long that will draw to 29" or a little more. That is exactly the bow I am looking for right now.
Todd,
Thank you for your detailed insight!
Yes, you are able to shoot the static limbs off of this riser as it's basically built off the same platform as the Coyote.
Aloha!
Ryan
The Jackal will be on it's way to New York tomorrow to participate in Shawn's Bunny Hunt, should be a great weekend, she will get shot a ot this weekend!!
David
Looks like the postman tried to bring it to me yesterday, but I was in Fort Worth at a 3D shoot. I'll pick it up first thing Monday morning and be slinging arrows within an hour of getting her!
Bisch
I got a chance to handle the Jackel last weekend at JLMBH....two words....VERY SWEET!!!!
Pix don't do the bow justice at all....really like the riser shape!!
All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!
I picked the bow up at the PO a little while ago. Came home and opened the box up. Pictures of the bow do not do it justice! It is beautiful, as are all of South's creations. Boone is a bit heavy for me so I did not even try the limbs that came with it. I immediately got the limbs off my Custom Tracker (now called Coyote, I think) and put them on the jackal riser. It looks real good, even with mismatched limbs!
(http://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss239/archeryrules/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/B5B54CC3-2BA0-4CDB-B420-DA8EE96CECE5_zps32cz3zso.jpg) (http://s579.photobucket.com/user/archeryrules/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/B5B54CC3-2BA0-4CDB-B420-DA8EE96CECE5_zps32cz3zso.jpg.html)
I then went and got a few arrows and straight out to te target. With ZERO tuning this is what I was getting within the first 5 minutes of shooting this bow!

To say I am impressed would be an understatement. There would be a few minor things I would change in the grip if I was to have South make one for me, but overall it gets an A+ from me!
Bisch
Hey Bisch,
Did it make it in time for any of your hunts???
I'm headed to the lease on Thursday for a couple days and gonna try to stab a pig with it. I have no doubt after just one day with it that I can kill a critter with it, just got to get the pigs to cooperate!
I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow to throw a few arrows thru the paper and see if there are any changes that need to be made. It is real close as it is, so I don't think I am going to be making much for adjustments!
Bisch
That was some awesome shooting, Bisch! Good luck with the pigs!
As I suspected, very little change was needed. This was the first shot thru the paper!

I'm good to go!
Bisch
Awesome! Go get um Bisch!!!
Well, no pigs were harmed by me!
As I stated in my above post, the new riser gets an A+ from me!
The bow will be on its way to Homebru in CO as soon as I can get to the PO this morning!
Bisch
Thank you for all your insight Bisch!
Have a great year in the field!
Hmmmmm.......there's a box in the house.

Keep us posted!!!
Soooooooo......it's my turn. First of all, I'm not a professional reviewer. I just like to shoot bows and I'm a sucker for pretty wood.
There are a lot of excellent bowyers out there. I believe that South is among them. I've never seen in person, nor shot a Stalker bow prior to this.
South put together a very beautiful bow. The choice of woods is stunning. His craftsmanship is excellent. The transition from limbs to riser was simply beautiful. If the limb bolts were not visible, it would look like a one piece bow if you didn't know it.
Again, I'm not a professional reviewer. The bow drew very smoothly. I didn't notice any stacking in the bow at my draw length. The cast was very good.
As I said, I'd never seen a Stalker bow in person before. I know that South has a strong following out there. I now know why.
For those of you that may be looking for a new bow, I would certainly consider Stalker Stickbows in the decision.
I would like to publicly thank South and Ryan for putting this together and making this bow available to the few of us that have gotten a chance to test drive his work.
The bow is now on it's way to Montana for a visit with Prairie Drifter.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your review Homebru! We really appreciate it!
Just got a package !!!
Let us know how it goes!!! ;)
Lots of great reviews. Obviously a bow I may need to consider. Is the list still going. If so I would like to get in line.
Sorry tracker, this bow needs to head back to South soon. Once he gets to work on a few more Jackal risers, he may be able to put together a "test drive" model.
Now that I've played w/ this bow a bit, here are my impressions.
Fit and finish; bow is well made and limbs fit the riser very well. I was not real crazy about the textured finish. I prefer a smooth semi gloss finish. Tip overlays are very impressive.
I strung it up,grabbed a few arrows and headed out.
Bow shot very well, hitting were I was looking.
I like a med/high wrist on my bows, This bow's grip was lower than I like, but still handled well for me. Very smooth draw.
Overall, I was impressed with the Jackal.
Now I'm considering South's 54" static tip.......
Went out to get the mail and there on the porch was an odd sized package....? Had forgotten about this with all that's been going on lately. Once I saw South's name on the address label I was walking a little quicker to get in the house and open it up.
My thoughts on the finish is that it is a good finish for hunting. It may not be what some like. But it is definitely a non-reflective surface. The fit and finish is top notch. I like the design of the riser and the limbs for a takedown.
I had to verify the brace height range with South. Then I strung it, grabbed some 70# wood arrows and went out back to give it a test drive.
My first thoughts were that it had a nice weight in the hand...not too light, not too heavy, but just right. I like the size of grip for my hand. You can tell by the design of the narrow trapped limbs that this bow stores lots of energy.
I've been shooting a longbow for the past 4 months. So it took a little bit to get back in the groove of shooting a recurve type grip. After 6 arrows it all came back. This bow is a delight to shoot. It is very easy to hold on point throughout the shot. It really throws an arrow for a 51# bow without the shock or jolt upon release of the string.
I will be taking it up in the foothills to try and call in a cougar this weekend.
Funny, I just asked about this post today, let us know how the cat hunt goes!!
Calling in cougars? You sure that bow's not a Deathwish?
